Publication Open Access Proceso de diseño de un servofreno electromagnético con función ABS: gestión del conocimiento de la empresa(AEIPRO, 2008) Villanueva Roldán, Pedro; Martínez Landa, Paulino; Pérez, A.; Ingeniería; IngeniaritzaEl presente trabajo presenta la metodología seguida para desarrollar un nuevo servofreno electromagnético, utilizado conjuntamente con la bomba de freno para reducir el esfuerzo a realizar por el conductor en la acción de frenado. Hasta el presente, estos mecanismos tiene ayuda de vacío, presión neumática o presión hidráulica. Se plantea la posibilidad de generar un nuevo diseño de servofreno, el cual utilice la energía propia de la batería del automóvil; aportando la presión y el volumen demandado, utilizando principios electromagnéticos. El equipo de desarrollo, aplica los conocimientos atesorados por la empresa en algunos modelos de servofrenos y aprovecha la gestión del conocimiento integrada en la gestión general de la empresa El trabajo da lugar a un producto novedoso que en el sistema de frenos se acopla a cada rueda de forma independiente, aportando la presión y el volumen necesario en función de los requerimientos del entorno vehículo-carretera. A pesar de ello, dicho proceso se ha aplicado con éxito en múltiples sectores a lo largo del siglo XX. El ajuste óptimo de las variables de configuración es una tarea complicada ya que las desviaciones producen un incremento en las tensiones y deformaciones residuales en la pieza resultante. En el presente trabajo, un análisis de sensibilidad fue realizado para determinar la influencia de cada uno de los parámetros de configuración del proceso y posteriormente, poder establecer un orden de importancia. Un caso práctico de la soldadura de dos placas de acero fue realizado para realizar una lectura de datos y aplicar el análisis de sensibilidad.Publication Open Access Modeling of MAG welding process using data mining techniques(AEIPRO, 2011) Villanueva Roldán, Pedro; Ibarra Murillo, Martín; Lostado Lorza, Rubén; Sanz García, Andrés; Ingeniería; IngeniaritzaLa fabricación de componentes mecánicos mediante soldadura eléctrica es un proceso que se lleva aplicando con éxito en diferentes sectores desde comienzos del siglo XX (Automoción, Construcción, Aeronáutica…). Este proceso de fabricación presenta siempre el inconveniente de inducir sobre el componente fabricado elevadísimas tensiones y deformaciones residuales, obligando a un mecanizado posterior hasta poder ajustar a las tolerancias de diseño. El mecanizado posterior supone siempre un sobrecoste en el precio total de fabricación del componente soldado, aumentando este según el grado de mecanizado requerido. En este trabajo se expone la experiencia adquirida en la modelización del proceso soldadura MAG mediante técnicas de Minería de Datos. El objetivo principal es encontrar modelos predictivos de deformaciones angulares y de los espesores de los cordones de las soldaduras en función de los parámetros de configuración de la máquina de soldeo (intensidad, velocidad, ángulos, etc.), así como identificar los factores mas influyentes en la generación de las tensiones y deformaciones residuales.Publication Open Access Optimización de un freno de disco mediante la combinación del método de los elementos finitos y algoritmos genéticos(AEIPRO, 2012) Zurrón-Barragán, Carlos; Olarte-Valentín, Rubén; Ramírez-Aragón, María Cristina; Villanueva Roldán, Pedro; Lostado Lorza, Rubén; Ingeniería; IngeniaritzaUn freno de disco es un sistema de frenado que actúa sobre las ruedas motrices de los vehículos. Este dispositivo transforma toda o parte de la energía cinética del vehículo debida al movimiento en calor a fin de detenerlo o disminuir su velocidad. Cualquier freno de disco posee una parte móvil (el disco) y una rueda que gira, así como unas pastillas de fricción o de freno. Estas pastillas son los elementos que ejercen la presión y la adherencia sobre los propios discos. Hoy en día, el diseño de este tipo de dispositivos está basado tanto en estudios teóricos como en el Método de los Elementos Finitos (MEF). Uno de los principales inconvenientes de éste método es el ajuste de las condiciones de contorno del modelo y de los parámetros de material. En este trabajo, se muestra el ajuste y la validación experimental de un modelo de elementos finitos de un freno de disco completo. En este artículo se describe una alternativa a la bicicleta eléctrica. Se muestra el proceso de diseño de un dispositivo