Large-scale crop monitoring is extremely useful to address problems such as climate change or pest
control. However, this is a highly costly task and it is not feasible to do it manually or with traditional
methods. An example of this is the counting of old olive trees (older than 60 years) that the government
of Navarra wishes to carry out for the allocation of subsidies.
Therefore, the aim of this work is to address this specific problem from a technological perspective
in which, through the use of computation and the latest artificial intelligence techniques, large olive
groves can be monitored using hyper-temporal aerial images and determine which of the olive trees
existing in 2020 are old, which are replanted and which are new.
To achieve this goal, a manual labelling of certain olive groves has been carried out to create a dataset
with which to train a convolutional neural network capable of segmenting and detecting the olive trees in
the aerial images. Then, a time series was constructed for each olive tree with the segmentation obtained
by the network and using a deterministic algorithm, each time series was classified as “new”, “old” or
“replanted”. [--]
