    Design of 300 ghz combined doubler/subharmonic mixer based on schottky diodes with integrated mmic based local oscillator

    In this paper the design and experimental characterization of a combined doublersubharmonic mixer based on Schottky diodes which uses a 75 GHz MMIC based local oscillator is presented. This solution integrates in the same substrate the doubler and the mixer, which share the same metallic packaging with the local oscillator. The prototype has been fabricated and measured. For characterization, the Y-Factor technique has been used and the prototype yields a best conversion loss and equivalent noise temperature of 11 dB and 1976 K, respectively, at 305 GHz. This performance is close to the state of the art, and shows the potential of this approach, which allows a significant reduction in terms of size and volume.

    A comprehensive analysis of the absorption spectrum of conducting ferromagnetic wires

    A detailed analysis of the absorption spectrum of conductive ferromagnetic wires is presented. The absorption spectrum is computed from the solution to the scattering problem, and circuit models are formulated to clarify the interplay between losses, skin-effect and wire geometry. Both infinitely-long wires and the axial resonances introduced by finite-length wires are considered. The theoretical results are validated experimentally through measurements within a metallic rectangular waveguide.

    Circuit and multipolar approaches to investigate the balance of powers in 2D scattering problems

    Circuit and multipolar approaches are presented to investigate the correlation between absorption and scattering processes in 2D problems. This investigation was inspired by earlier works of Prof.R.E. Collin, which pointed out deficiencies of the Th'evenin/Norton circuit models to evaluate the scattered and absorbed powers associated with receiving antennas and, thus, encouraged research on new analytical tools to address these problems. Power balance results are obtained with both circuit and multipolar approaches that are fully consistent. This analysis serves to illustrate how the correlation between absorption and scattering processes results in upper bounds for their power magnitudes, as well as stringent design trade-offs in both far-field and near-field source and scattering technologies.

    Low profile multi-frequency dipole antenna array based on planar meta-surfaces

    In this paper, the radiation performance of a low profile multi-frequency dipole antenna array with a planar meta-surface is presented. The meta-surface consists of two closely located parallel grids of short dipoles and one grid of continuous wires in between. By tuning a dipole to the pass band of the superstrate and due to the magnetic dipole moments induced in the unit cells, a uniform illumination is achieved and therefore an enhancement of the directivity. Placing a second meta-surface under the dipole with the stop-band tuned to the working frequency, the back radiation is reduced. By combining low and high resonant-frequency unit cells and tuning dipoles to these frequencies, a double-frequency array is formed.

    EBG superstrate antenna for WAAS bands

    Multiband antennas can simplify considerably the complexity of receivers and transmitters, reducing the size and the mass of the conventional configurations. On the other hand, applications with high directivity requirements need array designs to comply with the directivity specifications using conventional technology. EBG superstrate designs have been satisfactory applied to single band applications using a single EBG superstrate layer. The number of number of radiating elements of conventional technology designs are considerably reduced when using EBG technology. Dual band configurations have also been designed in a single layer, but when working frequencies are too close a second EBG layer is needed. A dual layer EBG superstrate which can easily be adjusted to the desired operational frequencies is presented. The design has been realized to comply with the navigation antenna requirements of Wide Area Augmentation system (WAAS) application in L1 and L2 bands.

    Moisture content estimation models of flour matrices in the 67-110 GHz frequency range using a nondestructive and contactless monitoring system

    This work addresses the lack of moisture content estimation models for food products in the millimeter-wave frequency range and showcases the potential of this range for designing compact, cost-effective, and in-line food moisture sensors. The moisture content estimation models developed in this study are intended for flour-based mixtures in the 67-110 GHz frequency range and are derived by means of a nondestructive and contactless monitoring system. To this aim, data obtained by continuous-wave (CW) vector network analyzer (VNA) spectroscopy is used to create two different models, both with a coefficient of determination ( R2 ) of 0.97. One model is based on the theoretical response obtained by means of the Looyenga effective medium theory (EMT) model, while the other is based on measured data. Both models have been experimentally validated with root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.4% and 0.35%, respectively. These small estimation errors show the potential of this frequency range to design compact, cost-effective, and in-line food moisture sensors. This research contributes to improving quality control and monitoring of moisture levels in flour-based mixtures.

    Compact bull's-eye antenna in ridge gap waveguide with circular polarization at 60 GHz

    In this work, a Bull's-Eye (BE) antenna with circular polarization (CP) based on ridge gap waveguide (RGW) technology, working in the millimeter-wave band (60 GHz) is numerically and experimentally demonstrated. The structure is coupled through a step transition to a ridge-line that ends in two orthogonal arms of different lengths to generate CP. The wave is coupled to the top plate by a central diamond slot surrounded by the BE structure, which consists of four concentric periodic corrugations around the slot. Simulations and experimental results are in good agreement, with practical bandwidth of 6.8% with respect to center frequency and peak gain of 18.4 dB. The antenna has right-handed CP (RHCP) with polarization discrimination of more than 30 dB.

    Remote sensing for plant water content monitoring: a review

    Las redes sociales se han convertido en una de las principales fuentes de información, especialmente entre los más jóvenes. Al mismo tiempo, se ha incrementado la producción y circulación de información falsa o fake news a través de las redes. En este contexto, resulta crucial que los jóvenes adquieran estrategias y competencias para realizar una lectura crítica de la información que consumen. Este estudio busca analizar el comportamiento del alumnado de secundaria ante la información falsa y el efecto de una intervención didáctica, realizada online durante la pandemia de la covid-19, cuyo objetivo era que el alumnado desarrollara competencias para detectar noticias falsas. Se trata de una investigación participativa con un diseño de pre-test y post-test. Los resultados muestran que el alumnado incrementó su competencia para identificar algunos tipos de falsedad como la información no probada y la información tergiversada, si bien tuvo problemas para reconocer información descontextualizada o el uso de lenguaje discriminatorio. Las estrategias que más utilizó son la comprobación de datos en internet y el uso de verificadores. Se observaron comportamientos diferenciados entre el alumnado que identificó la información falsa y el que no lo hizo. Las conclusiones apuntan a la necesidad de trabajar en el aula de forma integral, extensiva y transversal la evaluación de la información partiendo de las habilidades que el alumnado ya posee.

    This paper studies the surface modes at the interface of finite size Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) woodpile structures. The impact of different types of woodpile terminations on the properties of these surface modes is analyzed. For all the studied terminations there exist surface modes which must be taken into account when designing components based on this EBG structure.
