Los trabajos de onomástica en Fontes Linguae Vasconum

Abstract

En este artículo hago un repaso o recapitulación de los trabajos publicados en Fontes sobre onomástica. Para ello he tratado de clasificar los diferentes artículos de acuerdo con el tema que analizan, y, según esto, hablo en primer lugar de los dedicados a la toponimia, ya que son los más numerosos en nuestra revista. Después hago algún comentario de los trabajos que tratan de oiconimia, en tercer lugar me ocupo de los artículos sobre antroponimia, a continuación de los dos estudios sobre teonimia y, finalmente, analizo de manera breve las reseñas sobre obras de onomástica que han sido publicadas en la revista. El capítulo dedicado a los trabajos de toponimia es el más numeroso, como ya he dicho, y por eso he considerado necesario hacer varios apartados en él. Menciono aquí los primeros pasos dados en la revista por autores como Mitxelena, Garate y otros, a continuación comento lo que se ha dicho acerca del nombre de la capital navarra, luego explico cuáles han sido las propuestas que se han formulado acerca del nombre euskérico de la capital de Álava y, seguidamente, menciono las opiniones vertidas sobre el origen de ciertos topónimos de Navarra y Labort. En el quinto punto del primer capítulo hablo sobre lo dicho por el conocido lingüista catalán Joan Coromines acerca especialmente de ciertos topónimos mayores de la Vasconia transpirenaica; en el sexto comento, al menos superficialmente, algunas de las propuestas hechas por el tafallés R. Zierbide sobre ciertos nombres de pueblos de Navarra; en el séptimo y octavo hago un listado de los trabajos de recogida de la toponimia menor de determinadas localidades y de zonas más extensas. Seguidamente menciono los artículos que tienen por objeto dar una explicación etimológica de algunos topónimos mayores, aquellos que se ocupan de topónimos externos a la Vasconia moderna, los tres trabajitos que hablan de fenómenos románicos, y los estudios, más numerosos, que tratan de ciertos sufijos que encontramos en la toponimia euskérica. Finalmente, en el punto denominado “Otros” incluyo aquellos artículos que no tenían una fácil clasificación en los apartados anteriores. Para terminar quiero señalar que la mayoría de las veces he intentado dar mi opinión sobre los temas tratados, ya que no consideraba satisfactorio hacer una mera clasificación de lo publicado hasta el momento.

Artikulu honetan Fontes-en argitara eman diren onomastika lanen berrikusketa edo errekapitulazio modukoa egin nahi izan dut. Honetarako lanak gaika sailkatu ditut lehenik, nahiz ongi dakidan gauzak usu nahaska agertzen direla. Honen arabera, lehenbizi toponimiari eskainitako ikerketak iruzkindu ditut, hauek baitira alde handiz ugarienak gure aldizkarian. Gero aztergaitzat etxe izenak dituzten idazkiez mintzo naiz, ondoren mota bateko edo besteko pertsona izenez dihardutenez, hurbilena argitaratu diren teonimiaren inguruko bi lanak hartzen ditut solasgai, eta, azkenik, gaitzat onomastika duten liburuen erreseinen berri ematen dut. Leku izenei eskainitakoak direla eta, gauzak azaltzeko denboran zirt edo zart egin behar bainuen, aurrena lehen lanez ihardukitzea erabaki dut, Mitxelena, Garate eta besterenez, hurrena nafar hiriburuaren gainean argitaratu direnak hartzen ditut mintzagai, ondoren Arabako hiriburuaren euskal izenaren etorkiaz erran direnak, eta jarraian Nafarroako eta Lapurdiko leku izen zenbaiten inguruan jaulki direnak. Lehen atalaren bosgarren puntuan Corominesek gehienbat Iparraldeko toponimo nagusi batzuei buruz bota zituenak aipatzen ditut, laburki betiere, ez baitzen lekurik aski denen xeheki aztertzeko, gero Nafarroako herri izenez Zierbidek ematen dituen azalpenak aztertzen ditut, gainetik behintzat bai. Ondoren xedetzat herri bateko toponimia txikiaren bilketa egitea dutenak aipatzen ditut, herriz gaineko alderdietan egindakoak, zenbait (herri) izenen azalpen etimologikoaz arduratzen direnak, aztergaitzat egungo Euskal Herritik kanpoko leku izenak hartzen dituztenak, erdal kontuez dauden hiru lantxoak, atzizkien inguruko ugariagoak eta, azkenean, “Bestelakoak” izena daramanean, aitzinekoetan sailkatzen neke zirenak ematen ditut. Bukatzeko erran nahi dut gehienetan nire iritzia ematen saiatu naizela, ukitzen nituen puntuen gainean, sailkatze hutsa egitea ene irudiz ez baitzen aski.

This article is a revision or recapitulation of the articles published in Fontes on onomastics. In order to do this, I have tried to classify the different articles in accordance with the subject they analyse and, as a result, I first speak of those articles devoted to place names, these being the greatest in number. I then make some comments on works dealing with oiconymy. Thirdly, I deal with articles on anthroponymy. I then look at the two studies on theonymy before finally briefly analysing reviews of onomastics published in the journal. The chapter on place names involves, as already mentioned, the largest number of articles and, consequently, I thought it necessary to divide it up into several sections. I mention here the first steps taken in the journal by authors such as Mitxelena, Garate and others; I then comment on what has been said about the name of the capital of Navarra before going on to explain the proposals formulated about the Basque name of the capital of Alava; opinions about the origins of certain toponyms from Navarra and Labourd are then mentioned. The fifth part of the first chapter speaks of what the well-known Catalonian linguist Joan Coromines had to say regarding, above all, certain major toponyms from the trans-Pyrenean Basque lands; in the sixth point, I comment, albeit superficially, on some of the proposals of the Tafalla-born linguist R. Zierbide about the names of certain villages in Navarra; the seventh and eighth points contain a list of works collecting the minor toponymy of certain localities and larger areas. I then mention those articles which aim to give an etymological explanation of some major toponyms, those which deal with toponyms external to the modern Basque Country, the three works which speak of Romance phenomena and those articles, greater in number, which deal with certain suffixes found in Basque toponymy. Finally, in a section under the title of “Others”, I include those articles which were not easily classified in the previous sections. To end, I would like to point out that, in most cases, I have tried to give my own opinion regarding the subjects dealt with, considering insufficient a mere classification of what has been published to date.
