Low profile THz periodic leaky-wave antenna
(IEEE, 2014) Beaskoetxea Gartzia, Unai; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Rodríguez Ulibarri, Pablo; Etayo Salinas, David; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Navarro Cía, Miguel; Zehar, Mokhtar; Blary, Karine; Chahadih, Abdallah; Han, Xiang-Lei; Akalin, Tahsin; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this work, a 0.566THz flat leaky-wave antenna, consisting of a central λ0/2 slot surrounded by straight parallel wedge corrugations, is numerically and experimentally analyzed. Simulations show a moderately high gain and no significant differences when compared with a typical square corrugation profile. Numerical comparison is also made for the designed and manufactured antennas. High transmission enhancement in the corrugated case is obtained, compared to that given by a single central slot with no grooves. This kind of antennas finds several applications in different frequency ranges, including the nowadays high-interest range of the THz.

A gap waveguide fed circular polarization antennas in the millimeter wave range
(IEEE, 2020) Pérez Quintana, Dayan; Torres García, Alicia E.; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
In this work, a novel circular polarization (CP) antennas in ridge gap waveguide (RGW) working in the V-band of the millimeter-wave spectrum is presented. CP is generated in a simple and effective way by means of two orthogonal feeder arms that excite a CP in a rotated square-shaped slot placed on top metallic lid. Parametric simulation studies demonstrate that a difference between both arms length of approximately λ/4 leads to high-purity CP within a relatively broad bandwidth. A square-shaped slot antenna is manufactured and experimentally analyzed. A broadband matching with a reflection coefficient magnitude below -10 dB (S11 <; -10 dB) is achieved from 60.5 to 69.3 GHz. Applying the axial ratio criterion (AR <; 3 dB) the bandwidth in CP is 10.74%, with respect to the central frequency. The maximum gain at broadside is 5.49 dB at 66.8 GHz.

A slow light fishnet-like absorber in the millimeter-wave range
(EMW Publishing, 2011) Navarro Cía, Miguel; Torres Landívar, Víctor; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
A novel route to achieve a narrowband free-space electromagnetic absorber in any range of the spectrum based on stacked subwavelength hole arrays is proposed. The absorption is obtained by means of a slow light mode inside a fishnet-like engineered structure and exploiting the unavoidable misalignments and bucklings of the free-standing stack. An incoming pulse becomes permanently trapped in the structure due to the near zero group velocity which causes an enhancement of the radiation-structure interaction that leads to a huge increment of losses arising from the finite conductivity of the metal as well as arrangement tolerances. This approach is studied not only by simulation but also experimentally under normal incidence at millimeter wavelengths. Moreover, a basic grasp about the angular dependence of the structure is given by analyzing the 2D dispersion diagram. It shows that this scheme may also display high absorption under oblique incidence for s-polarization (or TE-polarization), whereas p-polarization (TM-polarization) would degrade its performance.

Terahertz carpet cloak based on a ring resonator metasurface
(American Physical Society, 2015) Orazbayev, Bakhtiyar; Mohammadi Estakhri, Nasim; Beruete Díaz, Miguel; Alù, Andrea; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this work we present the concept and design of an ultrathin (λ/22) terahertz (THz) unidirectional carpet cloak based on the local phase compensation approach enabled by gradient metasurfaces. A triangular surface bump with center height of 4.1 mm (1.1λ) and tilt angle of 20° is covered with a metasurface composed of an array of suitably designed closed ring resonators with a transverse gradient of surface impedance. The ring resonators provide a wide range of control for the reflection phase with small absorption losses, enabling efficient phase manipulation along the edge of the bump. Our numerical results demonstrate a good performance of the designed cloak in both near field and far field, and the cloaked object mimics a flat ground plane within a broad range of incidence angles, over 35° angular spectrum centered at 45°. The presented cloak design can be applied in radar and antenna systems as a thin, lightweight, and easy to fabricate solution for radio and THz frequencies.
