Luces y sombras de la tercera revolución verde. Demandas sociales, opciones agrícolas y desacuerdos narrativos

Abstract

Este trabajo explora cómo se construye y determina la identidad del proceso que agrupa y delimita a la primera, la segunda y la tercera revolución verde. Se muestra la validez situada, precaria y contingente de los principales relatos sociales aquí activados y confrontados. Igualmente, se examina la discusión sobre la pertinencia de establecer una distinción precisa y contundente entre los procesos de la selección, el cruzamiento y la manipulación genética de los organismos vegetales y animales. Se investiga, principalmente, la capacidad colectiva para determinar si los nuevos alimentos transgénicos son y simbolizan, o bien una evolución viable, lógica y positiva, o bien una involución nociva, opcional e irresponsable. Quedaría explicitada, en definitiva, la fuerte tensión práctica y discursiva existente entre el relato social establecido de la evolución, el progreso y la continuidad frente al relato social discrepante de la involución, la ambivalencia y la discontinuidad.

This paper try to shed some light on the development of the identity of process that brings together and define The First, Second and Third Green Revolutions. It focus on the local, contextual and unstable validity of the main social narratives involved in this controversy. In addition, it is analyzed the discussion about the desirability of establishing an accurate and firm distinction between selection processes, crossing and genetic manipulation of plants and animals. This article explores, mainly, the collective ability to determine whether new transgenic foods stand as a sustainable, logical and an appropriate evolution or whether a harmful, optional and irresponsible involution. Finally and consequently, this paper shows the strong practical and discursive tension existing between the dominant social narrative of the evolution, progress and continuity and the divergent social narrative of the involution, ambivalence and discontinuity.
