Viejas caducas: la imagen de la vejez femenina en la primera Edad Moderna

Los estudios sobre la vejez femenina en las sociedades preindustriales son escasos y se han centrado, por lo general, en el análisis demográfico de esta etapa de la vida. Este artículo pretende ser una contribución al estudio de la vejez femenina en la primera Edad Moderna. Aunque la visión negativa de la vejez femenina no es exclusiva de los siglos XVI y XVII, la producción literaria y artística de esta época ayudó a aumentar la carga peyorativa que las mujeres mayores han soportado a lo largo de la Historia. A su vez, esta visión negativa tuvo consecuencias en el día a día de estas mujeres, tanto en la percepción que de ellas tenían sus iguales, como en el trato que derivó de esta visión negativa.

Studies on the ageing of women in pre-industrial societies are scarce and have generally focused on the demographic analysis of this stage of life. This article is intended to be a qualitative contribution to the study of the old age of women in the First Modern Age. The negative view of women’s old age is not unique to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but the literary and artistic production of that period contributed to increasing the burden of contempt that adult women have borne throughout history. This negative view also had consequences for these women’s daily lives, both in the perception of their peers and in the treatment resulting from this negative view.
