A design technique to include multiple and fully-controlled transmission zeros (TZs) in the frequency response of rectangular waveguide commensurate-line stepped-impedance filters is presented in this letter. These bandpass filters (BPFs) are known for having reduced sensitivities against manufacturing inaccuracies and are composed of multiple waveguide sections. In order to improve their selectivity, 3λg/4 and λg/4-stubs are included to create multiple TZs around the passband. The proposed technique allows us to add multiple stubs in a single section and, therefore, only minor adjustments in the affected part of the filter are required, which simplifies the overall design process. The technique has been verified with a design example with four TZs (two on each side) near the passband.

Multipactor breakdown analysis of Ku-band meandered low-pass filter

In this work, a very compact rectangular waveguide low-pass filter with meandered topology based on commensurate lines for Ku-band satellite applications is analysed for high-power handling capabilities. The device consists of rectangular waveguide sections properly cascaded to form a meandered topology to obtain the desired value of the local reflection coefficients. which are essential to achieve the target frequency response and also to keep large mechanical gaps. Hence, this technique allows us not only to design a filter with compact size but a filter geometry which is suitable for high power applications. In the paper, the low-pass filter based on commensurate lines is first designed by cascading E-plane mitered bends (±90° EMBs) in CST Microwave Studio (MWS) and then the values of the electromagnetic fields at the passband frequencies are exported to Spark3D to perform a multipactor analysis. The critical areas inside the device where the multipactor discharge occurs will also be identified in the high-power analysis. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7343236

Microwave and millimeter-wave components aiming for an easy fabrication
(2023) Sami, Abdul; Gómez Laso, Miguel Ángel; Arregui Padilla, Iván; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektriko eta Elektronikoaren eta Komunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
This Thesis is intended to develop various novel design techniques to design low-pass and band-pass waveguide filters based on stepped-impedance commensurate lines for various satellite applications. The main objectives of the thesis are to design waveguide filters which are more robust against fabrication errors, with high electrical performance, reduced size and capable of high-power operations. Keeping in mind the objectives of the thesis, the inherent low-pass response of the commensurate line waveguide sections is utilized to design a low-pass filter with meandered topology employing E-plane mitered bends with constant widths to achieve a very compact design for Ku-band but with large mechanical gaps to make the filter design capable for high power operations. The high-power handling capabilities are demonstrated with SPARK3D at various frequencies between 10.7 GHz to 11.7 GHz in the passband in the pass-band. The estimated minimum input threshold power is 20 kW at the highest frequency of the passband. Also, the critical areas inside the filter structures are also identified which are considered to be more prone to multipactor discharge to identify the key design parameters for enhancing the power handling capabilities.

A novel Enterococcus-based nanofertilizer promotes seedling growth and vigor in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Excessive use of chemical fertilizers poses significant environmental and health concerns. Microbial-based biofertilizers are increasingly being promoted as safe alternatives. However, they have limitations such as gaining farmers¿ trust, the need for technical expertise, and the variable performance of microbes in the field. The development of nanobiofertilizers as agro-stimulants and agro-protective agents for climate-smart and sustainable agriculture could overcome these limitations. In the present study, auxin-producing Enterococcus sp. SR9, based on its plant growth-promoting traits, was selected for the microbe-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These microbial-nanoparticles SR9AgNPs were characterized using UV/Vis spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, and a size analyzer. To test the efficacy of SR9AgNPs compared to treatment with the SR9 isolate alone, the germination rates of cucumber (Cucumis sativus), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds were analyzed. The data revealed that seeds simultaneously treated with SR9AgNPs and SR9 showed better germination rates than untreated control plants. In the case of vigor, wheat showed the most positive response to the nanoparticle treatment, with a higher vigor index than the other crops analyzed. The toxicity assessment of SR9AgNPs demonstrated no apparent toxicity at a concentration of 100 ppm, resulting in the highest germination and biomass gain in wheat seedlings. This work represents the first step in the characterization of microbial-assisted SR9AgNPs and encourages future studies to extend these conclusions to other relevant crops under field conditions.

Integración de múltiples stubs en filtros de saltos de impedancias de alta selectividad
(URSI, 2023) Gómez Laso, Miguel Ángel; Sami, Abdul; Lopetegui Beregaña, José María; Martín Iglesias, Petronilo; Álvarez Botero, Germán Andrés; Pons Abenza, Alejandro; Arregui Padilla, Iván; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
Rectangular waveguide commensurate-line stepped-impedance bandpass filters have been shown to have an increased fabrication robustness using conventional CNC milling. In this paper, their frequency response is improved by adding multiple transmission zeros at fully-controlled positions around the passband. The technique starts with the design of the filter without transmission zeros and only requires that one of the filter sections is slightly redesigned, while the rest keep unaltered, when lambda_g/¿¿ and 3*lambda_g/¿¿ stubs are included in the section to increase the overall filter selectivity around the passband. The design example is a 7th-order Chebyshev bandpass filter in Ku-band.

Robust tolerance design of bandpass filter with improved frequency response for Q-band satellite applications
(IEEE, 2021) Sami, Abdul; Teberio Berdún, Fernando; Miranda Santafé, Luis; Arnedo Gil, Israel; Martín Iglesias, Petronilo; Benito Pertusa, David; Lopetegui Beregaña, José María; Gómez Laso, Miguel Ángel; Arregui Padilla, Iván; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
A rectangular waveguide bandpass filter for Q-band with simple fabrication is proposed in this letter. The design is based on the use of the first passband replica of commensurate-line stepped-impedance structures and achieves the suppression of their inherent low-pass response. In order to do it, the filter is implemented by rectangular waveguide sections with different widths and heights that can be analytically calculated. The technique is validated by a 9th order Chebyshev filter with passband between 40 and 43 GHz and fabrication yield equal to 84 % for a manufacturing error of ± 20 μm. The measured results of the prototype fabricated with CNC milling are in good agreement with the simulated ones.