aplicable a una bicicleta, formado únicamente por elementos mecánicos siguiendo una moda retro o steampunk. Tiene por objetivo divertir al usuario, produciendo un estímulo directamente relacionado con la velocidad y el esfuerzo físico. Tanto el almacenamiento de energía, como la descarga de la misma, se produce a voluntad del usuario. Por un lado, una vez alcanzada una velocidad adecuada al gusto del usuario o cuando él así lo desee, da marcha atrás con los pedales cargando así el dispositivo. Por otro lado, mediante una palanca descargará la energía que ha acumulado previamente. El diseño del componente está basado en el diferencial utilizado en la dirección dentro del sector de automoción, así como en los engranajes dotados con resortes utilizados en los coches de juguete, los cuales almacenan energía al hacerlos rotar. El nuevo dispositivo combina estos elementos aplicando modificaciones en los mismos para que su efecto se adapte a los objetivos deseados.Publication Open Access Crop type mapping based on Sentinel-1 backscatter time series(IEEE, 2018) Arias Cuenca, María; Campo-Bescós, Miguel; Álvarez Mozos, Jesús; Ingeniería; IngeniaritzaThe high revisit time of Sentinel-1 (S1) observations enables the design of crop type mapping approaches exploiting the backscatter time series observed for the different crops. The objective of this study is to propose a supervised crop classification methodology based on the temporal signature of crops. With this aim 29 dual-pol S1 observations acquired over an agricultural area of Spain, where ground truth was available, were processed. The classification approach was based on the temporal signatures obtained for each polarization channel (VH, VV and the cross-pol ratio) for the different crops. Results are compared, for the first time to our knowledge, with a commercial capacitive sensor and gravimetric measurements.Publication Open Access Inter-comparison of atmospheric correction methods on Sentinel-2 images applied to croplands(IEEE, 2018) Sola Torralba, Ion; Álvarez Mozos, Jesús; González de Audícana Amenábar, María; Ingeniería; IngeniaritzaAtmospheric correction of high resolution satellite scenery is a necessary preprocessing step for applications where bottom of atmosphere (BOA) reflectances are needed. The selection of the best atmospheric correction method to use on images acquired from new platforms, such as Sentinel-2, is essential to provide accurate BOA reflectances. In this work the performance of three atmospheric correction methods (6S, MAJA and SEN2COR) applied to Sentinel-2 scenes are compared by evaluating the resultant spectral signatures of six crop types on two specific dates, and their NDVI time series along a complete year. Although SEN2COR introduced greater corrections, especially in the infrared bands, the results suggest a varying performance of the methods depending on the land cover and the atmospheric conditions. In fuzzy rule-based models, the rule confidence gives an important information about the final classes and their relevance. This work proposes to use fuzzy measures and integrals to combine rules confidences when making a decision. A Sugeno $$\lambda $$ -measure and a distorted probability have been used in this process. A clinical decision support system (CDSS) has been built by applying this approach to a medical dataset. Then we use our system to estimate the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of the spatial resolution of Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques to parameterize surface roughness over agricultural soils. Three experimental plots (5 x 5 meters) representing different roughness conditions were measured by TLS and SfM techniques. Roughness parameters (s and l) were calculated from profiles obtained at different spatial resolutions in parallel and in perpendicular to the tillage direction on each plot. The present work studies the feasibility of an autonomous volcanic monitoring system powered by thermoelectric generators for one of the monitoring stations of the Teide National Park (Canary Island), where temperatures of 80°C at few centimeters from the surface are found. In the case of shallow Hot Dry Rock (HDR) fields, thermoelectric generators can entail a sustainable alternative to Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). The present work studies two configurations of thermoelectric generators for Timanfaya National Park (Spain), one of the most important Hot Dry Rock fields