Publication Open Access Deciphering the function of Com_YlbF domain-containing proteins in Staphylococcus aureus(American Society for Microbiology, 2025) Corredor Rozo, Zayda Lorena; Marquez-Ortiz, Ricaurte Alejandro; Velandia-Romero, Myriam Lucia; Abril Riaño, Deisy Julieth; Madroñero, Leidy Johana; Prada, Luisa F.; Vanegas-Gomez, Natasha; García Martínez, Begoña; Echeverz Sarasúa, Maite; Calderón-Peláez, María Angelica; Chaparro-Olaya, Jacqueline; Morales de la Pava, Liliana; Nieto-Clavijo, Carlos; Escobar-Pérez, Javier; Ciencias de la Salud; Osasun ZientziakThe Com_YlbF domain-containing proteins inhibit sporulation, competition, and biofilm formation by affecting the activity of ribonuclease RNase-Y in Bacillus subtilis. Similar Com_YlbF proteins are found in Staphylococcus aureus, but their function is yet to be determined. This study investigates the role of Com_YlbF domain-containing proteins (Qrp/YheA, YmcA, and YlbF) in S. aureus by evaluating the impact of qrp/yheA, ymcA, and ylbF gene deletion on biofilm formation, PIA/PNAG production, and hemolytic capacity. It was found that deletion of the three qrp/yheA, ymcA, and ylbF genes in S. aureus produced a decrease in biofilm formation, a slight decrease in PIA/PNAG production, and a decrease in its hemolytic capacity. Global transcriptional analysis in the mutant strain showed dysregulation of several genes associated with pathogenesis, most notably a decreased expression of the agrA gene (quorum sensing system), the delta, alpha, and gamma hemolysins, as well as the sdrC genes and eap/map (adhesion proteins) genes. It also showed an attenuation of virulence, manifesting as enhanced survival among Galleria mellonella larvae and BALB/c mice, possibly associated due to disrupted RNase-Y activity when the qrp/yheA, ymcA, and ylbF are deleted. In conclusion, this work supports the hypothesis that this new family of proteins containing a Com_YlbF domain is involved in the regulation of genes related to biofilm formation, hemolysis, and virulence in S. aureus through a change in RNase-Y activity. This paper aims to investigate the effect of fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing parameters on surface roughness, dimensional error and density of glass fiber-filled polypropylene (GF/PP) parts. It is a promising material to be used to obtain surgical models for bones, due to its high thermal and mechanical properties. Design/methodology/approach. The experimental approach focuses on the manufacture of cuboid parts, measurement of surface roughness, dimensions and mass, and the use of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) models to analyze the influence of 3D printing parameters such as printing temperature, print speed (PS), nozzle diameter (ND) and layer height (LH) on the responses. Multi-objective optimization using the desirability function is then applied to determine the optimal 3D printing parameters. In addition, the results of the ANFIS models were compared to other machine learning models such as genetic algorithm, support vector machine for regression and random forest for regression. Findings. The research identifies the optimal 3D printing parameters recommended to simultaneously minimize surface roughness and dimensional error, and to maximize density. Specifically, the optimal parameters were identified as a low temperature of 230°C, a moderate print speed of 20 mm/s, a large nozzle diameter of 0.8 mm and a low layer height of 0.1 mm. Originality/value. This study will help select appropriate 3D printing parameters for fabricating surgical models using GF/PP, a material that has only recently become commercially available for FFF processes, and has therefore been scarcely explored in the literature for such applications.Publication Open Access Integrative elements repeatedly captured the phaseolotoxin biosynthesis gene cluster and invaded Pseudomonas syringae multiple times(APS, 2025-09-01) Oliveira, Luiz Orlando de; Rody, V. S.; Aguilera, Selene; Murillo Martínez, Jesús; Agronomía, Biotecnología y Alimentación; Agronomia, Bioteknologia eta ElikaduraPhaseolotoxin is a virulence factor of Pseudomonas amygdali pv. phaseolicola (Pph) and P. syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). Herein, we explore the evolutionary history of a genomic island (Tox island) composed of an integrative element (GInt) carrying the 23-gene cluster (Pht cluster) for biosynthesis of phaseolotoxin and toxin resistance. Our analyses indicate that the Pht cluster has been acquired, either naked or associated with a GInt, on seven independent occasions by four phylogroups of the P. syringae complex (Pph, Psa, P. caricapapayae, and P. syringae pv. syringae) and the phylogenetically distant rhizobacterium Pseudomonas sp. JAI115. The Pht cluster was independently captured by three distinct GInt elements, suggesting specific mechanisms for gene capture. Once acquired, the Tox island tends to be stably maintained, evolving with the genome. The likely evolutionary trajectory of the Tox island within Pph and Psa involved (i) acquisition by Pph; (ii) transfer of the Tox island from Pph to Psa biovar 