Legumes are one of the most widely cultivated plants by humans, next to cereals, and are
considered a valuable source of protein for food. Among the most widely grown and
consumed grain legumes in tropical regions are the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris
L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.). Among the abiotic factors that limit their growth and
yield is salinity. In the present investigation, the effect of salt stress on germination, initial
growth and seed quality of these legumes was evaluated. The physical quality of seeds in
the evaluated cultivars showed a reduction in biomass when harvested under salinity,
although without significant changes in their dimensions (length, width and thickness).
The relative proportion of cotyledon weight was significantly affected in soybean and the
testa was more than 8% higher in seeds of both species when subjected to abiotic stress.
It was also observed that salinity reduced water uptake by seeds and their germination
percentage, as well as embryo biomass. However, the effect of salinity during the initial
growth phase caused greater sensitivity in common bean than in soybean. These results
suggest a differentiated physiological response between both species. [--]
