    La "brecha digital": un reto para el desarrollo de la sociedad del conocimiento

    El desarrollo de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) dentro de la economía del conocimiento está generando importantes transformaciones en la economía actual y nuevas expectativas de desarrollo. Sin embargo, la oportunidad que las TIC ofrecen al crecimiento económico no parece materializarse para los países menos desarrollados, generando lo que se ha denominado brecha digital. El presente artículo trata de cuantificar el fenómeno en base a una clasificación de indicadores, determinando posibles variables explicativas. A partir de una serie de iniciativas internacionales (DOT Force, eEuropa, ONU…), el artículo finaliza con una serie de medidas a desarrollar para eliminar la brecha digital y para constituir una sociedad del conocimiento a nivel mundial.     Do educational inequalities affect Internet use? An analysis for developed and developing countries

    This study investigates whether the existence of educational inequalities at the country level affects Internet use. Additionally, we explore the extent to which these impacts depend on countries' economic development levels. We use a logit model and data set of 69 high- and middle-income countries for the period 2005-2015. We find a negative relationship between Internet use and education inequality for the whole sample. The results confirm that, in addition to the level of education and other socioeconomic variables, the distribution of formal education among citizens within a country is also important to explain Internet use. We also obtain that this distribution affects Internet use to a higher extent in middle-income economies in comparison with high-income ones. Unlike the positive influence of educational levels obtained in the academic literature, the existence of within-country educational disparities negatively influences Internet use. This study demonstrates the influence of countries' educational structure in relative terms in explaining Internet use.

    Determinants of Internet use in Spain

    This paper analyzes the impact of a variety of socioeconomic, demographic and regional factors to explain Internet use and the frequency of use by individuals in Spain. We have employed binomial and ordered probit models with a Heckman´s two-stage estimation procedure. This allows us to distinguish between different variables and explain both use and the intensity of use, respectively. Internet use is mainly associated with education, age, occupation, employment in service sector, nationality, urban areas and regional GDP per capita. In contrast, frequency of Internet usage is positively related to broadband connection, education, the ways through which Internet skills are acquired, gender, and population size. Knowledge of differences in the determinants of Internet use and its extent of use may help to specify the most suitable policies for each case your abstract