in the world, with temperatures of 500°C at only 3 meters deep. The first configuration includes biphasic thermosyphons as heat exchangers for both sides, leading to a completely passive thermoelectric generator. ELECTROVOLCAN project is developing thermoelectric generators that make use of the temperature of the available fumaroles to directly supply electricity to the stations in a robust, compact and reliable way. The main element of thermoelectric generators are the thermoelectric modules, based on Seebeck effect. Nonetheless, since the efficiency of these modules increases with the temperature difference between their sides, the introduction of heat exchangers becomes essential. This variable is usually measured by sky scanners. However, commercial sky scanners have different drawbacks related to their resolution and measurement time. An alternative to these devices is the use of sky images captured with a digital camera equipped with a fisheye lens. The range of luminances that may occur in the sky makes it necessary to use high dynamic range (HDR) images obtained by the fusion of a series of low dynamic range (LDR) images. A Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) and Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) hybrid system is a viable solution to address water shortage in arid and rural areas. The objective is to determine the feasibility of the combination of a DCMD and CPV system, demonstrate fresh water production utilizing the DCMD method and increase total CPV system efficiency. An experimental setup has been designed and built, and the results indicate a mass flux of 7.096 L/m2.h is achievable with a Polytetrafluoroethylene Membrane area of 0.0491 m2, salinity concentration of 1±0.1 % and a membrane temperature difference of 18.82 °C.Publication Open Access Comparison of digital terrain models obtained with LiDAR and photogrammetry(Springer, 2020) Martínez de Aguirre Escobar, Alejandro; García Morales, Víctor; Álvarez Mozos, Jesús; Ingeniería; IngeniaritzaAirborne LiDAR sensors capture three-dimensional information of the Earth, useful for obtaining high accuracy Digital Terrain Models (DTM). The Spanish National Plan for Aerial Orthophotography (PNOA) is an initiative of the Spanish Geographical Institute whereby nationwide LiDAR datasets are periodically acquired and made available to the public as.las files and value added products (e.g., DTM). The objective of this study is to assess the added value of PNOA LiDAR DTMs by comparing them to DTMs obtained through classical photogrammetric techniques. With this aim, four areas of interest were selected in Navarre (north of Spain), in areas with challenging characteristics such as forests, karst landforms, agricultural terraces and ravines. A 5 × 5 m DTM obtained with classical photogrammetry in 2008 was compared with a LiDAR DTM of the same pixel size obtained in 2011, assuming no significant changes occurred in this time. Height differences were evaluated, as well as slope, aspect and curvature differences. Besides, a multiresolution analysis was carried out to quantify how DTM smoothing affected height variations between neighbor pixels, measured with the standard deviation on a 5 × 5 window. The results obtained showed that the LiDAR DTMs provided an enhanced description of topography, particularly under forests and in areas with complex topography.Publication Open Access Evaluación comparativa de 19 modelos de estimación de irradiancia difusa sobre planos inclinados dependiendo del tipo de cielo estándar ISO/CIE(LNEG, 2020) García Ruiz, Ignacio; Torres Escribano, José Luis; Blas Corral, María Ángeles de; Sáenz Gamasa, Carlos; Hernández Salueña, Begoña; Illanes, R.; Ingeniería; Ingeniaritza; Ciencias; ZientziakEn este trabajo se han evaluado 19 modelos de estimación de irradiancia difusa sobre el plano inclinado, que incluyen tanto modelos isotrópicos o pseudoisotrópicos como modelos anisotrópicos. Dicha evaluación se ha llevado a cabo a partir una serie de 5396 observaciones de irradiancia global, difusa y directa realizadas entre julio y diciembre de 2018 en la estación radiométrica de la Universidad Pública de Navarra (UPNA). El estado del cielo correspondiente a cada observación se ha caracterizado de acuerdo con el CIE Standard General Sky propuesto en la norma ISO 15469:2004(E)/CIE S 011/E:2003. Para esta clasificación se han utilizado las medidas de distribución angular de luminancia y radiancia proporcionadas por