Conventional biofuel synthesis is carried out by the vegetable oils’ triglycerides transesterification
with alcohol (methanol, generally) with basic catalysts. This process takes place in a heterogeneous
system formed by a lipidic and alcoholic phase. While the lipidic phase is constituted mainly by
triglycerides, methyl esters (biofuel), and diglycerides and monoglycerides (intermediate products), the
alcoholic one is composed mainly by alcohol (methanol) and glycerol, as the reaction by-product. The
reaction temperature, the quantity of catalyst and the molar ratio oil: methanol determine the rate at
which the transesterification proceeds. At a given temperature, the initial reaction rate is controlled by
the catalyst concentration in the alcoholic phase where it is dissolved. As a general rule, the evolution
of the diglycerides and monoglycerides content are determined by reaction temperature and the
oil/methanol molar ratio. In this work, the synthesis of biofuel from residual cooking oil with methanol
in the presence of NaOH as catalyst is studied. It has been looked over the implications of: i) the alcohol
molar ratio; ii) the catalyst concentration range; iii) the reaction temperature. Some significative
differences in the oil conversion depending on the selected reaction conditions have been found.
Working at the same temperature and NaOH concentration, the increase in the methanol-oil molar ratio
gives as a result a greater oil conversion, as well as a higher biodiesel yield, which translates into lower
yields of monoglycerides and diglycerides, the higher is the amount of alcohol used. On the other hand,
catalytic results vary depending on the ratio of alcohol used. Thus, the difference in the oil conversion
evolution, when catalyst concentration varies, is more or less significant depending on the excess of
methanol used. Two instrumental analysis techniques have been studied in order to monitorize the
transesterification reaction: size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and refractive index (nD). A
mathematic model has been formulated that relates both techniques, allowing the estimation of the oil
conversion in a wide range of reaction conditions, from the measurement of the refractive index of the
alcoholic phase. The results of this work have allowed to establish a simple, fast and reliable method
for monitoring the reaction. [--]
