Publication Open Access Compound lasing fiber optic ring resonators for sensing(SPIE, 2014-06-02) Rota Rodrigo, Sergio; González Herráez, Miguel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoa eta Telekomunikazio IngeniaritzaIn this work, we present a new method for increasing simultaneously the sensitivity and interrogation stability of fiberoptic intensity sensors. The configuration is based on a double-coupler ring resonator. On one side, the attenuation sensitivity of the sensor is enhanced by placing it inside a ring resonator. On the other side, the stability of the interrogation method is rendered close to perfect by creating an external lasing ring resonator with matched spectral response. The resulting lasers allow the stable interrogation of the sensors with an impressive sensitivity enhancement. In our experiments, the dynamic range of the intensity sensor (and consequently its sensitivity) is increased 15 dB by using this laser-based interrogation system. Simultaneously, the instability of the system is reduced to ±0.05 dB. PAH/PAA polymeric thin-films fabricated onto side-polished D-shaped optical fibers are used as LMR supporting coatings. The thickness of PAH/PAA coatings can be modified as a function of the external medium pH. As a consequence of this variation, the effective refractive index of the structure will change, producing a shift of the LMR. The fabricated sensor has been used to measure pH from 4.0 to 5.0. TiO2/ poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) coatings deposited on side-polished D-shaped optical fibers are used as LMR supporting coatings. LMRs are sensitive to the external medium refractive index and D-shaped optical fibers enable the observation of TE and TM LMR polarizations. Interesting effects have been found when the distance between bars is small, suggesting that lattice effects, arising from the interaction between the rods could be leveraged in the design of these metamaterials. The size of the metal bars is selected based on state of the art micro-manufacturing techniques. This study limits its scope to a CSH gel model; i.e. the most important component of cement-based materials. The structure is based on a PCF fiber segment spliced between two Standard Multimode Fibers (MMF) of different diameters. To do so an accurate fibre alignment procedure has been implemented in order to improve the performance of the sensor system embedded into the concrete structure when it is subjected to an accelerated corrosion test. Traditional LPF design methods often rely on well-established techniques, but they may not always deliver the desired performance or flexibility. By incorporating the Rth-passband replica of the stepped-impedance prototype, we introduce a new perspective that opens up new possibilities in filter design. This approach has the potential to overcome some of the limitations associated with existing methods, offering improved filter performance, robustness, and novel design possibilities and flexibility. Additionally, we will showcase its practical application by designing, fabricating, and measuring a 5th-order gap waveguide LPF that employs the first replica as per the provided guidelines.
