Control strategy for an integrated photovoltaic-battery system
(IEEE, 2017) Urtasun Erburu, Andoni; Sanchis Gúrpide, Pablo; Marroyo Palomo, Luis; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica
In photovoltaic-battery systems, more attention is usually paid to the MPPT control while the battery management is put aside. This paper proposes two control strategies for an integrated PV-battery system, both of them making it possible to perform MPPT or regulate the battery voltage to its maximum value in order to prevent it from overcharging. Simulation results prove the feasibility of both controls.

DC capacitance reduction in three-phase photovoltaic inverters by using virtual impedance emulation
(IEEE, 2019) Urtasun Erburu, Andoni; Sanchis Gúrpide, Pablo; Marroyo Palomo, Luis; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
DC voltage regulation in grid-connected three-phase PV inverters is a fundamental requirement. In order to reduce the influence of the PV non-linear behavior and ensure stability in the whole operating range, the input capacitance in high-power inverters is currently oversized, thus increasing the converter cost. This paper proposes a control method which emulates a virtual impedance in parallel with the PV generator, making it possible to reduce the capacitance by a factor of 5. Simulation results confirm that the proposed control is stable and fast enough in the whole operating range with such a small capacitor.

Novel three-phase topology for cascaded multilevel medium-voltage conversion systems in large-scale PV plants
(IEEE, 2020) Lumbreras Magallón, David; Barrios Rípodas, Ernesto; Balda Belzunegui, Julián; González Senosiain, Roberto; Sanchis Gúrpide, Pablo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
Solar photovoltaic renewable energy systems are expanding in the power sector thanks to its increasingly competitive prices. Traditionally, large-scale PV plants have reduced their cost by increasing the power ratings of the inverters and the line-frequency transformers. However, cost-reduction limits of large-scale PV plants are being reached. Cascaded converters have appeared as a solution to continue reducing the cost of large PV plants as they reduce the wiring cost. In this paper, a novel three-phase topology for cascaded conversion structures is proposed. It only has 2 conversion steps, one without switching losses. Hence, it increases the efficiency and reduces the cost of the previously proposed cascaded conversion systems. The topology is patent pending.

New design alternatives for a hybrid photovoltaic and doubly-fed induction wind plant to augment grid penetration of renewable energy
(IEEE, 2021) Goñi, Naiara; Sacristán Sillero, Javier; Berrueta Irigoyen, Alberto; Rodríguez Rabadan, José Luis; Ursúa Rubio, Alfredo; Sanchis Gúrpide, Pablo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
Reducing carbon emissions is essential to stop climate change. The grid-share of renewable generation plants is increasing, being wind and photovoltaic plants the most common ones, whereas conventional plants are the only ones that provide the necessary services to maintain the grid stability and keep the generation-demand balance. However, with the aim of achieving carbon-neutral generation, conventional plants are being dismantled. This leads to the imminent need of providing these services with renewable plants. Due to this challenge, this proposal analyses a hybrid plant composed by wind and photovoltaic generation with two types of storage, lithium-ion batteries and a thermal storage system based on volcanic stones. In order to compare both strategies, a technoeconomic methodology is explained that allows to optimally size the plant, using the current prices of each technology. The most cost-competitive proposal turns to be the hybrid plant with thermal storage, composed by 623.9 MW installed power and 21.9 GWh of storage, which could replace a 100 MW, 24/7 conventional power plant, with an LCOHS (levelized cost of hybrid system) of 118.38 €/MWh, providing identical grid services and an equivalent inertia in a way committed with the environment. This is in turn a zero-carbon emissions solution perfectly matched to a second life plan for a conventional power plant.

On the stability criteria for inverter current control loops with LCL output filters and varying grid impedance
(IEEE, 2017) Lumbreras Magallón, David; Barrios Rípodas, Ernesto; Ursúa Rubio, Alfredo; Marroyo Palomo, Luis; Sanchis Gúrpide, Pablo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica
The use of LC and LCL filters and grid impedance variations are creating new challenges on the controller design for current control loops of photovoltaic and wind turbine inverters. In the design process, stability criteria such as Bode and revised Bode are commonly used. This paper analyses the limitations of Bode and revised Bode criteria to reliably determine stability and proposes a sufficient and necessary stability criterion, based on the Nyquist criterion, but that makes use of the Bode diagram. The proposed criterion, named generalized Bode criterion, is always reliable and helps the controller design. Relative stability in complex control loops is also studied and a relative stability analysis is proposed. Finally, the generalized Bode criterion and the proposed relative stability analysis are illustrated with a practical example in which a PI is designed in order to guarantee stability and achieve relative stability.

The generalized bode criterion: application to the dc voltage control of a three-phase photovoltaic grid-tied inverter
(IEEE, 2019) Lumbreras Magallón, David; Barrios Rípodas, Ernesto; Urtasun Erburu, Andoni; Sanchis Gúrpide, Pablo; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
As renewable energies are becoming more important in the electrical generation system, power electronic converters are facing new design issues related not only to their components but also to their control loops. In this context, the Generalized Bode Criterion (GBC) appears as a good tool to correctly determine stability and to help the controller design. In order to show the potential of the GBC and how it can be applied, this paper studies a dc voltage regulation with compensation of the photovoltaic power in a three-phase photovoltaic grid-tied inverter.
