This DFOS is based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering nonlinear optical effect in optical fiber, which can be used to measure the distribution of strain and temperature along a given structure. However, contrary to existing solutions, the sensor provides dynamic real-time measurements with hundreds or even thousands of full simultaneous measurements for all positions in the fiber each second. Moreover, high-precision and high spatial resolution are obtained. This so-called dynamic Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (D-BOTDA) sensor provides real-time monitoring of the bending and torsion of the structure of solar trackers in response to wind load. This helps the solar tracker manufacturer asses and improve the mechanical designs so as to introduce corrective measures and develop cost-effective components that properly withstand the effects of wind at any given location. We experimentally demonstrate the application of a D-BOTDA sensing system to measure distributed bending and, for the first time to our knowledge, also distributed torsion along the stressed beam of the solar tracker. For this purpose, we have developed a procedure to instrument the torsion beam with two optical sensing fibers that are fixed helically wound along the beam in opposite directions, so that any common-mode thermal or bending effects are removed. We initially performed tests in a laboratory facility in which sections of the torsion beam could be subjected to controlled moments. Static and dynamic loads were applied and the measured deformations were compared to those obtained with fiber Bragg gratings, which just provide point measurements of strain. In both cases, full agreement was demonstrated. Finally, the system was installed in an operational solar park.Publication Open Access In-field torsion measurements on solar trackers using fiber optic sensors(Optica, 2020) Leandro González, Daniel; Bravo Acha, Mikel; Júdez Colorado, Aitor; Mariñelarena Ollacarizqueta, Jon; Falcone Lanas, Francisco; Loayssa Lara, Alayn; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Jiménez, S.; Achaerandio, Álvaro; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaIn-field torsion measurements on solar trackers using fiber Bragg gratings are presented. 45 FBG sensors have been deployed in an operational solar energy plant to study the mechanical response of the structure to wind.Publication Open Access Optical fiber lasers assisted by microdrilled optical fiber tapers(Optical Society of America, 2019) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Pallarés Aldeiturriaga, D.; Júdez Colorado, Aitor; Rodríguez Cobo, Luis; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; López Higuera, José Miguel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de ComunicaciónIn this Letter, we present an analysis of the backscattering generated in a microdrilled tapered fiber within a short-linear-cavity fiber laser. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber cavity laser based on a tapered optical fiber segment that generates artificially controlled backscattering. The 50-mu m-waist taper was fabricated from a standard single-mode fiber, and the taper was subsequently microdrilled using a femtosecond laser micromachining system. The laser generation properties conferred by the microdrilled optical fiber taper were experimentally investigated. A single-wavelength laser emission at 1562 nm with an output power of 10 dBm and an optical signal-to-noise ratio greater than 45 dB is demonstrated. Publication Open Access High sensitivity fiber-optic liquid level sensor using biconical tapered fibers(Optical Society of America, 2018) Júdez Colorado, Aitor; Leandro González, Daniel; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Galarza Galarza, Marko; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaA liquid level sensor is presented using a biconical tapered standard single-mode fiber, being its main characteristic an outstanding sensitivity for a low cost transducer. Biconical fibertapers converging at a 40 mm-long micro-fiber are used as transducers. The tapers are designed to providethe propagation of the two main cylindrical modes in the micro-fiber avoiding higher order modes ormodes with other symmetries. The liquid level is calculated in real time from the measurement of thefrequency and phase components of the spectral interference pattern of the submerged micro-fiber.The system is fully characterized by theoretical simulations in terms of the sensitivity as a function ofthe most responsive parameter, which is the width of the micro-fiber. Phase sensibilities of 3.7 rad/mmare experimentally obtained and values as high as 11.4 rad/mm are theoretically predicted. The strongdependence of the spatial frequency with the width of the micro-fiber has been used to multiplex threesensors in series in this domain. The maximum detected crosstalk between sensors is 0.2 rad/mm.
