La disfagia se trata de un sintoma, y no una enfermedad, que se caracteriza por la
dificultad para la deglucion a la hora de formar y/o mover el bolo alimenticio desde
la boca hasta la parte superior del esofago. Dependiendo de la parte anatomica

La disfagia se trata de un sintoma, y no una enfermedad, que se caracteriza por la
dificultad para la deglucion a la hora de formar y/o mover el bolo alimenticio desde
la boca hasta la parte superior del esofago. Dependiendo de la parte anatomica
alterada se reconocen dos tipos, la disfagia esofagica y la disfagia orofaringea, siendo
mas frecuente esta ultima.
Los grupos de pacientes que mas se ven afectados por esta alteracion son los
enfermos neurodegenerativos, los pacientes con accidente cerebrovascular y los
ancianos fragiles. Afecta al 56-78% de los ancianos institucionalizados, al 44% de los
ancianos ingresados en un hospital y al 25% de los ancianos que viven en su domicilio.
A pesar de su alto impacto negativo en la capacidad funcional, salud y calidad de vida
de los ancianos, es uno de los sindromes geriatricos menos conocidos e
infradiagnosticados a nivel mundial.
Esta alteracion en la deglucion provoca complicaciones graves como la malnutricion,
la deshidratacion y la broncoaspiracion, incrementando el indice de
morbimortalidad, los reingresos hospitalarios y los costes sanitarios.
En el presente documento se realiza una revision bibliografica sobre la disfagia
orofaringea, con el objetivo de elaborar una guia de apoyo para el equipo sanitario
multidisciplinar en el manejo y deteccion precoz de la disfagia orofaringea del
anciano. Se incluye un algoritmo de actuacion para el profesional sanitario y un
triptico con recomendaciones para el paciente y/o cuidador. En este proceso va a
tener un imprescindible papel el profesional sanitario de enfermeria. [--]

In the present document, a literature review on oropharyngeal dysphagia is carried
out, with the objective of preparing a support guide for the multidisciplinary health
team in the management and early detection of the oropharyngeal dysphagia of the
elderly. It includes an action algorithm for the health professional and a triptych with
recommendations for the patient and / or caregiver. In this process the nursing health
