    Spatio-temporal image fusion aims to increase the frequency and resolution of multispectral satellite sensor images in a cost-effective manner. However, practical constraints on input data requirements and computational cost prevent a wider adoption of these methods in real case-studies. We propose an ensemble of strategies to eliminate the need for cloud-free matching pairs of satellite sensor images. The new methodology called Unpaired Spatio-Temporal Fusion of Image Patches (USTFIP) is tested in situations where classical requirements are progressively difficult to meet. Overall, the study shows that USTFIP reduces the root mean square error by 2-to-13% relative to the state-of-the-art Fit-FC fusion method, due to an efficient use of the available information. Implementation of USTFIP through parallel computing saves up to 40% of the computational time required for Fit-FC.

    Locally adaptive change-point detection (LACPD) with applications to environmental changes

    We propose an adaptive-sliding-window approach (LACPD) for the problem of change-point detection in a set of time-ordered observations. The proposed method is combined with sub-sampling techniques to compensate for the lack of enough data near the time series’ tails. Through a simulation study, we analyse its behaviour in the presence of an early/middle/late change-point in the mean, and compare its performance with some of the frequently used and recently developed change-point detection methods in terms of power, type I error probability, area under the ROC curves (AUC), absolute bias, variance, and root-mean-square error (RMSE). We conclude that LACPD outperforms other methods by maintaining a low type I error probability. Unlike some other methods, the performance of LACPD does not depend on the time index of change-points, and it generally has lower bias than other alternative methods. Moreover, in terms of variance and RMSE, it outperforms other methods when change-points are close to the time series’ tails, whereas it shows a similar (sometimes slightly poorer) performance as other methods when change-points are close to the middle of time series. Finally, we apply our proposal to two sets of real data: the well-known example of annual flow of the Nile river in Awsan, Egypt, from 1871 to 1970, and a novel remote sensing data application consisting of a 34-year time-series of satellite images of the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index in Wadi As-Sirham valley, Saudi Arabia, from 1986 to 2019. We conclude that LACPD shows a good performance in detecting the presence of a change as well as the time and magnitude of change in real conditions.

    Using RGISTools to estimate water levels in reservoirs and lakes

    The combination of freely accessible satellite imagery from multiple programs improves the spatio-temporal coverage of remote sensing data, but it exhibits barriers regarding the variety of web services, file formats, and data standards. Ris an open-source software environment with state-of-the-art statistical packages for the analysis of optical imagery. However, it lacks the tools for providing unified access to multi-program archives to customize and process the time series of images. This manuscript introduces RGISTools, a new software that solves these issues, and provides a working example on water mapping, which is a socially and environmentally relevant research field. The case study uses a digital elevation model and a rarely assessed combination of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 imagery to determine the water level of a reservoir in Northern Spain. The case study demonstrates how to acquire and process time series of surface reflectance data in an efficient manner. Our method achieves reasonably accurate results, with a root mean squared error of 0.90 m. Future improvements of the package involve the expansion of the workflow to cover the processing of radar images. This should counteract the limitation of the cloud coverage with multi-spectral images.

    Ecosystem services in emergy terms: Danish energy crops

    Currently, benefits generated by natural environments, such as carbon sequestration or water retention and others, are measured in economic terms based on “willingness to pay” of society (using the TEV or Total Economic Valuation). Thanks to these measurements, decisions can be made about items related to natural ecosystems in the field of politics, construction projects and quantification of financial aids for the agricultural sector. However, a group of scientists involved in Environmental Economy, thinks that this method is not suitable, as society do not really know the true value of the functions of the ecosystems. Even more, they add that solution has to do with the energy measurement of those benefits in order to give them their real value (objective value). In contrast, another group of scientists consider that Ecosystem Services (ES) valuation based on society’s opinion is completely necessary, justifying that these values are lated used as a politic tool. Therefore, the Thesis borns on order to answer this controversy, beginning with the energy calculations of the benefits produced by agricultural environments dedicated to energy crops. Besides, it also aims to clear if the current subjective method of valuation, the TEV, is the best choice for the job of political tool or if there is instead, another better way of doing this. To do that, It has been used an innovative method; The Emergy Method (spelled with “m”). This method consist of determining the necessary energy investment for developing services such as carbon sequestration or water retention, among others. In other words, it allows to obtain the environmental effort printed on the implementation of beneficial ecological functions for human being. With results already obtained, it can be seen; first, the energy investment necessary for biomass production; second, the current method, based on Total Economic Valuation does not express the true value of the ecosystem functions as are undervalued in 331 dollars per hectare and year (in energy crops); third, the best way for valuing ES implies a combination of methods, the Emergy and the TEV. Finally, through the obtention of the energy investment required by the environment for the biomass production, first steps for developing an application that allows to define the most proper areas for a biomass burner industry are given. These areas bounds the surface in which the obtention of a joule of electricity using energy crops requires less environmental effort that the same joule based on fossil fuels, taking on account the terrain, the geometry of the roads used for supplying the industry of biomass and the efficiency of the combustion process.

