Publication Open Access Coherently radiating periodic structures (CORPS) and the human eye: working principle(2005) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Ibáñez Loinaz, Asier; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper a new philosophy to design antenna systems is presented. It is based on the recently proposed Coherently Radiating Periodic Structures (CORPS). These structures are essentially a periodic structure which all the elements are radiating elements coupled coherently (in-phase). The working principle of these structures is quite similar that the working principle of the photoreceptors of the human eye detecting images, opening the possibilities to define high resolution artificial visual systems.Publication Open Access Suberb gaussian beam efficiency corrugated horn antennas(2010) Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper we are presenting the possibilities of corrugated horn antennas that combine horizontal and vertical corrugations.Publication Open Access Study of the human eye working principle: an impressive high angular resolution system with simple array detectors(IEEE, 2006) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper the working principle of the human eye is studied since uses very simple detectors, cones and rods, to provide an impressive high angular resolution without using any kind of scanning technique. Usually the resolution capability of the human eyes has been attributed to the complexity of the brain, but it is quite difficult to understand that something, specially small details, that it has not been seen by the eyes could be generated by the brain. Finally, it will be proved that with the actual technology and design philosophy of array antenna systems, the maximum achievable angular resolution of a realistic antenna array system is seriously limited and it is equivalent to the one that it could have an insect with compound eyes. It is clear the human eye is able to overcome this limit, and the idea is to learn how to introduce this to the design procedure of antenna array systems.Publication Open Access Designing feeding networks with CORPS: coherently radiating periodic structures(2006) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThe design of feeding networks in phased array systems results tricky since all the complex excitations should be provided to all the radiating elements of the system. Where the number of radiating elements increases the complexity of the feeding network also increase significantly. In this paper we study the possibility to apply the concepts of CORPS structures to the feeding network, obtaining a general feeding network design where the excitations should be introduced before the network and not after, reducing strongly the number of phase shifters and attenuators needed to electronically scan the beam.Publication Open Access Redes de alimentación de agrupaciones basadas en CORPS(2006) Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaA new beam-forming Network concept is introduced. This Network is based in the design principles of CORPS. The new proposed structure presents an improvement in design over the traditional beam-forming Network -BFN since, with this kind of feed networks, is feasible to reduce the number of the Phase Shifters of N:1. Two implementations, based on Gysel Power Dividers, are also showed to corroborate the theoretical concepts.Publication Open Access Transición coaxial a guía doble ridge cargada(2005) Cantora Álvarez, Pablo; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper a new method to design a transition from coaxial waveguide to a loaded double ridge waveguide is proposed. This method allows the use of the large frequency bandwidth ridge waveguides present. In the example shown, a reflection coefficient smaller than -10dB is obtained in a fractional bandwidth of 250% (f1-8*f1). The similarities between the dominant TEM modes of microstrip waveguide and loaded double ridge waveguides are the basis of this design method. The complete transition is made up through an intermediate transition to microstrip waveguide. Excellent behaviour is obtained.Publication Open Access Generation of the HE11 mode from monomode smooth circular waveguide(1996) Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper, we present an original taper design to obtain the HE11 corrugated circular waveguide mode exciting with a pure TE11 monomode smooth circular waveguide mode. The proposed corrugated taper has a longitudinal section composed of two hyperbolic profiles in series, one concave and the other convex united at a point, such that the derivative is continuous. Superimposed there is an additional tapering of the corrugation depth that goes from l/2 at taper input to l/4 within the first hyperbola. This original synthesis procedure has been successfully tested by computational simulation. The calculation method has been validated be experimental results of other authors.Publication Open Access Optimized feedhorn designs for compact antenna test range at Limoges University(IEEE, 2006) Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Arnaud, Eric; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper, high technology optimized feedhorn designs are presented. These feedhorns have been designed to improve the quite zone size and behaviour at the Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) of the Antenna Research Team (OSA) from Limoges University XLIM laboratory. Very nice results are obtained maintaining the quite zone at its maximum size over the whole frequency range. The designed feedhorns present low crosspolar levels, high phase centre stability and they are very simple and small, resulting in a very low manufacturing cost.Publication Open Access Coherently radiating periodic structures (CORPS): a step towards high resolution imaging systems?(IEEE, 2005) García Esparza, Raúl; Betancourt Quiñones, Diego; Ibáñez Loinaz, Asier; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThe coherently radiating periodic structures (CORPS) uses the existing mutual coupling between the elements of an array to spread horizontally and coherently (in-phase) the complex amplitudes of each active element of the array. Despite the elements of the array were not too directive, the corporative behavior of all them, radiating coherently the same information, provides high directive beams arising from each array element, being possible narrow distances between beams. This concept applied to imaging systems, based on periodic disposition of low-profile radiating elements, could offer high resolution images in the range of microwaves and millimeter waves.Publication Open Access A stopband filter design using a 1-D non-periodic defected ground structure(Wiley, 2003) Garde Irigoyen, Ieltxu Aitor; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThe one-dimensional (1-D) defected ground structure is used to control the cutoff frequency characteristic. In this paper three non-periodic filters are built, in order to show the versatility of the DGS. Five unit cells different in shape with the same attenuation pole frequency were combined in each filter. The frequency response is essentially the same as for the case of periodic filters with equal square unit cells.
