La judería de Puente la Reina (c. 1080-1410)

Abstract

En todas las obras de síntesis, tenidas como clásicas, las menciones a la existencia de esta judería y a su destacado papel en la ruta de peregrinación a Compostela son constantes, pero apenas sobrepasan las dos líneas el espacio al que a ella se dedica. Más que aportaciones probadas se trataba de meras hipótesis, fundadas quizás en la existencia de documentos hebreos relativos a esta comunidad en el famoso cajón 192 del AGN. Nuestro propósito es bien modesto: aportar nuevos datos para tratar de lograr una aproximación a la historia de los judíos instalados en esta singular etapa del Camino de Santiago, desde su posible llegada, junto a emigrados francos, en el último tercio del siglo XI hasta el primer decenio del siglo XV , cuando se pierde su rastro como prestamistas. Se ha puesto especial relieve en registrar la capacidad de acogida ante la emigración de judíos de Ultrapuertos, expulsados de Francia y del ducado de Aquitania. Sin embargo, nuestra visión es bastante parcial, derivada sobre todo de la naturaleza fiscal de las fuentes y de la escasez de los testimonios conservados: cuentas fragmentarias del preboste de la villa y de los escuálidos cinco registros del sello, gestionados por Martín de Palmas (1352-1388) y de Miguel López en los años iniciales del “cuatrocientos”. Con todas las limitaciones que el caso requiere, se ha podido elaborar una nómina de judíos –casi medio centenar– que a lo largo de este tiempo figuraron de alguna manera como moradores de las dependencias ocupadas por los seguidores de la ley de Moisés en los aledaños del Puente del Arga.

There are constant references to the existence of this Jewish quarter and its significant role on the route of pilgrimage to Compostela in all the summarised works taken to be classics, but they barely take up more than two lines. More than proven contributions, they consisted of mere hypotheses, founded perhaps on the existence of Hebrew documents relative to this community in the now-famous box 192 in the General Archive of Navarra. Our aim is extremely modest: to provide new information in an attempt at outlining the history of the Jews residing on this unique stage of the Pilgrims’ Road to Santiago, from their possible arrival alongside Frankish immigrants in the last third of the XI century to the first decade of the XV century, when we lose track of them as moneylenders. Special importance has been given to recording the capacity to admit Jewish immigrants from Ultrapuertos, who had been expelled from France and the Duchy of Aquitaine. Our vision, however, is rather partial given the fiscal nature of the sources and the scarcity of testimonies conserved: fragments of accounts belonging to the town provost and from the five meagre stamp registers, kept by Martín de Palmas (1352-1388) and de Miguel López at the beginning of the 1400’s. With all the limitations which the case requires, it has been possible to draft a list of Jews –almost fifty- who figured in some way at this time as residents of the dwellings occupied by followers of the law of Moses in the Arga Bridge area.
