En el artículo se nos describe el proceso económico español de los años cincuenta. Una etapa que se abrió y se cerró con dos momentos críticos para la dictadura franquista: el fracaso de la economía autárquica, primero; el riesgo de suspensión de pagos que obligó al gobierno a regresar –como dice el autor- al redil de la economía liberal, después. Una etapa que coincide con dos momentos importantes en la vida de Vicens Vives: su acceso a la cátedra de historia universal y contemporánea en la Universidad de Barcelona en 1948 y su muerte, acaecida en 1960. Un proceso económico que permitió a la dictadura franquista regresar al mercado internacional y cuyo desarrolló coincidió – no caprichosamente- con la vuelta de algunos intelectuales del interior al espacio académico europeo y norteamericano. Ese contacto con el exterior acaba siendo el hilo conductor que utiliza el autor en su artículo para revisar el contexto histórico de la segunda fase de la autarquía. [--]

The article describes the Spanish economic process in the fifties. A stage that opened and closed with two critical moments for the Franco dictatorship: first, the failure of the autarkic economy, and then the risk of bankruptcy, forcing the government to back –as the author says- to the fold of liberal economics. A stage that coincides with two important moments in the life of Vicens Vives: his access to the chair of world contemporary history, at the University of Barcelona in 1948, and his death in 1960. An economic process that allowed the return of Franco dictatorship to the international market, and whose development coincided (not capriciously) with the return of some intellectuals from inside to the European and U.S. academic space. That contact with the outside ends up being the thread that uses the author in his article to review the historical context of the second phase of autarky. [--]
