Magnetic dipole super-resonances and their impact on mechanical forces at optical frequencies
(Optical Society of America, 2014) Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
Artificial magnetism enables various transformative optical phenomena, including negative refraction, Fano resonances, and unconventional nanoantennas, beamshapers, polarization transformers and perfect absorbers, and enriches the collection of electromagnetic field control mechanisms at optical frequencies. We demonstrate that it is possible to excite a magnetic dipole super-resonance at optical frequencies by coating a silicon nanoparticle with a shell impregnated with active material. The resulting response is several orders of magnitude stronger than that generated by bare silicon nanoparticles and is comparable to electric dipole super-resonances excited in spaser-based nanolasers. Furthermore, this configuration enables an exceptional control over the optical forces exerted on the nanoparticle. It expedites huge pushing or pulling actions, as well as a total suppression of the force in both far-field and near-field scenarios. These effects empower advanced paradigms in electromagnetic manipulation and microscopy.

Grating lobes in higher-order correlation functions of arrays of quantum emitters: directional photon bunching versus correlated directions
(MDPI, 2019) Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
Recent advances in nanofabrication and optical manipulation techniques are making it possible to build arrays of quantum emitters with accurate control over the locations of their individual elements. In analogy with classical antenna arrays, this poses new opportunities for tailoring quantum interference effects by designing the geometry of the array. Here, we investigate the Nth-order directional correlation function of the photons emitted by an array of N initially-excited identical quantum emitters, addressing the impact of the appearance of grating lobes. Our analysis reveals that the absence of directivity in the first-order correlation function is contrasted by an enhanced directivity in the Nth-order one. This suggests that the emitted light consists of a superposition of directionally entangled photon bunches. Moreover, the photon correlation landscape changes radically with the appearance of grating lobes. In fact, the photons no longer tend to be bunched along the same direction; rather, they are distributed in a set of correlated directions with equal probability. These results clarify basic aspects of light emission from ensembles of quantum emitters. Furthermore, they may find applications in the design of nonclassical light sources.

Experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized metasurface antenna
(IEEE, 2018) Tellechea Pereda, Amagoia; Caminita, Francesco; Martini, Enrica; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Iriarte Galarregui, Juan Carlos; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Maci, Stefano; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica
The experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized (CP) broadside-beam metasurface (MTS) antenna is presented. A radially modulated anisotropic single layer MTS has been synthesised employing sub-wavelength elliptical slotted metallic patches printed on top of a thin Arlon grounded substrate. In the structure, two decoupled phasematched transverse magnetic and transverse electric surface waves (SWs) are excited, which interact with the modulated surface leading to a CP broadside radiation. Two different orthomode transducers have been designed to excite the SWs with orthogonal polarization and equal amplitude. The first feeding system is composed of a metallic stepped septum inside an airfilled square waveguide. A conical section is included to match the output port of the square waveguide with the terminal, dielectric filled circular waveguide. The second feed is much more compact and efficient and it is composed of a circular waveguide completely filled by a dielectric. Depending on the input port excited on the feeds, two TE11 modes are excited with ±90° phase shift, which determine the right-hand or left-hand sense of the broadside beam generated by the MTS. Manufacturing details of the MTS and excitations are given and the measurements are compared with the simulation results. Finally, conclusions are drawn.

Enhancement of the power radiated by a dipole antenna at boresight by means of a left handed superstrate
(IEEE, 2006) Sáenz Sáinz, Elena; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Maagt, Peter de; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this paper a comparison between the measured radiation performances of a single dipole and a dipole with a left handed superstrate based on a finite periodic repetition of a unit cell is presented. First of all the return losses and resonant frequency of the dipole has been measured for different sizes of the superstrate, having a good impedance matching and a decrease in the resonant frequency as the number of cells increase. By using an anechoic chamber and a receiver horn antenna, the power transmitted at boresight has been measured for different frequencies, observing a filtering behaviour due to the resonant characteristic of the superstrate and an improvement of the power transmitted at the resonant frequency of around 3 dB. Comparing the H and E plane radiation patterns of a dipole and the dipole with superstrate, more symmetrical and directive radiation patterns can be observed. Finally, a comparison between the simulated and measured aperture efficiency is presented with a good agreement.

