El asesinato del comandante José Rodríguez-Medel: nuevos datos

Abstract

José Rodríguez-Medel Briones, comandante de la Guardia Civil, murió en Pamplona el 18 de julio de 1936 debido a su negativa a unirse al alzamiento militar contra la República. A lo largo de los años, se han ofrecido versiones contradictorias sobre las circunstancias en que se produjo su muerte, ninguna concluyente, unas interesadas en justificar el crimen, otras incompletas por haber estado desaparecidos durante mucho tiempo los documentos de la investigación judicial. El hallazgo casual de las diligencias judiciales, extraviadas durante décadas en los archivos militares, y sobre todo el informe de la autopsia, permite reconstruir los hechos, descartar determinadas tesis (que fue un accidente, que hubo un tiroteo iniciado por el propio Rodríguez-Medel, que murió por disparos de uno solo de sus subordinados) y concluir que fue un asesinato por la espalda orquestado por los guardias sublevados.

José Rodríguez-Medel Briones, major of the Spanish Guardia Civil, died in Pamplona on 18 July 1936 due to his refusal to join the military uprising against the Republic. There have been different theories over the years about the circumstances of his death, although none of them were academically satisfying: some only focused on justifying the crime, and some others incomplete because of the longlost documents of the judicial investigation. The chance finding after several decades of those dossiers (especially the report on the autopsy) allows the investigators to reformulate the facts and to discard some hypotheses (such as the possibility of an accident or a shooting started by either Rodríguez-Medel himself or one of his subordinates). They eventually concluded that it was a murder planned by the military who had supported the coup d’etat.