1; (iii) independent acquisition from unknown sources of a different version of the Tox island by Psa biovar 1, generating a second toxigenic lineage; (iv) independent acquisition from unknown sources of a third version of the Tox island by Psa biovar 6; and (v) replacement of the Tox island in Pph by a distantly related GInt, generating nontoxigenic isolates. These findings underscore the potential role of phaseolotoxin in bacterial fitness and contribute to our understanding of the evolutionary dynamics of mobile genetic elements and virulence evolution in bacterial plant pathogens. Publication Open Access ZnAl-MMO, synthesized with Al extracted from saline slags, combined with carbon nitride and gold nanoparticles for the catalytic photodegradation of antibiotic norfloxacin(Elsevier, 2025-12-25) Santamaría Arana, Leticia; Korili, Sophia A.; Gil Bravo, Antonio; López de Luzuriaga Fernández, José Manuel; Monge Oroz, Miguel; Ciencias; Zientziak; Institute for Advanced Materials and Mathematics - INAMAT2; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaMixed metal oxides (MMO) formed from Zinc-Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH), synthesized with Al extracted from saline slags, were combined with carbon nitride with a simple vapor deposition method, to form 2D/2D heterostructured photocatalysts. Two calcination temperatures were tested for the synthesis of MMO (520 and 850 ºC) and their performance was tested for the degradation of the antibiotic norfloxacin under visible light. In addition, these catalysts were impregnated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in two metal weight percentages (0.5 and 1 wt%) to evaluate if there was an improvement in the composites¿ catalytic performances. Samples were characterized by PXRD, TEM, XPS, TGA, FTIR, DRS and FL. Results obtained show that the introduction of Au NPs in the composite improves the degradation efficiency of norfloxacin and that, when the catalyst is capable of adsorbing the contaminant, a lower calcination temperature outperforms the benefits of the spinel presence.Publication Open Access Ethylene biosynthesis in legumes: gene identification and expression during early symbiotic stages(Oxford University Press, 2025-02-25) Gómez Fernández, Germán Orlando; Velzen, Robin van; Mun, Jeong-Hwan; Cook, Douglas R.; Kohlen, Wouter; Larrainzar Rodríguez, Estíbaliz; Ciencias; Zientziak; Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Applied Biology - IMAB; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaThe final steps of ethylene biosynthesis involve the consecutive activity of two enzymes, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase (ACS) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ACO). These enzymes are encoded by small gene families, which, in the case of legumes, have not been systematically characterized at the level of gene family membership or phylogenetic relationship. Moreover, the absence of consensus nomenclature complicates comparisons within the scientific literature, where authors are addressing the roles of these genes in planta. In this study, we provide a framework in which the ACS and ACO gene family members of several legume species, including the two model legumes Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus, were systematically annotated, named, and analysed relative to genes from other dicot and monocot model species. A combination of phylogenetic and reciprocal BLAST analyses was used to identify evolutionary relationships among genes, including the identification of orthologous relationships that can inform hypotheses about function. Given the role of ethylene as a negative regulator of the legume-rhizobium symbiosis, we queried publicly available RNA-seq expression datasets to obtain an overview of the expression profiles of these genes in the interaction between M. truncatula and its nitrogen-fixing microsymbiont. The resulting evolutionary framework, as well as structural and expression analyses, are intended to facilitate ongoing functional studies in legumes.Publication Open Access Valorization of an industrial pollutant residue as a teaching tool: extraction of AI3+ from aluminum saline slag(MDPI, 2025-09-15) Jiménez, Alejandro; Trujillano, Raquel; Korili, Sophia A.; Gil Bravo, Antonio; Vicente, Miguel Ángel; Ciencias; Zientziak; Institute for Advanced Materials and Mathematics - INAMAT2Aluminum is the most used non–ferrous metal. It can be recycled saving several natural resources, but generates large amounts of residues with a complex composition—still containing a valuable amount of aluminum, although also including contaminant compounds. The laboratory-scale valorization of an industrial aluminum residue is here used as a powerful didactic resource in Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry and related fields such as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, and related university degrees, since concepts like acid-base properties (particularly amphoterism), redox reactions, speciation diagrams, or solubility–precipitation concepts are applied. The students are encouraged to look for information