Micro-displacement sensor based on a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber
(MDPI, 2012) Rodrigues Pinto, Ana Margarida; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Baptista, José Manuel; Santos, José Luís; Frazão, Orlando; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
A sensing head based on a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber for in-reflection measurement of micro-displacements is presented. The sensing structure takes advantage of the multimodal behavior of a short segment of hollow-core photonic crystal fiber in-reflection, being spliced to a single mode fiber at its other end. A modal interferometer is obtained when the sensing head is close to a mirror, through which displacement is measured.

Internal modulation of a Random fiber laser
(Optical Society of America, 2013) Bravo Acha, Mikel; Fernández Vallejo, Montserrat; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
A characterization of a modulated random mirror laser has been experimentally carried out. Unlike conventional internally modulated fiber lasers, no distortion of the modulating frequency or self-mode-locking effects were measured. The behavior of the laser using pulsed and analog modulation up to 12 GHz is shown.

A new versatile and cost-effective interrogation system by pulsing direct modulated (DM) DFB laser diodes is proposed. 1 pm wavelength resolution and 600 m sensor spacing is demonstrated by sequentially pulsing a DM DFB.

Optical fiber sensor for water velocity measurement in rivers and channels
(Nature Research, 2024) Rodríguez Rodríguez, Armando; Diéguez Elizondo, Pedro; Urroz Unzueta, José Carlos; Bravo Acha, Mikel; López Rodríguez, José Javier; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería; Ingeniaritza; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoa eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritza; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC
In this work, optical fiber Bragg grating sensors were used to measure water velocity and examine how it was distributed in open channels. Several types of coatings were incorporated into the design of the sensors to examine their effects on the strain that the fibers experienced as a result of the water flow. Due to their low elastic coefficient, which reduced the hysteresis, the results indicated that the aluminum- and acrylate-coated fibers had the best performance. ANSYS-CFX V2020 R2 software was used to model the strain encountered by the fibers under various flow rates to assess the performance of the FBG sensors. The calculations and actual data exhibited good convergence, demonstrating the accuracy of the FBG sensors in determining water velocity. The study illustrated the usability of the proposal in both scenarios by contrasting its application in rivers and channels.

Simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature based on clover microstructured fiber loop mirror
(Elsevier, 2015) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; André, R. M.; Silva, S. F.; Becker, M.; Schuster, K.; Kobelke, J.; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Santos, José Luís; Frazão, Orlando; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this work, two all-fiber loop mirrors using a clover microstructured fiber for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain are presented. The sensing heads are formed by a short piece of clover microstructured fiber with 35 mm and 89 mm length respectively. The geometry of the fiber allowed observing different interferences created by the microstructured fiber core section. Different sensitivities to temperature and strain were obtained and, using a matrix method, it is possible to discriminate both physical parameters. Resolutions of ±2ºC and ±11 μ for the first structure and ±2.3ºC and ±18 μ for the second one, for temperature and strain, respectively, were attained.

Wavelength converter using a highly Er-doped optical fiber ring laser
(IOP Publishing, 2018) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Rodríguez, Luis; Ventura Rípodas, Daniel; López Higuera, José Miguel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
This work presents an all-fiber wavelength converter based on a highly Er-doped fiber laser, which has been experimentally demonstrated. Frequencies from several kilohertz up to tens of gigahertz have been investigated. Making use of the gain competition in the amplifying medium, the wavelength conversion can be carried out over not only one lasing wavelength, but over several. These analyses have also been carried out for more than one all-fiber ring structure, demonstrating the viability of this wavelength converter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time an Er-doped fiber wavelength converter has been validated.
