THz communications systems at carrier frequencies above 200 GHz are the key to enable next-generation mobile communication networks with 100 Gbit/s wireless data rates. One of the key questions is, which carrier frequency generation technique will be the most suitable. This is currently addressed by two separate approaches, electronics-based and photonics-based. We present in this paper a truly microwave photonic approach that benefits from the main key features of each, bandwidth, tunability, stability and fiber compatibility from photonics and power handling capability from the electronics. It is based on a Photonic Local Oscillator (PLO), generating a 100 GHz frequency, fed into an electronic frequency multiplier. A high speed uni-travelling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) provides the 100 GHz PLO for Schottky tripler diodes, generating 300 GHz signal. To feed the UTC-PD, we present a photonic integrated mode locked laser source. According to the simulations and measurements, the developed transmitter can produce a maximum of 12 μWof THz power at 280 GHz.

Experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized metasurface antenna
(IEEE, 2018) Tellechea Pereda, Amagoia; Caminita, Francesco; Martini, Enrica; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Iriarte Galarregui, Juan Carlos; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Maci, Stefano; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica
The experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized (CP) broadside-beam metasurface (MTS) antenna is presented. A radially modulated anisotropic single layer MTS has been synthesised employing sub-wavelength elliptical slotted metallic patches printed on top of a thin Arlon grounded substrate. In the structure, two decoupled phasematched transverse magnetic and transverse electric surface waves (SWs) are excited, which interact with the modulated surface leading to a CP broadside radiation. Two different orthomode transducers have been designed to excite the SWs with orthogonal polarization and equal amplitude. The first feeding system is composed of a metallic stepped septum inside an airfilled square waveguide. A conical section is included to match the output port of the square waveguide with the terminal, dielectric filled circular waveguide. The second feed is much more compact and efficient and it is composed of a circular waveguide completely filled by a dielectric. Depending on the input port excited on the feeds, two TE11 modes are excited with ±90° phase shift, which determine the right-hand or left-hand sense of the broadside beam generated by the MTS. Manufacturing details of the MTS and excitations are given and the measurements are compared with the simulation results. Finally, conclusions are drawn.

This paper presents the real-time monitoring of a grapevine’s water content that flows up through the xylem tissue by means of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. The application of an optimization process, based on the super-resolution multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, has enabled the reduction of the bandwidth required to discern the xylem water content, and thus the operating frequency, achieving a depth resolution of at least 3 mm. This design advantage has resulted in a significant step forward towards a real life application, allowing the use of fully-integrated off-the-shelf components in order to implement a completely portable low-power cost-effective radar at 23.1 GHz with a 3.4 GHz bandwidth. The sensor performance has been evaluated by means of three different experiments: irrigation cycles, day/night cycles and comparison between irrigation cycles at different temperatures. From the experimental results, it is possible to assert that the contactless sensor presented in this work is very sensitive to changes in the plant’s water content, differentiating between daytime and nighttime. In addition, it has been proved that temperature has a noticeable influence over the evapotranspiration, observing negative drying slopes of 5.62 mV/cycle and 6.28 mV/cycle at 23ºC and 26ºC respectively.

A simplified design inline microstrip-to-waveguide transition
(MDPI, 2018) Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
A simplified design of an inline transition between microstrip and rectangular waveguide is presented in this paper. The transition makes use of a dielectric filled rectangular waveguide (DFRW) as an intermediate step, which simplifies manufacturing and allows for an analytical design. The behavior of the transition has been experimentally validated in the W-band by means of a back-to-back configuration. Good performance has been achieved: a return loss greaterthan 10 dB and mean insertion loss lower than 1 dB.

Grating lobes in higher-order correlation functions of arrays of quantum emitters: directional photon bunching versus correlated directions
(MDPI, 2019) Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
Recent advances in nanofabrication and optical manipulation techniques are making it possible to build arrays of quantum emitters with accurate control over the locations of their individual elements. In analogy with classical antenna arrays, this poses new opportunities for tailoring quantum interference effects by designing the geometry of the array. Here, we investigate the Nth-order directional correlation function of the photons emitted by an array of N initially-excited identical quantum emitters, addressing the impact of the appearance of grating lobes. Our analysis reveals that the absence of directivity in the first-order correlation function is contrasted by an enhanced directivity in the Nth-order one. This suggests that the emitted light consists of a superposition of directionally entangled photon bunches. Moreover, the photon correlation landscape changes radically with the appearance of grating lobes. In fact, the photons no longer tend to be bunched along the same direction; rather, they are distributed in a set of correlated directions with equal probability. These results clarify basic aspects of light emission from ensembles of quantum emitters. Furthermore, they may find applications in the design of nonclassical light sources.

Advanced feeds for mm-wave antenna systems
(Springer, 2018) Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Iriarte Galarregui, Juan Carlos; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
Millimeter-wave antenna systems have traditionally required high performance feeds in order to fulfill its stringent requirements. Therefore, this goal has been achieved by corrugated horns. However, in the last years new applications mainly in the communication systems have driven the use of other types of antenna feed with slightly reduced performance but simpler manufacturing at mm-wave and submm-wave frequencies with improvements in cost reduction. These advanced profiles are usually based in smooth waveguide advanced profiles. Besides, the chapter describes different feed configurations based on metamaterial structures and several examples of metamaterial based or inspired antennas are considered. Then, this chapter covers the different alternatives currently used for mm-wave antenna feed: corrugated horns, spline horns, and metamaterial horns. At the end of each section, it includes some research successful results.

Quantum antenna arrays: the role of quantum interference on direction-dependent photon statistics
(American Physical Society, 2018) Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
We investigate the role of quantum interference phenomena on the characteristics of the fields radiated by an array of quantum emitters. In analogy to, but distinct from, classical outcomes, we demonstrate that the array geometry empowers control over direction-dependent photon statistics of arbitrary order. Our formulation enables the recognition of configurations providing spatial correlations with no classical counterpart. For example, we identify a system in which the angular distribution of the average number of photons is independent of the number and position of the emitters, while its higher-order photon statistics exhibit a directional behavior. These results extend our understanding of the fields generated by ensembles of quantum emitters, with potential applications to nonclassical light sources.

A Chebyshev transformer-based microstri-to-groove-gap-waveguide inline transition for MMIC packaging
(IEEE, 2019) Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
The gap waveguide technology has become an alternative to millimeter- and submillimeter-wave electronic circuit packaging thanks to the loss reduction associated with its use. In this paper, a simplified design of an inline transition between a microstrip and a groove gap waveguide (GGW) operating at the W-band is presented. The transition consists of a tapered microstrip line and a Chebyshev adapter that couple the quasi-TEM mode of the microstrip line to the so-called vertical mode of the GGW. The simplicity of this design makes this transition appropriate for monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) packaging at millimeter frequencies and above. The simulation results have been experimentally validated in the W-band. A good performance has been achieved, resulting in a return loss better than 10 dB and a mean insertion loss lower than 2 dB.

Dispersion properties of an elliptical patch with cross shaped aperture for synchronized propagation of transverse magnetic and electric surface waves
(MDPI, 2018) Tellechea Pereda, Amagoia; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Iriarte Galarregui, Juan Carlos; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica
This paper presents a novel pixel geometry for the implementation of metasurfaces requiring synchronized phase propagation of transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes. The pixel is composed by an elliptical metallic patch with an asymmetric cross-shaped aperture in the center, printed on a grounded slab. A practical implementation of a metasurface was carried out employing such a pixel geometry. Simulation results show similar frequency dispersion properties for both modes within the working frequency band, in agreement with the theoretical basis.
