Juan Echeverría, cura carlista (Los Arcos, Navarra, 1794-Lyon, 1844)

Abstract

Pretende poner de manifiesto la singular personalidad de este sacerdote rural que, llevado de su fervor político por la causa tradicionalista de Carlos V, aspirante al trono español tras la muerte de su hermano Fernando VII, llegó a presidir la Junta Gubernativa de Navarra y, más tarde, la Diputación del Reino. Fue tal su compromiso que, tras el convenio de Vergara en 1839, no quiso saber nada de semejante pacto y prefirió exilarse voluntariamente a claudicar de sus principios. Se dan a conocer las fechas de su sepelio y testamento.

The aim of these pages is to highlight the peculiar personality of this rural priest whose passion for politics, in particular Carlos V’s traditionalist cause and aspiration to become king after his brother Fernando VII died, eventually led him to succeed in presiding over the Junta Gubernativa de Navarra, and later, over the Diputación del Reino. His commitment was so great that after the Vergara agreement of 1839, he did not want to know anything about this pact and preferred to exile himself rather than walk away from his principles. The dates of his burial and will be let known.
