Lan honetan onomastikak, inguruko izenek, gure bizian duten garrantziaz gogoeta egiten dugu.
Pentsa daitekeenaz bestera, onomastikak denok ukitzen gaitu: denek ditugu izen-deiturak, denak
sortu gara herrian edo hirian, honelako kaletan bizitu gara eta oraino bizi gara, halako ikastetxetan
ikasi dugu, bizikleta edo autoa izan dugu, denok izan dugu gustuko musika talderen bat edo

bestetarikoa, ez dago deus izengaberik, denak du deizioa. Bestalde, onomastikan erabili ohi den
terminologia aurkezten dugu, dituen bi adar handiak partikularzki, jende izenena eta leku izenena,
eta pil-pilean dauden termino arazo batzuk ukitzen ditugu. Jarraian, euskal toponimoen oinarrian
dagoen motibazioa aipatzen dugu, eta, buruenik, gure kultura eremuan dakuskigun izen joerak
aztertzen ditugu. [--]

In this paper we reflect on the important role that onomastics, the names of the things that surround
us, plays in our lives. Contrary to what could be believed, onomastics affects us all: we all
carry names and surnames, we were all born in a town or city, we all lived and still do in a specific
street, we all studied in a particular school, owned a bike or car, liked a certain music band... And
all these things bear names, be they Basque, Spanish, English or otherwise; there is nothing that
is nameless, everything has a name. On the other hand we make a brief introduction into the terminology
used in onomastics, particularly in the two main branches of this field: toponomastics
and anthroponomastics, in addition to dealing with the most controversial terms at present. Next
we analyze the motivation that underlies Basque toponyms, and, inally, we examine the naming
tendencies that we observe in the current population in our cultural environment. [--]
