Publication Open Access Coherently radiating periodic structures (CORPS) and the human eye: working principle(2005) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Ibáñez Loinaz, Asier; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper a new philosophy to design antenna systems is presented. It is based on the recently proposed Coherently Radiating Periodic Structures (CORPS). These structures are essentially a periodic structure which all the elements are radiating elements coupled coherently (in-phase). The working principle of these structures is quite similar that the working principle of the photoreceptors of the human eye detecting images, opening the possibilities to define high resolution artificial visual systems.Publication Open Access Application of coherently radiating periodic structures for feeding subarrays in limited-scan arrays(IEEE, 2023) Juárez, Elizvan; Panduro, Marco A.; Covarrubias, David H.; Reyna, Alberto; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoa eta Telekomunikazio IngeniaritzaThis paper presents a new design technique to improve the reduction of phase shifters using sub-arrays and CORPS (coherently radiating periodic structures) technology. The CORPS network generates the values of cophasal excitation with reduced input ports. These values feed an optimal sub-arrays structure. Furthermore, fixed and variable amplifiers allow a low SLL (side lobe level) by using a raised cosine amplitude distribution along sub-arrays inputs. The theoretical model of CORPS-Subarrays, numerical and experimental results of several design cases are presented. The proposed design achieves a ±14° scanning range with a higher reduction of phase shifters than other techniques presented previously in the state of art. This paper illustrates, as a contribution, the complete antenna system based on the fabrication of a prototype and experimental results to analyze the reduction capacity of phase shifters and scanning possibilities of the proposed methodology in antenna arrays. The experimental results of the BFN (beam-forming networks) prototype at 6 GHz for 11 antenna elements and 3 phase shifters are provided. The proposed design achieves a reduction of 72% of phased shifters with ±14° beam scanning and −15 dB of SLL.Publication Open Access Transición coaxial a guía doble ridge cargada(2005) Cantora Álvarez, Pablo; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper a new method to design a transition from coaxial waveguide to a loaded double ridge waveguide is proposed. This method allows the use of the large frequency bandwidth ridge waveguides present. In the example shown, a reflection coefficient smaller than -10dB is obtained in a fractional bandwidth of 250% (f1-8*f1). The similarities between the dominant TEM modes of microstrip waveguide and loaded double ridge waveguides are the basis of this design method. The complete transition is made up through an intermediate transition to microstrip waveguide. Excellent behaviour is obtained.Publication Open Access Optimum horn antennas for high order mode beam waveguides(1995) Río Bocio, Carlos del; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Thumm, Manfred; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaHigher order free space modes can be considered as serious candidates for power millimeter wave transmission in advanced material processing by using medium power CW gyrotrons. These modes can be propagated in a beam waveguide with properly designed mirrors. Here, we present some optimal ways to excite these higher order free space modes from circular symmetric cylindrical waveguide modes by using optimal non linear horn launchers. An original synthesis procedure is proposed which has been successfully tested by computational simulation.Publication Open Access Diseño óptimo de antenas de bocina multimodo para excitar un haz gaussiano fundamental de alta pureza(1996) Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper, we present an original and optimal multimode horn antenna design to excite the fundamental Gaussian beam from an overmoded waveguide. In particular, we focus the study in overmoded circular corrugated waveguide. The main idea to design this multimode horn antenna, is to increase the waveguide radius as the desired gaussian mode expands. This principle has also been applied to smooth circular waveguides to excite higher order Gaussian beams from TE0n modes. The horn antenna design considered here, improves the gaussian conversion efficiency, the crosspolarisation and the sidelobes level of some good mixture ( aprox. 85% of TE11 and 15% of TM11 ).Publication Open Access Using CORPS-BFN to feed multibeam antenna systems(2007) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper, a simple example of application of the CORPS-BFN concept has been presented. A multibeam antenna system is seen as a small part of the human eye, and therefore, improving the similarity of the whole system with the human eye, the main features of the system could be also improved.Publication Open Access Low-profile conformal UWB antenna for UAV applications(IEEE, 2019) Balderas, Luz I.; Reyna, Alberto; Panduro, Marco A.; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Gutierrez, Arnulfo R.; Institute of Smart Cities - ISCThis article presents a new design of an ultra-wideband conformal antenna for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. The antenna is a low-profile structure which is very suitable to diminish aerial vehicle drag problem. The design utilizes Rogers Duroid 5880LZ material with dimensions of 29 mm x 39 mm. The measurement results show an ultrawideband performance of the S-11 < -10dB from 2.9 GHz to 15.9 GHz. A Y-rounded shape achieves this frequency range with a parasitic circular element at the center of the structure. The acceptable radiation pattern performance is until 10.1 GHz, and the system fidelity factor is SFF > 0.9 in the maximum radiation. The proposed antenna was simulated and measured to test its performance when it is mounted on an UAV model. Publication Open Access Utilizando CORPS-BFN para alimentar sistemas de antenas de múltiples haces(2007) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThis paper present an application of the Coherently Radiating Periodic Structures - CORPS on the design of a Beam Forming Network -BFN. The Named CORPS-BFN is a novel feeding network with special behaviour characteristics that allows several improvements compared with classical feeding networks, such as, the reduction of necessary electronic to control a phased array and the possibility to have several beams very close to each other. In this paper, an analytical comparison of CORPS-BFN with both a Horn Antenna Array and a uniformly field distribution antenna will be analyzed. This study shows how applying this technology to a Multibeam antenna system the area necessary to radiate 7 independent beams can be drastically reduced.Publication Open Access Multi-channel feedarray reflector antenna based radar concept for HRWS SAR imaging(IEEE, 2021) Castillo, Javier del; Orgaz, Lara; García, Quiterio; Memeletzoglou, Nafsika; Toso, Giovanni; Imbembo, Ernesto; Biurrun Quel, Carlos; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Institute of Smart Cities - ISCLarge deployable reflector based multi-channel antenna systems are a key component of next generation SAR missions as they allow implementing multi-beam imaging capabilities and provide an efficient way to overcome the classical SAR resolution-coverage trade-off, covering wide swaths with high azimuth resolution. The presented work shows the design of a multichannel L-band SAR system and antenna architecture based on different feeders concepts and capable to map 400 km ground swath with 5 meter spatial resolution in dual polarization. The paper describes a preliminary design and architecture of the SAR system and the antenna where different design aspects including beamforming concepts and feedarray implementation techniques have been identified and assessed in view of achieving the required SAR performances while reducing the overall complexity of the solution.
