This article analyzes two memorials to Holocaust victims: Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen (Belgium) and the Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe, in Berlin. The main goal is to extract the lessons which are applicable to the Basque Country, with regard to the foundation of institutions dedicated to the memory of the victims of terrorism. Based on the two examples we have just mentioned, we argue that it is possible and necessary to reach basic agreements on the public politics of memory. We hold as well that the role of the historians is very important in dealing with a subject which is susceptible to political instrumentalization.

The fascist repression during the Spanish Civil War severely affected two of most vulnerable social sectors, teachers and women. Purging teachers was carried out by behavior reports and the authority in charge of doing this was the Education Supreme Council. The purging to women was done consciously and deliberately and had a specific ceremonial in which women were expected to be humiliated publicly. Shaving heads, torture and castor oil were the most commonly used methods. Navarra, which led the Uprising from the beginning, shows two different sides given the high number of victims of fascist repression invites us to consider that the Republic settled in Navarre in a larger extent than it’s usually admitted.

In this article we analyze a set of funerary art, quite unknown to date, located in Navarre many cemeteries, namely the Baztan- Bidasoa area. In such an environment there is a substantial body of cemeteries with sculptural decoration due to hand stonemason and sculptor guipuzcoano Thomas Altuna, who worked much Navarra, Basque Country and elsewhere in the environment, in the first third of the 20th century. It is a mason who established his workshop next to the cemetery of San Sebastian Polloe specializing in marble working, but also practiced other stone sculpture. Bring to the catalog of works of the artist a set of 19 pantheons with sculptural adornment which, in any case, denote the hand of an interesting artist.

El momento cultural en la historia social
(Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa, 2015) Ugarte Tellería, Javier
One of the axes of development of historiography displayed in the Institute of Social History Valentín de Foronda’s vicinity has been the one we could call (following Lynn Hunt) new cultural history. Not so much of a disruptive but the prolongation of the classic story across the social history as detected Lawrence Stone (1979). Echoing is made that recent thinking emphasizes the inter-subjectivity the communicative reason and structures of language and culture. Never giving up empiricism principles.

Through this work we want to present a member of 17th century rural nobility. His father’s family had, in previous generations since the Middle Ages, occupied regimentary positions in Los Arcos, and his mother’s family were part of a distinguished social status in the town of Azagra in the south of Navarre. He was the only child of his father’s first marriage and as an adult he inherited a house, land, livestock and bodegas, all with entailed estate. His father’s good management of the inheritance is clear. Of particular note are the private chapel in the parish cloisters of Los Arcos and an oratory in his ancestral house. During his military training in the Order of Saint James, he served under Luis Méndez de Haro y Guzmán, the third Count-Duke de Olivares.

On the occasion of his retirement from the Complutense University of Madrid and his promotion to the status of Emeritus Professor thereof, this article reviews the professional life of Juan Pablo Fusi Aizpurúa and stresses his relevance for historiography and, more generally, for the Spanish and Basque public life. The review starts from the years at the University of Oxford as a post-graduated Ph D student, and proceed to analyze the «critical revisionism» of his historiography derived from British empiricism (Lewis B. Namier, Trevor-Roper...) as Isaiah Berlin explained it. Finally the article analyzes Fusi’s historiographical production and his public institutional biography and academic responsibilities, according to an askesis and spirit of service that resembled that of the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset.
