Entre 2014 y 2022 Rusia ha impuesto sus normas con el objetivo de rusificar estas zonas y ha sido acusada de apoyar a los rebeldes y violar la soberanía de Ucrania. En febrero de 2022, la Federación Rusa inició una invasión a gran escala que agravó la situación. Durante estos 10 años los combates se han saldado con miles de muertos, heridos y desplazados. A pesar de los intentos de paz o de un alto al fuego, la situación siempre ha sido inestable y se han registrado múltiples denuncias de derechos humanos que aquí se van a estudiar. Los intereses del bloque occidental y la presencia militar rusa han hecho imposible alcanzar una resolución pacífica, enquistando el conflicto y aumentando la preocupación por el respeto a los derechos humanos.The conflict in Ukraine began in 2014 with Russia's annexation and armed conflict in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
