The role of foreign language teachers, as well as the possible strategies that they
can use to motivate their students, have always been of great concern to researchers
interested in Foreign Language Teaching (FLT). However, it was proved by Dörnyei and
Csizér (1998) that depending on the culture, some strategies are more effective than
others. The aim of this study will be to answer three questions regarding Spanish culture;
(1) What are the most useful motivational strategies according to foreign language
teachers in Spain to motivate students? (2) Are those strategies actually used by Spanish
teachers? (3) According to Spanish students' perception, do these strategies actually
motivate them? Participants were 25 Secondary Education English teachers in Navarra
and the Basque Country and, 31 first grade students of a school in Pamplona. The results
showed that (1) the strategies used by Spanish foreign language teachers are different
from the ones used in other countries, (2) teachers actually use motivational strategies
although there is a significant difference between the importance they give to them and
the frequency with which they later admit to putting them into practice, and finally, (3)
students’ and teachers’ perceptions are similar regarding which strategies are more
motivational. However, the importance that students give to the motivational techniques
decreases considerably compared to the importance given by the instructors. [--]
