Notas sobre el crédito cristiano en la villa de Sangüesa y su Merindad (1342-1411)

Abstract

La escribanía de Sangüesa y, pese a lo reducido de la muestra conservada, las de algunas villas de su merindad (Lumbier, Urroz y Aoiz) son, junto con la de la capital del reino las que protocolizan un mayor número de actas en las que ambos sujetos son cristianos. Actas casi exclusivas de reconocimiento de deuda, tanto en su modalidad de simples préstamos, como los negociados bajo la fórmula de comandas. A ello habría que añadir las compraventas de bienes raí ces, sacadas a pública subasta por impago de deudas. Todo este material constituye una fuente de primer orden. Consciente de ese valor, hemos tratado de presentar, siquiera de forma breve, este amplio muestrario de gentes y situaciones, derivadas de esa práctica, tan extendida por el Occidente cristiano medieval, que es el crédito a interés, tanto en el mundo rural como en el urbano. Un hecho digno de mención es el elevado número de “hipotecas”, muchas de ellas derivadas de la correspondiente manda testamentaria. Habría que ver si este “crédito hipotecario” obedece al normal desarrollo de un mercado inmobiliario y de otros bienes raíces o es causa de un endémico endeudamiento de la sociedad instalada en este sector nor-oriental del reino.

The clerkship of Sangüesa and, despite the reduced scale of the samples preserved, those of some villages in the Sangüesa district (Lumbier, Urroz and Aoiz), were, together with that of the capital of the kingdom, those which formalised the greatest number of documents in which both subjects were Christian. Documents almost exclusively of acknowledgement of debt, both in the form of simple loans and those negotiated under the formula of comandas. To these, documents of purchase of real assets, put out to public auction for default on debts, should be added. All of this material constitutes a first-rate source. Aware of its value, we have attempted to present, albeit in brief, this generous sample of people and situations derived from the practice of credit with interest so widespread in both the rural and urban worlds of the mediaeval Christian west. A point worthy of mention is the great number of “mortgages”, many derived from the relevant bequest. It would be necessary to see whether this “mortgage credit” obeyed the normal development of a market of real estate and other real assets or whether it was the cause of an endemic indebtedness of society in this north-eastern part of the kingdom.