Modified Soret lenses for dual band integrated detectors at submillimetre and millimetre wavelengths
(IEEE, 2020) Torres García, Alicia E.; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
This paper presents a planar silicon integrated subharmonic mixer on top of a photonic-crystal platform. The local oscillator (LO) power is injected through a 2D photonic crystal (PC) slab to a resonant cavity that effectively couples the signal to a planar bow-tie antenna. The same antenna, which is printed on the top of the PC cavity, contains an antiparallel Schottky diode pair which performs the down-conversion. The proposed design is a simple, easy to integrate, low cost, low profile device. Moreover, the described fabrication process is compatible with active components integration. The performance of the design has been experimentally demonstrated showing good agreement with the simulation and is comparable with the state of-the-art of planar mixers. The work presented here is based on concepts and technologies from electronics and photonics domains and may be a good starting point for the creation of new devices, allowing the integration and upgrading of existing techniques from both worlds.

Upper bounds on scattering processes and metamaterial-inspired structures that reach them
(IEEE, 2014) Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
The physical limitations on time-harmonic scattering processes are investigated on the basis of the optical theorem. Previously derived least upper bounds on the total scattering and absorption cross-sections are obtained from it in a straightforward manner. In addition, it reveals a practical upper bound for the bistatic cross-section when evaluated in any direction. It is proved further that the maximum upper bound of the bistatic cross-section occurs in the forward scattering direction and that the corresponding upper bound for the backscattering direction is four times smaller than this maximum value. Metamaterialinspired electrically small antennas and scattering particles that approach these upper bounds are demonstrated. These examples numerically validate the derived upper bounds, as well as illustrate the important physical principles underlying them.

Enhanced radiation properties of a rectangular waveguide by means of a left handed media
(2005) Sáenz Sáinz, Elena; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Maagt, Peter de; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this paper, the results of experimental investigations to improve the gain between two antennas by means of a Left Handed Material (LHM) are presented. The basic idea is the use of a LHM media acting as a resonator to concentrate the power radiated by a rectangular waveguide achieving larger directivities and consequently larger gains. The transmission and radiation properties of this metamaterial (MTM) have been measured using a network analyser and two rectangular waveguides in the X band. Comparing the transmission parameter S21 with and without the LHM media between the waveguides, an appreciable improvement in the power received can be observed.

Compact bull's-eye antenna in ridge gap waveguide with circular polarization at 60 GHz
(IEEE, 2021) Pérez Quintana, Dayan; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
In this work, a Bull's-Eye (BE) antenna with circular polarization (CP) based on ridge gap waveguide (RGW) technology, working in the millimeter-wave band (60 GHz) is numerically and experimentally demonstrated. The structure is coupled through a step transition to a ridge-line that ends in two orthogonal arms of different lengths to generate CP. The wave is coupled to the top plate by a central diamond slot surrounded by the BE structure, which consists of four concentric periodic corrugations around the slot. Simulations and experimental results are in good agreement, with practical bandwidth of 6.8% with respect to center frequency and peak gain of 18.4 dB. The antenna has right-handed CP (RHCP) with polarization discrimination of more than 30 dB.

A simplified design inline microstrip-to-waveguide transition
(MDPI, 2018) Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
A simplified design of an inline transition between microstrip and rectangular waveguide is presented in this paper. The transition makes use of a dielectric filled rectangular waveguide (DFRW) as an intermediate step, which simplifies manufacturing and allows for an analytical design. The behavior of the transition has been experimentally validated in the W-band by means of a back-to-back configuration. Good performance has been achieved: a return loss greaterthan 10 dB and mean insertion loss lower than 1 dB.

A Chebyshev transformer-based microstri-to-groove-gap-waveguide inline transition for MMIC packaging
(IEEE, 2019) Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
The gap waveguide technology has become an alternative to millimeter- and submillimeter-wave electronic circuit packaging thanks to the loss reduction associated with its use. In this paper, a simplified design of an inline transition between a microstrip and a groove gap waveguide (GGW) operating at the W-band is presented. The transition consists of a tapered microstrip line and a Chebyshev adapter that couple the quasi-TEM mode of the microstrip line to the so-called vertical mode of the GGW. The simplicity of this design makes this transition appropriate for monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) packaging at millimeter frequencies and above. The simulation results have been experimentally validated in the W-band. A good performance has been achieved, resulting in a return loss better than 10 dB and a mean insertion loss lower than 2 dB.
