    Stabilization of dual-wavelength erbium doped ring fiber lasers by single-mode operation

    In this work, a novel single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) dual-wavelength laser configuration is proposed and demonstrated. This laser is based on ring resonators, and employs fiber Bragg gratings to select the operation wavelengths. It includes a short piece of highly doped Er-fiber that acts as the active medium. The stable SLM operation is guaranteed when the two lasing channels present similar output powers. This behavior is shown for different pump powers.

    L-band multiwavelength single-longitudinal mode fiber laser for sensing applications

    In this work, a novel single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) four-wavelength laser configuration for sensing applications in the L-band is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor system presented here is based on ring resonators, and employs fiber Bragg gratings to select the operation wavelengths. The stable SLM operation is guaranteed when all the lasing channels present similar output powers. It is also experimentally demonstrated that when a SLMbehavior is achieved, lower output power fluctuations are obtained. Characterization of the lasing structure for temperature sensing is also shown.

    Virtual FBGs using saturable absorbers for sensing with fiber lasers

    The spectral narrowing of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) introduced by unpumped Er-doped fiber (EDF) was analyzed for fiber lasers (FL). Owing to spatial hole burning (SHB), the spectral response of a virtual FBG can be employed for narrowing the band pass filter employed to determine the lasing wavelength of laser cavities. A common FL was mounted to analyze the spectral stability of the method, and a FL sensor for strain and temperature measurements was experimentally characterized to determine the stability of the narrowing effect achieved by the unpumped EDF, which acts as a virtual FBG. The results exhibited remarkably good narrowing effects of the spectral response of uniform FBGs.

    Tunable SESAM-based mode-locked soliton fiber laser in linear cavity by axial-strain applied to a FBG

    A self-started stable tunable mode-locked (ML) soliton fiber laser in a linear cavity structure composed by commercial passive elements is presented in this paper. It is based on the combination of an Erbium doped fiber (EDF) as the active medium, and a saturated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as a partial mirror of the cavity. The other side of the cavity consists of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) acting also as the mode-locking device. The central wavelength of the FBG is selected by the application of axial strain giving rise to a tunable soliton over 8.6 nm on the C band with a variable spacing of 0.01 nm. The laser delivers 18.9 ps long pulses with a 0.14 nm bandwidth, an 8.2 MHz repetition rate, a pulse energy of 89 pJ and a peak power of 4.71 W.

    Stability comparison of two ring resonator structures for multiwavelength fiber lasers using highly doped Er-fibers

    An experimental comparison of stability between two different fiber laser topologies is carried out. The lasers are based on ring resonators that include highly-doped Er-fibers. Both topologies use fiber Bragg grating reflectors in order to select the emission wavelengths. The experimental results confirms that the novel topology based on fiber optic circulators arranged in an hybrid serial-parallel configuration offers a better stability and higher optical signal to noise ratios (OSNR) than the simpler based on a parallel configuration.

    Influence of saturable absorbers on fiber ring laser sensors

    In this work, a fiber ring laser sensor has been employed to analyze the influence of passive Er-doped fiber acting as saturable absorber. Lasing modes of fiber ring lasers can be reduced by properly locating a saturable absorber that narrows the spectral width of the FBG that selects the lasing wavelength. Employing commercial Er-doped fiber, different configurations have been evaluated, reaching the SLM regime on a ring cavity of several meters. Thus, the achieved strain response of the whole sensor behaves at its mirror FBG, exhibiting linear response to strain.

    Single-longitudinal-mode dual wavelength-switchable fiber laser based on superposed fiber bragg gratings

    n this work, a simple switchable dual-wavelength short-cavity fiber laser operating in a single-longitudinal-mode regime at room temperature and based on superposed fiber Bragg gratings is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Only by introducing stress into one of the overwritten FBGs, single- or dual-wavelength laser oscillations can be attained. Either single- or multimode operation of the laser can be easily achieved. Single-longitudinal-mode emission has been verified in two different ways: the first corroboration has been conducted by the heterodyne detection of the output signal, and the second one has been carried out by using a high-resolution optical spectrum analyzer.
