The sensing head was designed, ruggedized and customized to measure velocities at different depths, in order to calculate the discharge in open channels. A segment of this fiber is inserted into a symmetric SMF-MMF-MHCF-MMF-SMF arrangement, which provides efficient coupling to the multiple cores of the birefringent fiber and, consequently, multimode interference (MMI). Fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectral data analysis is employed to enhance measurement stability and reduce dependence on optical source variations. The sensor demonstrates a linear response to torsion angles between −50◦ and +50◦ , with a 16-mrad/◦ sensitivity. The operating principle of each sensor relied on the monitoring of the phase shift difference accumulated between the supermodes of the structure of the multicore segment in a full round trip. The strain characterization for both sensors resulted in a linear response, with sensitivities of -4.073·10-3 rad/με and - 4.389·10-3 rad/με for the aligned and V-shaped cases respectively, and one-hour instabilities below 4.6·10-3 rad with a 95% confidence level. These results suggest its feasibility in applications requiring high sensitivities over very wide strain ranges, such as heavy-vehicle traffic monitoring. This strain sensor is interrogated using a commercial optical time domain reflectometer through a dual configuration that is able to measure backscattering and the transmission of an intensity pulse while reducing unwanted cladding-mode coupling effects. The MDOF consisted of a quasi-randomly distributed reflector along a single mode fiber (SMF). A fiber cavity laser based on MDOF was experimentally studied, attaining a single-wavelength laser emission centered at 1568.6nm. The output power level obtained from this single-laser oscillation when pumped at 140mW was around - 9.6dBm, and an optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of around 45dB was measured. To do so an accurate fibre alignment procedure has been implemented in order to improve the performance of the sensor system embedded into the concrete structure when it is subjected to an accelerated corrosion test. The bending sensors are located 50 km away from the monitoring station. They are based on a simple tie displacement sensor and offer high-resolution measurements of displacement.
