Specifically, six photonic crystal fiber sensors which are based on a Sagnac interferometer that includes a suspended-core fiber have been used. These sensors offer a high sensitivity for microdisplacement measurements. The fiber sensor network presents a ladder structure and its operation mode is based on a fiber ring laser which combines Raman and Erbium doped fiber amplification. The proposed sensor network multiplexes low-cost intensity point sensors based on fiber-optic tapers, which are able to measure vibrations in the 0.01 to 50 Hz frequency range. The sensor network with a double-bus is a low noise configuration, which offers a higher optical signal to noise ratio and dynamic range than a single-bus. Thus, the number of sensors to be multiplexed could increase or we could reach further distances. Two sorts of Ytterbium doped fiber (YDF) with different concentration have been used. A proper characterization of the YDFs has been performed in order to find the optimum YDF length. To this end, the output power and the slope-efficiency have been calculated and the signal amplification and the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectra have been analyzed, which are strictly related to the absorption and emission cross-section of the YDF. The first stage has been studied for both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed regime. Unlike conventional internally modulated fiber lasers, no distortion of the modulating frequency or self-mode-locking effects were measured. The laser is based on ring resonators and employs fiber Bragg gratings to select the operation wavelengths. The topology of the laser has a significant influence in its performance: allowing an independent control of the losses for both lasing wavelengths and achieving a low noise configuration. This kind of cavity is based on cooperative Rayleigh scattering, which is generated along a fiber due to the material inhomogeneities presented in that fiber. In this work, basics of Random fiber lasers and different demonstrated lasing sensors systems for interrogating arrays of optical fiber sensors are shown. The first fiber laser is based on a hybrid ring–random fiber laser, the second one is a pure ring fiber laser, and the last one is a random fiber laser. Several aspects have been taken into account in the study. First, from the optical point of view, the parameters of interest compared are output power, lasing threshold, slope efficiency, power fluctuations, and the longitudinal modes have been analyzed. In this review, the four categories of protection to allow service to be reestablished after a failure (dedicated/shared and line/path) are thoroughly discussed. The networks are designed to be inherently resilient to fibre failures because they enable simultaneous interrogation of all the optical fibre sensors using both rings. The first design demonstrates the feasibility of the so called 'dedicated protection' and the second one 'shared protection' for fibre optic intensity sensors. Raman amplification is used to overcome the losses of the couplers used in the rings, providing power transparency. The first network uses Raman amplification in both constituent rings but in the second one Raman pumping is activated only when a fibre failure occurs. We demonstrate how the topology allows the received powers from the sensors to be equalized.