on the topic, to teamwork, and to elaborate a well-written laboratory report. At the same time, this laboratory work introduces them to advanced laboratory techniques and to incorporate concepts of Circular Economy and various Sustainable Development Goals, educating the students with respect to the environment. Although focused on University studies, this manuscript also contains excellent ideas for secondary teachers to motivate STEM vocations, particularly for Chemistry and Chemical and Environmental Engineering, and is also ideal for being included in the preparation of future Secondary School teachers.Publication Open Access Assessing sustainability in rural tourism: insights from accommodation managers and residents in Navarre(Elsevier, 2025-12-01) Samper Mendívil, Maider; Aramendia Muneta, María Elena; Alarcón López, Rocío; Gestión de Empresas; Enpresen Kudeaketa; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaThis paper aims to assess the sustainability of rural tourism in the Spanish region of Navarre, with a focus on its economic, environmental and sociocultural dimensions. To adopt a holistic perspective, we first analysed sec- ondary data from local residents provided by the Navarre Tourism Observatory. Subsequently, we conducted a survey among rural accommodation managers to gain insights from the tourism supply side. The combined approach allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how rural tourism is evolving in the region. Our findings reveal a range of successful practices, as well as challenges that persist. In that vein, rural tourism contributes to economic development and cultural preservation; however, concerns such as overcrowding, low job quality and environmental degradation remain unaddressed. Moreover, certain geographic areas are falling behind in implementing sustainable tourism practices, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. To ensure long-term viability, it is essential to promote responsible tourism practices, support community well-being and alleviate environmental pressures. Additionally, involving local communities in tourism planning helps ensure an equitable distribution of benefits and fosters the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Among the three sustainability dimensions, the environmental domain holds the greatest potential for improvement. Actionable recommendations include policies to manage visitor flow, promote responsible tourism practices, and enhance stakeholder collaboration. We argue that this research offers valuable guidance in sustainable tourism development, particularly for regions highly dependent on tourism and comparable in size and characteristics to NavarrePublication Open Access Pigmalión en el aula: la traducción de una obra literaria como recurso en la enseñanza de idiomas en Educación Secundaria(Universidade da Coruña, 2025-08-21) Goñi Alsúa, Edurne; Ciencias humanas y de la educación; Giza eta Hezkuntza ZientziakLa traducción como herramienta didáctica para la enseñanza de las segundas lenguas vuelve a abrirse camino en las aulas de Educación Secundaria como un recurso docente más, adaptada a las necesidades del alumnado actual. This study presents a crossnational comparative study of the mathematical identities of a sample of preservice and inservice primary teachers in the partner institutions (in Italy, France and Spain) of a specific European project in the area of innovation. Given that preservice and inservice teachers' mathematical identities have been forged throughout diverse experiences during their school years, and are informed, among other factors, by their beliefs and attitudes, a questionnaire was designed and delivered seeking to identify preservice and inservice teachers' experiences, beliefs and attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching. This paper presents the manner in which this questionnaire has been used to set up diverse profiles of preservice and inservice primary teachers. Moreover, a deep analysis of the responses given to the questionnaire has allowed us to identify specific particularities which may be associated with the different countries involved in the project, distinguishing these from their shared beliefs and attitudes. In addition, implications for the design of interventions capable of promoting trust, enjoyment, and human expression in the mathematics education of preservice and inservice teachers are presented.Publication Open Access Effects of scoring system manipulation on tactical, conditional, and emotional responses in rugby union academy players(Palacký University in Olomouc, 2025-09-08) Sorreluz-Uria, Juan; Los Arcos Larumbe, Asier; Aginaga García, Jokin; González-Artetxe, Asier; Ingeniería; Ingeniaritza; Institute of Smart Cities - ISCBackground: rugby union coaches design small-sided games (SSGs) by altering task conditions to guide players toward the desired objectives. Placing greater value on scoring a try in the centre of the in-goal area may encourage players to play more centrally. Objective: to compare the tactical and conditional responses, along with perceptions of enjoyment and