Publication Open Access Magnetic dipole super-resonances and their impact on mechanical forces at optical frequencies(Optical Society of America, 2014) Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaArtificial magnetism enables various transformative optical phenomena, including negative refraction, Fano resonances, and unconventional nanoantennas, beamshapers, polarization transformers and perfect absorbers, and enriches the collection of electromagnetic field control mechanisms at optical frequencies. We demonstrate that it is possible to excite a magnetic dipole super-resonance at optical frequencies by coating a silicon nanoparticle with a shell impregnated with active material. The resulting response is several orders of magnitude stronger than that generated by bare silicon nanoparticles and is comparable to electric dipole super-resonances excited in spaser-based nanolasers. Furthermore, this configuration enables an exceptional control over the optical forces exerted on the nanoparticle. It expedites huge pushing or pulling actions, as well as a total suppression of the force in both far-field and near-field scenarios. These effects empower advanced paradigms in electromagnetic manipulation and microscopy.Publication Open Access Grating lobes in higher-order correlation functions of arrays of quantum emitters: directional photon bunching versus correlated directions(MDPI, 2019) Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de ComunicaciónRecent advances in nanofabrication and optical manipulation techniques are making it possible to build arrays of quantum emitters with accurate control over the locations of their individual elements. In analogy with classical antenna arrays, this poses new opportunities for tailoring quantum interference effects by designing the geometry of the array. Here, we investigate the Nth-order directional correlation function of the photons emitted by an array of N initially-excited identical quantum emitters, addressing the impact of the appearance of grating lobes. Our analysis reveals that the absence of directivity in the first-order correlation function is contrasted by an enhanced directivity in the Nth-order one. This suggests that the emitted light consists of a superposition of directionally entangled photon bunches. Moreover, the photon correlation landscape changes radically with the appearance of grating lobes. In fact, the photons no longer tend to be bunched along the same direction; rather, they are distributed in a set of correlated directions with equal probability. These results clarify basic aspects of light emission from ensembles of quantum emitters. Furthermore, they may find applications in the design of nonclassical light sources.Publication Embargo Experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized metasurface antenna(IEEE, 2018) Tellechea Pereda, Amagoia; Caminita, Francesco; Martini, Enrica; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Iriarte Galarregui, Juan Carlos; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Maci, Stefano; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y ElectrónicaThe experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized (CP) broadside-beam metasurface (MTS) antenna is presented. A radially modulated anisotropic single layer MTS has been synthesised employing sub-wavelength elliptical slotted metallic patches printed on top of a thin Arlon grounded substrate. In the structure, two decoupled phasematched transverse magnetic and transverse electric surface waves (SWs) are excited, which interact with the modulated surface leading to a CP broadside radiation. Two different orthomode transducers have been designed to excite the SWs with orthogonal polarization and equal amplitude. The first feeding system is composed of a metallic stepped septum inside an airfilled square waveguide. A conical section is included to match the output port of the square waveguide with the terminal, dielectric filled circular waveguide. The second feed is much more compact and efficient and it is composed of a circular waveguide completely filled by a dielectric. Depending on the input port excited on the feeds, two TE11 modes are excited with ±90° phase shift, which determine the right-hand or left-hand sense of the broadside beam generated by the MTS. Manufacturing details of the MTS and excitations are given and the measurements are compared with the simulation results. Finally, conclusions are drawn.Publication Open Access Upper bounds on scattering processes and metamaterial-inspired structures that reach them(IEEE, 2014) Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ziolkowski, Richard W.; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThe physical limitations on time-harmonic scattering processes are investigated on the basis of the optical theorem. Previously derived least upper bounds on the total scattering and absorption cross-sections are obtained from it in a straightforward manner. In addition, it reveals a practical upper bound for the bistatic cross-section when evaluated in any direction. It is proved further that the maximum upper bound of the bistatic cross-section occurs in the forward scattering direction and that the corresponding upper bound for