The use of drip irrigation has increased in recent years, giving place to its application in watering blankets. This
system shows multiple benefits, including the savings and better distribution of water. Even though the emitters
are protected by the blanket, the main problem with localized irrigation, the obturation of emitters due to the
intrusion of roots and ground, is still manifesting.
In this investigation, multiple natural and chemical primers have been tested as
repellents of radicular growth.
The tested primers are: cornstarch on different concentrations (“E”, “F”, and “G”) and nanoparticles (“N”).
Two
commercial products have been used as witnesses: pendimethalin and copper sulphate. Both primers were used
on
small “pots” built from the same material used for subsurface irrigation blankets.
Before starting field experimentation, the primed samples have been exposed to high temperatures on different
time intervals, so as to induce 4 degrees of deterioration on the material. 96 different treatments result from
the combination of all analyzed variables. Once the plant reaches ripeness, the pot is unearthed and
photographed. Ultimately, the amount of roots that have crossed the blanket is evaluated through image
analysis and statistical techniques.
The experimentation results show that treatments with primer of type “N” (nanopar
ticles) have a superior,
though not remarkably so,
behaviour than its commercial equivalent. The remaining primers (cornstarch + latex
in different concentrations) have not shown significant behaviour improvements with respect to their respective
witnesses. Therefore, we can conclude that primer “N” is the most effective as radicular repellent. [--]