    Prostatic artery embolization versus transurethral resection of the prostate: a post hoc cost analysis of a randomized controlled clinical trial

    Purpose: to perform a post hoc analysis of patient-incurred costs in a randomized controlled clinical trial comparing prostatic artery embolization (PAE) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Materials and Methods: patients older than 60 years with indication of TURP were randomized to PAE or TURP procedure. After intervention and hospital discharge, patients were follow-up during 12 months The associated patient costs were categorized according to the study period: pre-intervention, intervention, hospitalization, and follow-up. Several items for both groups were analyzed within each study period. Results: the mean total costs per patient were lower for PAE (€ 3,192.87) than for TURP (€ 3,974.57), with this difference of € 781.70 being significant (p = 0.026). For most evaluated items, the mean costs were significantly higher for TURP. No significant differences were observed in the mean costs of PAE (€ 1,468.00) and TURP (€ 1,684.25) procedures (p = 0.061). However, the histopathology analysis, recovery room stay, and intraoperative laboratory analysis increased the interventional costs for TURP (€ 1,999.70) compared with PAE (€ 1,468.00) (p < 0.001). No cost differences were observed between PAE (€ 725.26) and TURP (€ 556.22) during the 12 months of follow-up (p = 0.605). None of patients required a repeat intervention during the study period. Conclusions: considering the short-term follow-up, PAE was associated with significantly lower costs compared with TURP. Future investigations in the context of routine clinical practice should be aimed at comparing the long-term effectiveness of both procedures and determining their cost-effectiveness.

    Evaluation of R tools for downloading MODIS images and their use in urban growth analysis of the city of Tarija (Bolivia)

    The aim of this study was to compare the available tools in R for downloading and processing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, specifically the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) product. The R tools evaluated were the MODIS package, RGISTools, MODISTools, R Google Earth Engine (RGEE) package, MODIStsp, and the Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS) application. Each tool was used to download the same product (EVI) corresponding to the same day (3 December 2015), and downloaded data were used to analyze the urban growth of Tarija (Bolivia) as an interesting application. The following features were analyzed: download time and memory used during the download, additional postprocessing time, local memory occupied on the computer, and downloaded file formats. Results showed that the most efficient R tools were those that work directly in the “cloud” or use text queries (RGEE and AppEEARS, respectively) and provide, as a final product, a cropped.tif image according to the area of interest.

    Cost-utility analysis of prostatic artery embolization for treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms

    Purpose: To perform a post hoc cost–utility analysis of a randomized controlled clinical trial comparing prostatic artery embolization (PAE) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cost–utility analysis over a 5-year period to compare PAE versus TURP from a Spanish National Health System perspective. Data were collected from a randomized clinical trial performed at a single institution. Effectiveness was measured as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was derived from the cost and QALY values associated with these treatments. Further sensitivity analysis was performed to account for the impact of reintervention on the cost-effectiveness of both procedures. Results: At the 1-year follow-up, PAE resulted in mean cost per patient of €2904.68 and outcome of 0.975 QALYs per treatment. In comparison, TURP had cost €3846.72 per patient and its outcome was 0.953 QALYs per treatment. At 5 years, the cost for PAE and TURP were €4117.13 and €4297.58, and the mean QALY outcome was 4.572 and 4.487, respectively. Analysis revealed an ICER of €2121.15 saved per QALY gained when comparing PAE to TURP at long-term follow-up. Reintervention rate for PAE and TURP was 12% and 0%, respectively. Conclusions: Compared to TURP, in short term, PAE could be considered a cost-effective strategy within the Spanish healthcare system for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, in long term, the superiority is less apparent due to higher reintervention rates.

    Filling missing data and smoothing altered data in satellite imagery with a spatial functional procedure

    Outliers and missing data are commonly found in satellite imagery. These are usually caused by atmospheric or electronic failures, hampering the correct monitoring of remote-sensing data. To avoid distorted data, we propose a procedure called 'spatial functional prediction' (SFP). The SFP procedure consists of the following: (1) aggregating remote-sensing data for reducing the number of missing data and/or outliers; (2) additively decomposing the time series of images into a trend, a seasonal, and an error component; (3) defining the spatial functional data and predicting the trend component using an ordinary kriging; and (4) adding back the seasonal and error components to the predicted trend. The benefits of the SFP procedure are illustrated in the following scenarios: introducing random outliers, random missing data, mixtures of both, and artificial clouds in an extensive simulation study of composite images, and using daily images with real clouds. The following two derived variables are considered: land surface temperature (LST day) and normalized vegetation index (NDVI), which are obtained as remote-sensing data in a region in northern Spain during 2003–2016. The performance of SFP was checked using the root mean squared error (RMSE). A comparison with a procedure based on predicting with thin-plate splines (TpsP) is also made. We conclude that SFP is simpler and faster than TpsP, and provides smaller values of RMSE.

    Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) using polyethylene glycol microspheres: safety and efficacy in 81 patients

    Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of prostatic artery embolization (PAE) using polyethylene glycol microspheres (PEGM) in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Materials and methods: This multicentric prospective study enrolled 81 patients who underwent PAE with 400 ± 75 µm PEGM (HydroPearl®, Terumo, Japan). Results from baseline and 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups were assessed for subjective outcomes including International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS), Quality of life (QoL), and International Index of Erectile Function, and objective outcomes such as peak urinary flow (Qmax) and post-void residual volume (PVR). The visual analogue scale, satisfaction questionnaire, prostatic volume, and prostatic specific antigen levels were also evaluated. Complications were documented using the modified Clavien-Dindo classification. Results: Technical success was obtained in all patients. Clinical success was achieved in 78.5% of patients. Before PAE, 54.3% of patients had an indwelling catheter which was removed in 75% of them after procedure. A statistically significant decrease was observed in IPSS and QoL from baseline to 12 months (20.14 vs 5.89; 4.8 vs 0.63, P <.01), respectively. Objective outcomes also showed a statistically significant improvement in Qmax (+ 114.9%; P <.01), achieving a maximum urinary flow of 14.2 mL/sec, and PVR (decrease 58%; P <.05) at 12 months. Minor complications (Clavien-Dindo grades I-II) occurred in 13.6% of patients, without major complications observed. Conclusion: PAE with PEGM is safe and effective treatment in patients with symptomatic BPH, with a significant improvement in both subjective and objective outcomes
