Multi-level strategy to promote equity through empowerment and participation
(Ubiquity Press, 2019-08-09) Giné March, Anna; Bacigalupe de la Hera, Amaia; Morteruel Arizcuren, Maite; Martín Roncero, Unai; Ciencias de la Salud; Osasun Zientziak
Health inequities are recognised as one of the core challenges faced affecting population health worldwide. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their focus on leaving no one behind have put equity at the centre of efforts to pursue development, wellbeing and prosperity. However, greater understanding of what is working to reduce health inequities is needed to move the implementation of health-related rights in complex systems.

The emergence of Covid-19 pandemic has drawn large attention to vulnerable people affected by major diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 55 million people worldwide suffer from dementia. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the predominant type of dementia, accounting for 60-70% of cases [1]. A long-standing challenge is to attain early diagnosis of AD hallmarks (tau protein, ¿P; amyloid beta, A¿) by detecting them in biological fluids, thus avoiding the labor of specialized hospital personnel and the high cost of imaging examinations. Different biological fluids are being used to detect AD biomarkers, such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), serum, blood-plasma [2]. Biomarker level in CSF has been shown to increase in the very early stages of the disease where its elevated value makes higher the risk of a quicker development of AD dementia. Traditional methods for biomarker detection are mostly based on ELISA or mass spectrometry, which possess well-known disadvantages in comparison with electrochemical or optical approaches [3,4].

Peaking for the world para athletics championships: case study of a world champion female paralympic shot putter
(Universidad de Alicante, 2020) Garcia-Carrillo, Exal; Ramírez Campillo, Rodrigo; Ciencias de la Salud; Osasun Zientziak
Tapering is used to maximize performance and reduce fatigue levels before athletic competitions. However, scientific evidence regarding Paralympic athletes is scarce. Moreover, no study has assessed the effects of tapering practices on performance in a world champion female Paralympic shot putter (FPSP). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of a short tapering period on the performance of an elite FPSP. A world champion FPSP (sport class F54; age 42.2 y; body mass 74 kg; height 1.67 m) was monitored during both overload (2 weeks) and tapering (2 weeks; training volume and intensity decreased) blocks previous to Dubai 2019 World Para Athletics Championships. The internal training load (ITL) (through session rating of perceived exertion) and self-reported wellbeing (using a questionnaire) were assessed daily. Shot put performance was assessed at the beginning and after tapering. The ITL decreased 37.9% with tapering, shot put performance increased 7.6%, there were no differences between weekly wellness scores. No significant correlations were found between ITL and wellbeing indicators. It was concluded that two weeks of tapering induced a rather large improvement in shot put performance. Surprisingly, self-reported wellbeing did not improve with taper as expected.

The Navarra 1000 Genomes Project (NAGEN 1000): benefits for predictive, preventive and personalized medicine
(Springer, 2020) Pasalodos Sánchez, Sara; Salgado Garrido, Josefa; Miranda, María; Maíllo Ruiz de Infante, Alberto; Matalonga, L.; Beltrán, Sergi; Carmona, R.; Pérez-Florido, Javier; Etayo, G.; Lasheras, G.; Bernad, T.; Gómez-Cabrero, David; Ángel-González, L.; Brennan, P.; Gut, I.; Dopazo, Joaquín; Pinillos, I.; Lasa Uzcudun, Íñigo; Alonso Sánchez, Ángel Miguel; Ciencias de la Salud; Osasun Zientziak; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako Gobernua
In the past few years, extraordinary developments in the field of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, such as whole genome sequencing (WGS), have made it possible for clinicians to have access to a huge amount of biological information which could potentially explain complex genetic diagnoses, genetic predisposition to severe diseases, reproductive risks and inappropriate responses to certain medications. These advances herald a new era of predictive preventive personalized medicine (PPPM), although incorporation into clinical practice has proved to be challenging [1]. “NAGEN 1000” is a Spanish regional pilot study to implement recent advances of cutting edge genomic research technology into real clinical practice.

Healthcare professionals face the immanence of death embedded in scientific progress and the digital revolution
(2018) García-Orellán, Rosa; Ciencias de la Salud; Osasun Zientziak
Healthcare professionals como face to face with death as part of their daily routine. This happens in emergencies; but it also airses as life is ending, when palliative care is the only tratment thar remains available for a human being. We need to ask how to approach the palliative care of individuals who live in an interconnected world where they repeatedely encounter the fiction of scientific advences that will open the way to immortality.