competence, of rugby union academy players during regular (SSGREG) and conditioned (SSGCOND) SSGs. Methods: Sixteen U18 male rugby union players competed in two 4 × 5 min eight-a-side games (219 m2 per player) with (SSGCOND) and without (SSGREG) triple point value in the central part of the in-goal area. Players' tactical (central tendency and approximate entropy measures of surface area, length, width, dyads, and stretch and spatial exploration indices) and conditional (total distance travelled and distances at different speed zones) responses were assessed using GPS data. Players also rated their enjoyment and perceived competence for each SSG. Results: young rugby union players significantly (p < .05) occupied less space (surface area: r = .13; length: r = .05; width: r = .24), played closer together (dyads: r = .16; stretch index: r = .14) and explored less (r = .63) in the SSGCOND than in the SSGREG, with no differences in entropy measures (p > .05) across task conditions. They also ran significantly (p < .001) more overall (d = 1.21) and at low-to-medium speed (d = 0.85) but not at higher speeds (p > .05) in the conditioned scenario than in the regular one. Players' perceptions of enjoyment and competence did not differ (p > .05) across SSGs. Conclusions: manipulating the scoring system in rugby union SSGs encouraged players to play more compactly and run more, with no changes in distances travelled at highest speeds nor in perceptions of enjoyment and competence. Thus, academy coaches can benefit from the tactical impact of this manipulation without exceeding habitual high-speed running demands or impairing players' subjective experience.Publication Open Access Diagnostic value of the derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio for acute appendicitis(Wiley, 2025-03-05) Moreno Alfonso, Julio César; Molina Caballero, Ada; Pérez Martínez, Alberto; Yárnoz Irazábal, María Concepción; Ciencias de la Salud; Osasun Zientziak; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaBackground: The diagnosis of appendicitis in children can present several challenges, leading to an increased risk of complications. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the diagnosticvalue of the derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) as a novel adjunctive diagnostictool for appendicitis. Methods: Diagnostic study of patients with appendicitis and non-surgical abdominal pain(AP) admitted to our hospital between 2020 and 2022. White blood cell count (WBC),neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and dNLR were compared between the two groupsof patients. Results: Overall, 202 patients were enrolled: 101 with appendicitis (69% male, age9.9 years) and 101 with AP (56% male, age 9.4 years). WBC, NLR, and dNLR were higherin patients in the appendicitis group than in those in the AP group (16.47 versus11.18 10 3 cells/mm 3; 9.5 versus 3.3; and 5.2 versus 2.3; P ≤ 0.0001, respectively). Thesensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, area under ROC curve, and cutoff point ofdNLR for the diagnosis of appendicitis were 71%, 74%, 73%, 0.811, and 3.78, respectively. The positive likelihood ratios for WBC, NLR, and dNLR were 1.95, 2.05 and 2.77.Conclusion: dNLR is a novel and noninvasive biomarker with high accuracy for diagnosingappendicitis. Its inclusion as an additional diagnostic tool in clinical practice may aid in determin-ing the need for further studies in cases with ambiguous presentations and a dNLR value ≥3.78.Publication Open Access Asymmetries, lights, and shadows of the legal situation of religious minorities in Spain(MDPI, 2025-09-03) Torres Gutiérrez, Alejandro; Derecho; Zuzenbidea; Institute for Advanced Social Research - ICOMMUNITASThe Spanish Constitution of 1978 recognizes the fundamental right of freedom of conscience and religion, the principle of equality and non-discrimination on religious grounds, and the principle of secularism and neutrality of the state. However, the legislative development of these principles is strongly stratified, and different levels of rights can be distinguished, depending on whether we are speaking about confessions with an agreement (Catholic Church, evangelicals, Jews, and Muslims), those with a mere declaration of well-known roots (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Buddhists, Orthodox, and Bahá’ís), and the rest of the confessions merely registered in the Register of Religious Entities (Hinduism, Taoism, Sikhism, Church of Scientology, etc.). Only the Catholic Church has access to the income tax allocation, and only denominations with an agreement enjoy the main tax benefits, or religious teaching in schools. The declaration of notorious rootedness has very limited effects at present (recognition of marriage and the mere expectation of signing a cooperation agreement with the state, provided there is political will to do so). It is, therefore, necessary to opt for a model of common law, which is more neutral and applies equally to all religious groups. Publication Open Access Characterization of countable and continuous Richter-Peleg multi-utility representations(Elsevier, 