    Frequency modulated continuous wave system for optical fiber intensity sensors with optical amplification

    We report on the use of erbium doped fiber (EDF) amplification to enhance a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique for referencing optical intensity sensors located between two Bragg grating structures. The experiment combines the concept of FMCW with the spectrally selective mirror properties of Bragg gratings to interrogate with referencing properties intensity based sensors. The interrogation system without amplification yields a sensor resolution of around 0.078 dB. When the EDF amplifier is introduced into the experimental set up, the sensor sensitivity does not change, but the signal-to-noise ratio is improved, resulting into an enhanced resolution of 0.025 dB. We also obtain a remote sensing operation at a location of 50 km, showing the feasibility of this configuration to be used as a remote sensing application.

    Resilient amplified double ring optical networks to multiplex optical fibre sensors

    We report the experimental demonstration of two configurations of an amplified optical fibre double ring network for the multiplexing of sensors. The networks are designed to be inherently resilient to fibre failures because they enable simultaneous interrogation of all the optical fibre sensors using both rings. The first design demonstrates the feasibility of the so called 'dedicated protection' and the second one 'shared protection' for fibre optic intensity sensors. Raman amplification is used to overcome the losses of the couplers used in the rings, providing power transparency. The first network uses Raman amplification in both constituent rings but in the second one Raman pumping is activated only when a fibre failure occurs. We demonstrate how the topology allows the received powers from the sensors to be equalized.

    Stability comparison of two ring resonator structures for multiwavelength fiber lasers using highly doped Er-fibers

    An experimental comparison of stability between two different fiber laser topologies is carried out. The lasers are based on ring resonators that include highly-doped Er-fibers. Both topologies use fiber Bragg grating reflectors in order to select the emission wavelengths. The experimental results confirms that the novel topology based on fiber optic circulators arranged in an hybrid serial-parallel configuration offers a better stability and higher optical signal to noise ratios (OSNR) than the simpler based on a parallel configuration.