un escáner de cielo ubicado en la propia estación de la UPNA. De tal manera que, para cada combinación de orientación e inclinación del plano, se ha evaluado la bondad de los distintos modelos de acuerdo con los 15 tipos de cielo estándar propuestos por la norma ISO/CIE. This chair arises due to the plummeting tendency of the percentage of women in STEM degrees with the aim of reversing this trend. The programme of activities is defined throughout this contribution by six activities: a Theatre Play, a Poster Award on Final Degree/Masters Project, The 1st Week of Women, Science and Technology, the Promotion of Technical Degrees in schools and high-schools, a Workshop about Gender Stereotypes and the Fostering of Women among Science and Environment. Each activity gained great success and the preset goals were highly accomplished, especially, the 1st Week of Women, Science and Technology activity. The latter achieved a great success both in participation and in repercussion, contributing to visualize the role of women in science and technology.Publication Open Access Automatic detection of high-voltage power lines in LiDAR surveys using data mining techniques(Springer, 2020) Chasco Hernández, Daniel; Sanz Delgado, José Antonio; García Morales, Víctor; Álvarez Mozos, Jesús; Ingeniería; Estadística, Informática y Matemáticas; Ingeniaritza; Estatistika, Informatika eta MatematikaThe correct classification of power lines in LiDAR point clouds has attracted the interest of the mapping community in the last years. The objective of this research is the detection and automatic extraction of high-voltage transmission lines from LiDAR data using data mining techniques. With this aim, a Single Photon LiDAR (SPL) survey acquired over the region of Navarre (Spain) in 2017 was used, with a mean point density of 14 pt/m2. Different data mining techniques were evaluated, including decision trees (C4.5 and CART) and ensemble learning algorithms (Random Forests, Bagging and AdaBoost). Fifteen test sites were studied corresponding to areas with high-voltage power lines over different conditions regarding the underlying vegetation and topography. For these sites 92,104 LiDAR points were identified as power lines and more than 4M points as not power lines using existing cartography. This dataset was randomly split in train and test sets and then balanced two obtain a similar amount of data for the two classes. The results obtained show the importance of balancing the training data with improvements in accuracy of ~10% with respect to the imbalanced case. Accuracies higher than 87% were obtained in all balanced cases, with particularly successful results for ensemble learning techniques, being AdaBoost the technique with the highest accuracy 91%. These results suggest that the combination of SPL surveys and data mining tools can be successfully used for the operational mapping of high voltage power lines.Publication Open Access Electrospinning technique as a powerful tool for the design of superhydrophobic surfaces(IntechOpen, 2020) Rivero Fuente, Pedro J.; Vicente Gómara, Adrián; Rodríguez Trías, Rafael; Ingeniería; Ingeniaritza; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa, PJUPNA1929The development of surface engineering techniques to tune-up the composition, structure, and function of materials surfaces is a permanent challenge for the scientific community. In this chapter, the electrospinning process is proposed as a versatile technique for the development of highly hydrophobic or even superhydrophobic surfaces. Electrospinning makes possible the fabrication of nanostructured ultrathin fibers, denoted as electrospun nanofibers (ENFs), from a wide range of polymeric materials that can be deposited on any type of surface with arbitrary geometry. In addition, by tuning the deposition parameters (mostly applied voltage, flow rate, and distance between collector/needle) in combination with the chemical structure of the polymeric precursor (functional groups with hydrophobic behavior) and its resultant viscosity, it is possible to obtain nanofibers with highly porous surface. As a result, functionalized surfaces with water-repellent behavior can be implemented in a wide variety of industrial applications such as in corrosion resistance, high efficient water-oil separation, surgical meshes in biomedical applications, or even in energy systems for long-term efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells, among others.
