Chronic water shortages in Spain, aggravated by frequent droughts due to climate change, have
caused significant economic problems, with a record payment of 406.2 million euros by
Agroseguro to affected farmers. Knowing the date on which a plot of land is harvested for which
the compensatory payment for production reduction due to drought is requested is important for
entities such as Agroseguro.
This paper evaluates the potential of parameters derived from time series of vegetation indices,
obtained from Sentinel-2 images, to estimate the date of cereal harvest at the cadastral plot level.
The study was focused on cereal plots in the middle zone of Navarra and the Google Earth Engine
platform was used to generate the time series of vegetation indices, which constituted the starting
information for this work.
Once the time series were processed, three methods were evaluated to estimate the phenological
metric "end of season", being this the end of the period in which there is photosynthetic activity
in the cereal and the beginning of the drying period. From this, the harvest date would be
estimated, finding that the amplitude method was the most appropriate, although the regression
models showed low coefficients of determination. Among the vegetation indices, the one that
provided the best results was the Near-Infrared Reflectance of Vegetation (NIRv), with the
Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) performing somewhat better in the case of plots that were
harvested earlier.
The results of this work can be considered an interesting starting point for harvest date prediction,
being necessary to extend the research, including the consideration of data from other satellites
of higher temporal resolution, which allow a more detailed monitoring of the crop during the
weeks before and after senescence to identify specific changes in vegetation indices related to
harvest. [--]
