Generation of the HE11 mode in rectangular waveguide using gaussian techniques
(IEEE, 1999) Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
A new and efficient design of a rectangular corrugated waveguide mode converter, from TE10 mode in a smooth rectangular monomode waveguide to HE11 mode in a corrugated rectangular waveguide, is proposed. The main idea is the application of Gaussian design techniques, described in the given references, previously applied in circular waveguides. By using these techniques compact and very efficient components are obtained. The obtained far field pattern is rather good as illuminator of square or rectangular parabolic reflectors, with very low sidelobes and crosspolarisation levels, avoiding the use of a rectangular to circular waveguide converter. Simulations by using the HP’s Finite Element code HFSS shown very promising results.

Circuit approach to the minimal configuration of terahertz anomalous extraordinary transmission
(American Institute of Physics, 2011) Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Navarro Cía, Miguel; Kuznetsov, Sergei A.; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this letter we present an in-depth circuit analysis of anomalous extraordinary transmission ET through subwavelength slit and hole arrrays loaded by a dielectric slab. We show the key role played by the thickness of the dielectric slab in order to enhance the transmission for TE-polarized waves incident electric field parallel to the slits or to the short in-plane period in hole arrays arranged in rectangular lattice within the cut-off regime of the apertures and to suppress Wood’s anomaly. Analytical and numerical results together with experimental data are presented, showing good agreement among them. This work provides physical insight of the underlying mechanism governing anomalous ET and offers further independent control over orthogonal polarized waves impinging into subwavelength aperture arrays.

Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) for simultaneous determination of fat and protein content in meat of several animal species
(Springer, 2017) Lozano Saiz, María; Rodríguez Ulibarri, Pablo; Echeverría Morrás, Jesús; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Beriain Apesteguía, María José; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Institute on Innovation and Sustainable Development in Food Chain - ISFOOD; Institute for Advanced Materials and Mathematics - INAMAT2
The aim of this research was to study the application of MIR spectroscopy as an alternative to conventional methods to determine fat and protein content. Samples of the main species used to produce meat products were analyzed, showing all of them absorption bands at similar wavenumbers though with different intensity. Correlation analysis of absorption intensities showed that bands around 2925, 2854, and 1746 cm−1 are associated with fat content, whereas bands around 3288, 1657, and 1542 cm−1 are associated with proteins. During the validation process, prediction models of fat and protein content were successfully obtained withR2 0.9173 and 0.7534, respectively. Finally, a good result (R2 =0.8829) was obtained on the estimation of the lipid content when the information at only one wavenumber was used.

Experimental demonstration of a millimeter-wave metallic ENZ lens based on the energy squeezing principle
(IEEE, 2015) Torres Landívar, Víctor; Orazbayev, Bakhtiyar; Pacheco-Peña, Víctor; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Navarro Cía, Miguel; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
The performance of an epsilon-near zero (ENZ) plano-concave lens is experimentally demonstrated and verified at the D-band of the millimeter-waves. The lens is comprised of an array of narrow metallic waveguides near cut-off frequency, which effectively behaves as an epsilon-near-zero medium at 144 GHz. A good matching with free space is achieved by exploiting the phenomenon of energy squeezing and a clear focus with a transmission enhancement of 15.9 dB is measured. The lens shows good radiation properties with a directivity of 17.6 dBi and low cross-polar components of -34 dB. All results are supported by numerical simulations.

High order mode beam waveguide for technological medium power millimeter wave applications
(1995) Río Bocio, Carlos del; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Marín Pilz, Miguel; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Möbius, Arnold; Thumm, Manfred; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
The use of medium power millimeter wave CW gyrotrons (10- 30 kW and 30-100 GHz) has several potential applications in advanced materials processing. Since a stochastic field distribution in the applicator is desirable no pencil beam is necessary. Then the possibility to couple the circular symmetric gyrotron output to a higher order free space mode can be considered. Beam waveguides based on iterative reflection of such high order beams on properly designed mirrors opens the possibility to increase the efficiency and to reduce costs of present compact transmission lines in gyrotron technological systems.

Low profile THz periodic leaky-wave antenna
(IEEE, 2014) Beaskoetxea Gartzia, Unai; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Rodríguez Ulibarri, Pablo; Etayo Salinas, David; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Navarro Cía, Miguel; Zehar, Mokhtar; Blary, Karine; Chahadih, Abdallah; Han, Xiang-Lei; Akalin, Tahsin; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this work, a 0.566THz flat leaky-wave antenna, consisting of a central λ0/2 slot surrounded by straight parallel wedge corrugations, is numerically and experimentally analyzed. Simulations show a moderately high gain and no significant differences when compared with a typical square corrugation profile. Numerical comparison is also made for the designed and manufactured antennas. High transmission enhancement in the corrugated case is obtained, compared to that given by a single central slot with no grooves. This kind of antennas finds several applications in different frequency ranges, including the nowadays high-interest range of the THz.

Arrangements of via-holes in microstrip lines as metallodielectric periodic structures
(Wiley, 2000) Gómez Laso, Miguel Ángel; Lopetegui Beregaña, José María; Bacaicoa, Miguel; Hernández, Jorge; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako Gobernua
In this paper, the use of via holes in microstrip lines to design periodic structures that can be regarded as metallodielectric electromagnetic crystals is analyzed. The proposed novel periodic structures achieve a notably increased reflectivity compared to that obtained with a single via hole. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are provided showing a satisfactory performance for these devices as broadband reflectors or short circuits with enhanced behavior at high frequencies.

Optimum horn antennas for high order mode beam waveguides
(1995) Río Bocio, Carlos del; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Thumm, Manfred; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
Higher order free space modes can be considered as serious candidates for power millimeter wave transmission in advanced material processing by using medium power CW gyrotrons. These modes can be propagated in a beam waveguide with properly designed mirrors. Here, we present some optimal ways to excite these higher order free space modes from circular symmetric cylindrical waveguide modes by using optimal non linear horn launchers. An original synthesis procedure is proposed which has been successfully tested by computational simulation.
