Para aquellas aplicaciones en las que se considera emplear energía térmica proveniente del sol u otras fuentes, es posible emplear materiales como almacenadores de energía térmica. Los materiales con cambio de fase (PCMs) son capaces de almacenar calor mediante el calor latente que se da en un cambio de fase. La energía aportada a un material para que se dé un cambio de fase se denomina entalpía de cambio de fase; esta energía aportada al material para el cambio de fase puede ser recuperada cuando el cambio de fase se revierte (el material vuelve al estado físico previo al aporte energético). Por lo tanto, los PCM pueden ser empleados para regular el contraste térmico en un rango de temperaturas establecido como, por ejemplo, en paredes de edificios o en ropa térmica donde se presenten ciclos de calentamientoenfriamiento. Uno de los problemas que presentan estos materiales es el cambio de forma y volumen que sufren al pasar de una fase a otra, lo que requiere que sean encapsulados para la mayoría de sus aplicaciones. Como solución a este problema se propone la encapsulación de PCMs en fibras coaxiales mediante la técnica de electrospinning. El material empleado como PCM en el núcleo de las fibras serán parafinas con puntos de fusión cercanos a la temperatura ambiente y el material empleado como matriz será poliuretano, reciclado a partir de crotales. Las fibras serán caracterizadas por FTIR, TGA, SEM y DSC.
