(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2023) Navajas Hernández, David; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
Radiative thermal engineering with subwavelength metallic bodies is a key element for heat and energy management applications, communication and sensing. Here, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate metallic thermal emitters with narrowband but extremely stable emission spectra, whose resonant frequency does not shift with changes on the nanofilm thickness, the angle of observation and/or polarization. Our devices are based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) substrates acting as material-based high-impedance substrates. They do not require from complex nanofabrication processes, thus being compatible with large-area and low-cost applications.

Modified Soret lenses for dual band integrated detectors at submillimetre and millimetre wavelengths
(IEEE, 2020) Torres García, Alicia E.; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
This paper presents a planar silicon integrated subharmonic mixer on top of a photonic-crystal platform. The local oscillator (LO) power is injected through a 2D photonic crystal (PC) slab to a resonant cavity that effectively couples the signal to a planar bow-tie antenna. The same antenna, which is printed on the top of the PC cavity, contains an antiparallel Schottky diode pair which performs the down-conversion. The proposed design is a simple, easy to integrate, low cost, low profile device. Moreover, the described fabrication process is compatible with active components integration. The performance of the design has been experimentally demonstrated showing good agreement with the simulation and is comparable with the state of-the-art of planar mixers. The work presented here is based on concepts and technologies from electronics and photonics domains and may be a good starting point for the creation of new devices, allowing the integration and upgrading of existing techniques from both worlds.

(IEEE, 2021) Chocarro Álvarez, Javier; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
In this paper, the use of a metasurface to improve the radiation properties of a Substrate Integrated Waveguide based slotted antenna is proposed. The design process of a metasurface covered 8 element slot antenna array following a Chebyshev distribution is presented and its performance is compared with that of a conventional one. The results demonstrate the improvement in the radiation performance that can be achieved, without affecting the bandwidth.

A simplified design inline microstrip-to-waveguide transition
(MDPI, 2018) Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
A simplified design of an inline transition between microstrip and rectangular waveguide is presented in this paper. The transition makes use of a dielectric filled rectangular waveguide (DFRW) as an intermediate step, which simplifies manufacturing and allows for an analytical design. The behavior of the transition has been experimentally validated in the W-band by means of a back-to-back configuration. Good performance has been achieved: a return loss greaterthan 10 dB and mean insertion loss lower than 1 dB.

Twin lossy mode resonance on a single D-shaped optical fiber
(Optica, 2021) Imas González, José Javier; Ruiz Zamarreño, Carlos; Del Villar, Ignacio; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
This letter presents the fabrication of dual lossy mode resonance (LMR) refractometers based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) and tin oxide (SnO2) thin films deposited on a single side-polished D-shaped optical fiber. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, two independent LMRs are obtained in the same D-shaped optical fiber, by using a step-shaped nanostructure consisting of a first section of TiO2 with a thickness of 120 nm and a second section with a thickness of 140 nm (120 nm of TiO2 and 20 nm of SnO2). Each section is responsible for generating a first-order LMR with TM-polarized light (LMRTM). TiO2 is deposited by atomic layer deposition and SnO2 by electron-beam deposition. The theoretical results show that the depth of each of the resonances of the dual LMR depends on the length of the corresponding section. Two experimental devices were fabricated with sections of different lengths, and their sensitivities were studied, achieving values ∼ 4000 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) with a maximum of 4506 nm/RIU for values of the SRI between 1.3327 and 1.3485.

300 GHz optoelectronic transmitter combining integrated photonics and electronic multipliers for wireless communication
(MDPI, 2019) Ali, Muhsin; Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Guzmán Martínez, Robinson Cruzoe; Lo, Mu Chieh; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Gonzalo García, Ramón; García Muñoz, Luis Enrique; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
THz communications systems at carrier frequencies above 200 GHz are the key to enable next-generation mobile communication networks with 100 Gbit/s wireless data rates. One of the key questions is, which carrier frequency generation technique will be the most suitable. This is currently addressed by two separate approaches, electronics-based and photonics-based. We present in this paper a truly microwave photonic approach that benefits from the main key features of each, bandwidth, tunability, stability and fiber compatibility from photonics and power handling capability from the electronics. It is based on a Photonic Local Oscillator (PLO), generating a 100 GHz frequency, fed into an electronic frequency multiplier. A high speed uni-travelling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) provides the 100 GHz PLO for Schottky tripler diodes, generating 300 GHz signal. To feed the UTC-PD, we present a photonic integrated mode locked laser source. According to the simulations and measurements, the developed transmitter can produce a maximum of 12 μWof THz power at 280 GHz.

Response of complementary split ring resonators in composite stratified substrate integrated waveguide
(American Institute of Physics, 2017) Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Jarauta Ayensa, Eduardo; Falcone Lanas, Francisco; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica
In this work, the behavior of a Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) operating within the quasi-static resonance regime and embedded in a composite stratified Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) with two different dielectric layers is analyzed. In these conditions, the propagating modes within the SIW combined with the imposed non-symmetrical structure lead to the excitation of the CSRR elements inside the SIW at difference with conventional excitation. Several cases of CSRR loaded SIW are proposed, and their electromagnetic field components as well as their frequency response are analyzed, providing insight into the CSRR resonance excitation. A test prototype has been designed, fabricated, and measured, showing a good agreement with simulation results and providing a new alternative for the implementation of compact frequency selective devices compatible with planar technology and without undesired radiation loss.

A Chebyshev transformer-based microstri-to-groove-gap-waveguide inline transition for MMIC packaging
(IEEE, 2019) Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Torres García, Alicia E.; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
The gap waveguide technology has become an alternative to millimeter- and submillimeter-wave electronic circuit packaging thanks to the loss reduction associated with its use. In this paper, a simplified design of an inline transition between a microstrip and a groove gap waveguide (GGW) operating at the W-band is presented. The transition consists of a tapered microstrip line and a Chebyshev adapter that couple the quasi-TEM mode of the microstrip line to the so-called vertical mode of the GGW. The simplicity of this design makes this transition appropriate for monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) packaging at millimeter frequencies and above. The simulation results have been experimentally validated in the W-band. A good performance has been achieved, resulting in a return loss better than 10 dB and a mean insertion loss lower than 2 dB.

Silicon carbide as a material-based high-impedance surface for enhanced absorption within ultra-thin metallic films
(Optical Society of America, 2020) Pérez Escudero, José Manuel; Buldain, Iban; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Goicoechea Fernández, Javier; Liberal Olleta, Íñigo; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
The absorption of infrared radiation within ultra-thin metallic films is technologically relevant for different thermal engineering applications and optoelectronic devices, as well as for fundamental research on sub-nanometer and atomically-thin materials. However, the maximal attainable absorption within an ultra-thin metallic film is intrinsically limited by both its geometry and material properties. Here, we demonstrate that material-based high-impedance surfaces enhance the absorptivity of the films, potentially leading to perfect absorption for optimal resistive layers, and a fourfold enhancement for films at deep nanometer scales. Moreover, material-based high-impedance surfaces do not suffer from spatial dispersion and the geometrical restrictions of their metamaterial counterparts. We provide a proof-of-concept experimental demonstration by using titanium nanofilms on top of a silicon carbide substrate.
