Female labour force participation in Latin America: the case of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico & Peru

La reciente aceleración de la participación laboral femenina en América Latina es el tema de este trabajo. Desde que las mujeres ingresaron al mercado laboral, las tasas de participación en América Latina han aumentado rápidamente (duplicándose en 20 años). Sin embargo, desde 2015 las tasas de participación se han estancado. El objetivo principal del trabajo es determinar las razones detrás de esta desaceleración. Diferentes variables (y su evolución) como la educación, fertilidad y migración para Ecuador, Costa Rica, México y Perú para el período 2000-2022 han sido analizadas. Además, se desarrolla un modelo de regresión lineal para evaluar el impacto de estas variables en la participación femenina. Las variables muestran el signo esperado (a excepción de la migración). Los hallazgos no muestran que el efecto de la migración, el cual podría ser el determinante que explica la desaceleración, sea significativo. Por lo tanto, debe haber otros mecanismos subyacentes detrás de la desaceleración.

The recent deceleration of female labour force participation in Latin America is the topic of this paper. Since women entered the labour market, participation rates in Latin America have increased rapidly (doubling in 20 years). Nevertheless, since 2015 participation rates have stagnated. The main goal of the paper is to determine the reasons behind this deceleration. Different variables (and their evolution) such as education, fertility and migration are analysed for Ecuador, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru for the period 2000-2022. Moreover, a linear regression model is developed to assess the impact of these variables on female participation. Variables show the expected sign (except for migration). Findings do not show that the effect of migration, which could be the determinant explaining the deceleration, is significant. Therefore, there must be other underlying mechanisms behind the deceleration