2025-08-01) Bosi, Gianni; Induráin Eraso, Esteban; Munárriz Iriarte, Ana; Rodríguez Rincón, Yeray; Estadística, Informática y Matemáticas; Estatistika, Informatika eta Matematika; Institute for Advanced Materials and Mathematics - INAMAT2; Institute for Advanced Research in Business and Economics - INARBEThis paper contributes to the theoretical literature on decision models where agents may encounter challenges in comparing alternatives. We introduce a characterization of countable Richter–Peleg multi-utility representations, both semicontinuous (upper and lower) and continuous, within preorders that may not be total. The proposed theorems provide a comprehensive mathematical framework, complementing previous results of Alcantud et al. and Bosi on countable multi-utility representations. Our characterizations establish necessary and sufficient conditions through topological properties and constructive methods via indicator functions. Furthermore, we introduce a topological framework aligned with the property of strong local non-satiation and provide a novel theorem containing sufficient conditions for the existence of countable upper semi-continuous multi-utility representations of a preorder. The results demonstrate that preference representations can be achieved using countably many functions rather than uncountable families, with implications for computational tractability and the identification of maximal elements in optimization contexts.Publication Open Access Determination of the most influential factors on the quality of resin gears manufacturing(MDPI, 2025-08-12) Echeverria Lazcano, Angel María; Martín Antunes, Miguel Ángel; Villanueva Roldán, Pedro; Fuertes Bonel, Juan Pablo; Marcelino Sádaba, Sara; Ingeniería; Ingeniaritza; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa, PJUPNA2023-11383The manufacture of industrial parts using silicone molds is becoming more frequent due to their versatility, durability, and precision, particularly in the production of complex components. One specific application is the manufacture of gears, which play a fundamental role in high-performance mechanical systems, where geometric accuracy is essential. Gears produced from resins offer several advantages such as efficient tribological performance, load resistance, noise reduction, and non-magnetic properties. The main goal of this paper is to determine the main factors affecting the final quality of resin gears by analyzing two principal gear quality parameters: teeth profile (ffα) and helix deviation (ffβ). This work includes a global analysis of all contributing factors influencing the final quality of gears manufactured. One of the main conclusions obtained is that gear quality depends on a combination of factors, such as mold properties, choice of resin, the manufacturing process, and the quality of the original model. As a result, two regression equations have been developed, relating all influencing factors to the two gear quality parameters (ffα and ffβ). Different response surfaces have been obtained, enabling the definition of the required quality level of the model to achieve reproductions with certain ffα and ffβ values suitable for the intended application conditions.Publication Open Access The role of technology, calculative and collaborative HRM and social trust in driving human resource analytics in European firms(Emerald, 2025-07-16) Bayo Moriones, José Alberto; Erro Garcés, Amaya; Lera López, Fernando; Gestión de Empresas; Enpresen Kudeaketa; Economía; Ekonomia; Institute for Advanced Research in Business and Economics - INARBEPurpose Research on the adoption of human resource analytics (HRA) is dominated mainly by qualitative case studies and by evidence based on the individual perspective using limited samples of workers. This perspective does not consider contextual factors within and outside the firm that could promote or impede the adoption of HRA. This paper tries to overcome this gap by offering empirical evidence on the contextual factors associated with the use of HRA in European countries. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of more than 10,000 European establishments, we focus on the influence of two internal company factors (general-purpose technologies (GPTs) and human resource management (HRM)) and one external factor (social trust in the country) on the incidence of HRA. Findings Results show that HRA is more likely to be used in countries with low generalized trust and in firms where collaborative and calculative HRM practices and technologies, such as robots and general-purpose data analytics, are implemented. Originality/value The research contributes to ongoing debates in the field by providing empirical evidence on the significance of contextual factors related to the adoption of HRA in European companies. Specifically, this is achieved by including variables that have not been examined in previous literature, such as collaborative and calculative HRM practices and GPTs (computers, robots and data analytics technologies) at the company level as well as the impact of social trust (an external factor) at the country level.
