La comunidad judía de Sangüesa (c. 1080-1412): Economía, sociedad

Abstract

De las cuatro comunidades judías instaladas en las cabeceras de merindad, la de Sangüesa es la que presenta unos orígenes más oscuros y una posterior evolución más azarosa. Con anterioridad, en 1988, tratamos de ofrecer una primera visión de dicha judería, contemplada desde una vertiente muy concreta: el crédito y otras actuaciones mercantiles en su relación con los cristianos de esta villa, según los datos disponibles en el único material conocido en aquel entonces: el casi centenar de cartas contenidas en el registro del sello del Pero Andreo, guardasellos del rey, del año 1363. Después, en los últimos lustros, han aparecido nueve registros más y, en consecuencia, el número de actas referidas a judíos se ha triplicado. Asimismo, la edición del corpus documental, conocido como la Navarra Judaica, ha ampliado de forma notable el caudal de información hasta ahora conocido. Ante esta duplicidad de incentivos, parecía necesario analizar el devenir histórico de este grupo humano en la larga duración, unos tres siglos. Los aspectos más destacados han sido, a nuestro entender, la dinámica de los asentamientos: burgos y juderías (1080-1298); la inmigración, la violencia y la estabilidad demográfica en la primera mitad del siglo XIV, pero una vez que se ha hecho frente a la primera embestida de la Gran Peste de 1348; el decline, motivado por pérdidas de vidas humanas, violencias y asaltos, tuvo sus fases de recuperación, observables desde esa singular atalaya que es el comercio del dinero, negociado bajo fórmula de simples cartas de obligación o préstamo.. Este mercado del crédito se vería favorecido por su condición por su incuestionable condición de núcleo urbano, etapa destacada de la ruta de peregrinación a Santiago de Galicia.

Of the four Jewish communities in Navarra’s market towns, the Sangüesa community reveals the obscurest origins and most turbulent history. In 1988, we tried to provide an initial image of this Jewish quarter, as seen from a very specific viewpoint: credit and other trading transactions with the town’s Christian community according to information from the only source known at the time: the nigh-on one hundred letters in the 1363 stamp register of Pero Andreo, the King’s Keeper of the Seal. Nine more registers have appeared since then and, consequently, the number of entries referring to the Jews has tripled. Likewise, the publication of the documentary corpus, known as Navarra Judaica, has significantly increased the flow of information known to date. With these incentives, it seemed necessary to analyse the historical fate of this group over a long period, some three centuries. The most relevant aspects, as we understand it, were the dynamics of the settlements: boroughs and Jewish quarters (1080-1298); the immigration, violence and demographic stability of the first half of the XIV century once the first onslaught of the Great Plague of 1348 was over; decline, in terms of human loss, violence and attacks, did go through stages of recovery, which can be observed from the unique viewpoint offered by the money trade, negotiated with simple letters of credit or loan. This money-lending market was fanned by the town's unquestionable importance as an urban nucleus and its being a significant stage on the pilgrims’ route to Santiago in Galicia.
