    In this paper, we present an original and optimal multimode horn antenna design to excite the fundamental Gaussian beam from an overmoded waveguide. In particular, we focus the study in overmoded circular corrugated waveguide. The main idea to design this multimode horn antenna, is to increase the waveguide radius as the desired gaussian mode expands. This principle has also been applied to smooth circular waveguides to excite higher order Gaussian beams from TE0n modes. The horn antenna design considered here, improves the gaussian conversion efficiency, the crosspolarisation and the sidelobes level of some good mixture ( aprox. 85% of TE11 and 15% of TM11 ).

    Experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized metasurface antenna

    The experimental validation of a Ku-band dual circularly polarized (CP) broadside-beam metasurface (MTS) antenna is presented. A radially modulated anisotropic single layer MTS has been synthesised employing sub-wavelength elliptical slotted metallic patches printed on top of a thin Arlon grounded substrate. In the structure, two decoupled phasematched transverse magnetic and transverse electric surface waves (SWs) are excited, which interact with the modulated surface leading to a CP broadside radiation. Two different orthomode transducers have been designed to excite the SWs with orthogonal polarization and equal amplitude. The first feeding system is composed of a metallic stepped septum inside an airfilled square waveguide. A conical section is included to match the output port of the square waveguide with the terminal, dielectric filled circular waveguide. The second feed is much more compact and efficient and it is composed of a circular waveguide completely filled by a dielectric. Depending on the input port excited on the feeds, two TE11 modes are excited with ±90° phase shift, which determine the right-hand or left-hand sense of the broadside beam generated by the MTS. Manufacturing details of the MTS and excitations are given and the measurements are compared with the simulation results. Finally, conclusions are drawn.

    Comparación entre antenas cónicas corrugadas y antenas gaussianas corrugadas

    In this paper, a study of two equal size corrugated horn antennas; a conical and a gaussian profiled horn antenna (GPHA) has been developed. It will be demonstrated that GPHA´s provide lower sidelobes and wider bandwidths, while conical corrugated horn antennas offer higher directivities for the same aperture. Both type of antennas provide low crosspolar levels.

    Ultra-wide band corrugated gaussian profiled horn antenna design

    A corrugated horn antenna design with more than 40% bandwidth is proposed in this paper. The measured radiated field patterns have a good agreement with the simulated ones. This antenna can be used in applications that require extremely wide bandwidth with low sidelobes and low crosspolar levels, with not very strong return loss requirements.

    Silicon integrated subharmonic mixer on a photonic-crystal platform

    This paper presents a planar silicon integrated subharmonic mixer on top of a photonic-crystal platform. The local oscillator (LO) power is injected through a 2D photoniccrystal (PC) slab to a resonant cavity that effectively couples the signal to a planar bow-tie antenna. The same antenna, which is printed on the top of the PC cavity, contains an antiparallel Schottky diode pair which performs the down-conversion. The proposed design is a simple, easy to integrate, low cost, low profile device. Moreover, the described fabrication process is compatible with active components integration. The performance of the design has been experimentally demonstrated showing good agreement with the simulation and is comparable with the stateof-the-art of planar mixers. The work presented here is based on concepts and technologies from electronics and photonics domains and may be a good starting point for the creation of new devices, allowing the integration and upgrading of existing techniques from both worlds.

    Advanced feeds for mm-wave antenna systems

    Millimeter-wave antenna systems have traditionally required high performance feeds in order to fulfill its stringent requirements. Therefore, this goal has been achieved by corrugated horns. However, in the last years new applications mainly in the communication systems have driven the use of other types of antenna feed with slightly reduced performance but simpler manufacturing at mm-wave and submm-wave frequencies with improvements in cost reduction. These advanced profiles are usually based in smooth waveguide advanced profiles. Besides, the chapter describes different feed configurations based on metamaterial structures and several examples of metamaterial based or inspired antennas are considered. Then, this chapter covers the different alternatives currently used for mm-wave antenna feed: corrugated horns, spline horns, and metamaterial horns. At the end of each section, it includes some research successful results.

    Measurements of a new gaussian profile corrugated horn antenna for millimeter wave applications

    The measurements results of a new design of corrugated horn antennas [1, 2, 3] following the gaussian expansion are presented in this paper. The performance of two corrugated horn antennas of this kind was verified in the ESTEC Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) [4]. Very high agreement between measured and predicted results is found.

    Generación del modo HE11 a partir de una guía circular lisa monomodo

    In this paper, we present an original taper design to obtain the HE11 corrugated circular waveguide mode exciting with a pure TE11 monomode smooth circular waveguide mode. The proposed corrugated taper has a longitudinal section composed of two hyperbolic profiles in series, one concave and the other convex united at a point, such that the derivative is continuous. Superimposed there is an additional tapering of the corrugation depth that goes from l/2 at taper input to l/4 within the first hyperbola. This original synthesis procedure has been successfully tested by computational simulation. The calculation method has been validated by experimental results of other authors.

    The present paper deals with the design of modern corrugated horn antennas for extremely low sidelobe level with the use of the well known corrugated Gaussian Profiled Horn Antenna (corrugated GPHA’s) to improve the radiation pattern features and reduce the antenna size. Basic design rules will be given to start with an appropriate profile which can be quickly used as input profile for modern optimization codes to improve antenna characteristics, i.e. its size.

    Generation of the HE11 mode in rectangular waveguide using gaussian techniques

    A new and efficient design of a rectangular corrugated waveguide mode converter, from TE10 mode in a smooth rectangular monomode waveguide to HE11 mode in a corrugated rectangular waveguide, is proposed. The main idea is the application of Gaussian design techniques, described in the given references, previously applied in circular waveguides. By using these techniques compact and very efficient components are obtained. The obtained far field pattern is rather good as illuminator of square or rectangular parabolic reflectors, with very low sidelobes and crosspolarisation levels, avoiding the use of a rectangular to circular waveguide converter. Simulations by using the HP’s Finite Element code HFSS shown very promising results.
