Las brujas de Ochagavía y sus documentos (1539-1540)

Abstract

Este artículo trata de estudiar, a través de la correspondencia mantenida entre el Tribunal de la Inquisición de Calahorra y el Consejo de la Inquisición, el foco de brujería que surge en Ochagavía y en otras poblaciones del valle de Salazar a principios de 1539. Nuestro objetivo, además de reconstruir los procesos de fe incoados a las brujas de Ochagavía, es el de desentrañar el funcionamiento del Santo Oficio en Navarra poniendo en relación las actuaciones del Tribunal de la Inquisición de Calahorra no sólo con las de los tribunales judiciales navarros, sino también con las directrices y pautas marcadas por la Suprema y por otros Consejos de la monarquía hispana.

Through the correspondence between the Court of the Inquisition in Calahorra and the Council of the Inquisition, this article aims to study the focal point of witchcraft which came to a head in Ochagavía and other localities in the Valley of Salazar at the beginning of 1539. In addition to reconstructing the trials of faith initiated against the witches of Ochagavía, our objective is to reveal how the Holy Office worked in Navarre by relating the proceedings of the Court of the Inquisition in Calahorra not only with those of Navarre’s courts of law, but also with the directives and guidelines set by the Supreme Court and other Bodies of the Spanish monarchy.