the backscattering direction is four times smaller than this maximum value. Metamaterialinspired electrically small antennas and scattering particles that approach these upper bounds are demonstrated. These examples numerically validate the derived upper bounds, as well as illustrate the important physical principles underlying them.Publication Open Access A simplified design inline microstrip-to-waveguide transition(MDPI, 2018) Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de ComunicaciónA simplified design of an inline transition between microstrip and rectangular waveguide is presented in this paper. The transition makes use of a dielectric filled rectangular waveguide (DFRW) as an intermediate step, which simplifies manufacturing and allows for an analytical design. The behavior of the transition has been experimentally validated in the W-band by means of a back-to-back configuration. Good performance has been achieved: a return loss greaterthan 10 dB and mean insertion loss lower than 1 dB.Publication Open Access A Chebyshev transformer-based microstri-to-groove-gap-waveguide inline transition for MMIC packaging(IEEE, 2019) Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de ComunicaciónThe gap waveguide technology has become an alternative to millimeter- and submillimeter-wave electronic circuit packaging thanks to the loss reduction associated with its use. In this paper, a simplified design of an inline transition between a microstrip and a groove gap waveguide (GGW) operating at the W-band is presented. The transition consists of a tapered microstrip line and a Chebyshev adapter that couple the quasi-TEM mode of the microstrip line to the so-called vertical mode of the GGW. The simplicity of this design makes this transition appropriate for monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) packaging at millimeter frequencies and above. The simulation results have been experimentally validated in the W-band. A good performance has been achieved, resulting in a return loss better than 10 dB and a mean insertion loss lower than 2 dB.Publication Open Access Broadband radar cross-section reduction using AMC technology(IEEE, 2013) Iriarte Galarregui, Juan Carlos; Tellechea Pereda, Amagoia; Martínez de Falcón, José Luis; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Maagt, Peter de; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThis paper presents the design, fabrication and characterization of a planar broadband chessboard structure to reduce the radar cross-section (RCS) of an object. The chessboard like configuration is formed by combining two artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) cells. The bandwidth limitations intrinsic to AMC structures are overcome in this work by properly selecting the phase slope versus frequency of both AMC structures. 180 degrees phase difference has been obtained over more than 40% frequency bandwidth with a RCS reduction larger than 10dB. The influence of the incidence angle in the working bandwidth has been performed. A good agreement between simulations and measurements is achieved.Publication Open Access 300 GHz optoelectronic transmitter combining integrated photonics and electronic multipliers for wireless communication(MDPI, 2019) Ali, Muhsin; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Guzmán Martínez, Robinson Cruzoe; Lo, Mu Chieh; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; García Muñoz, Luis Enrique; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio IngeniaritzarenTHz communications systems at carrier frequencies above 200 GHz are the key to enable next-generation mobile communication networks with 100 Gbit/s wireless data rates. One of the key questions is, which carrier frequency generation technique will be the most suitable. This is currently addressed by two separate approaches, electronics-based and photonics-based. We present in this paper a truly microwave photonic approach that benefits from the main key features of each, bandwidth, tunability, stability and fiber compatibility from photonics and power handling capability from the electronics. It is based on a Photonic Local Oscillator (PLO), generating a 100 GHz frequency, fed into an electronic frequency multiplier. A high speed uni-travelling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) provides the 100 GHz PLO for Schottky tripler diodes, generating 300 GHz signal. To feed the UTC-PD, we present a photonic integrated mode locked laser source. According to the simulations and measurements, the developed transmitter can produce a maximum of 12 μWof THz power at 280 GHz.Publication Open Access Parametric study of pin surface used to suppress undesired modes in a packaged W-band microstrip receiver(IEEE, 2013) Rebollo Mugueta, Ainara; Maestrojuán Biurrun, Itziar; Larumbe Gonzalo, Belén; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaA pin surface structure has been used in order to suppress undesired modes in a packaged W-band RF front-end receiver. The impact of different types of woodpile terminations on the properties of these surface modes is analyzed. For all the studied terminations there exist surface modes which must be taken into account when designing components based on this EBG structure.
