    Spatial characterization of personal RF-EMF exposure in public transportation buses

    New services and applications within vehicular environments employ multiple wireless communication systems, within a Heterogeneous Network framework. In this context, evaluation of electromagnetic field impact is compulsory, in order to warrant compliance with current exposure limits. In this work, E-field strength distribution within urban transportation buses is studied, in which different types of buses as well as network configurations are considered. E-field estimations are obtained within the complete interior volume of the urban buses, considering all of the characteristics in terms of bus structure and materials employed, by means of an in-house developed deterministic 3D Ray-Launching (3D-RL) code. In this way, relevant phenomena in terms of electromagnetic propagation and interaction are considered, such as multipath propagation and shadowing, which determine exposure levels as a function of transceiver location within the bus scenarios. The behavior in terms of E-field distribution of wireless Public Land Mobile communication systems within transportation buses have been analyzed by means of measurement campaigns employing personal exposimeter devices. In addition, E-field volumetric distributions by means of 3D-RL simulations have been obtained as a function of user distribution within the buses, with the aim of analyzing the impact of user presence within complex intra-vehicular indoor scenarios such as urban transportation buses. A comparison with current exposure limits given by currently adopted standards is obtained, showing that E-field levels were below the aforementioned limits. The use of deterministic simulation techniques based on 3D-RL enables E-field exposure analysis in complex indoor scenarios, offering an optimized balance between accuracy and computational cost. These results and the proposed simulation methodology, can aid in an adequate assessment of human exposure to non-ionizing radiofrequency fields in public transportation buses, considering the impact of the morphology and the topology of vehicles, for current as well as for future wireless technologies and exposure limits.

    Silicon-based 0.450-0.475 THz series-fed double dielectric resonator on-chip antenna array based on metamaterial properties for integrated-circuits

    The antenna array designed to operate over 0.450-0.475 Terahertz comprises two dielectric resonators (DRs) that are stacked vertically on top of each other and placed on the surface of the slot antenna fabricated on a silicon substrate using standard CMOS technology. The slot created in the silicon substrate is meandering and is surrounded by metallic via-wall to prevent energy dissipation. The antenna has a maximum gain of 4.5dBi and radiation efficiency of 45.7% at 0.4625 THz. The combination of slot and vias transform the antenna to a metamaterial structure that provides a relatively small antenna footprint. The proposed series-fed double DRs on-chip antenna array is useful for applications in THz integrated circuits.

    A new study to suppress mutual-coupling between waveguide slot array antennas based on metasurface bulkhead for MIMO systems

    In this paper, a new method is proposed to reduce mutual coupling between waveguide slot array (WSA) antennas based on metasurface technology. This is achieved by placing a metasurface bulkhead between the two WSA antennas. Performance of the dual-waveguide antenna structure is shown to substantially enhance when compared against an identical reference WSA antenna with no metasurface. WSA antennas used in the study has dimensions 40×20×5mm 3 and operates over 1.7-3.66 GHz, which corresponds to a fractional bandwidth of 73.13%. The average isolation of the reference WSA antennas is -20 dB; however, with a metasurface bulkhead the isolation is shown to increase to -36.5 dB. In addition, the bandwidth extends by ~10%, and the gain improves by 14.66%. The proposed method is should find application in MIMO systems where high isolation between neighbouring radiation elements is required to improve the antenna characteristics, and mimimise array phase errors, which is necessary to enhance the system performance.

    This paper describes a telematic system based on an intelligent van which is capable of tracing pharmaceutical drugs over delivery routes from a warehouse to pharmacies, without altering carriers' daily conventional tasks. The intelligent van understands its environment, taking into account its location, the assets and the predefined delivery route; with the capability of reporting incidences to carriers in case of failure according to the established distribution plan. It is a non-intrusive solution which represents a successful experience of using smart environments and an optimized Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) embedded system in a viable way to resolve a real industrial need in the pharmaceutical industry. The combination of deterministic modeling of the indoor vehicle, the implementation of an ad-hoc radiating element and an agile software platform within an overall system architecture leads to a competitive, flexible and scalable solution.

    Analysis and description of HOLTIN service provision for AECG monitoring in complex indoor environments

    In this work, a novel ambulatory ECG monitoring device developed in-house called HOLTIN is analyzed when operating in complex indoor scenarios. The HOLTIN system is described, from the technological platform level to its functional model. In addition, by using in-house 3D ray launching simulation code, the wireless channel behavior, which enables ubiquitous operation, is performed. The effect of human body presence is taken into account by a novel simplified model embedded within the 3D Ray Launching code. Simulation as well as measurement results are presented, showing good agreement. These results may aid in the adequate deployment of this novel device to automate conventional medical processes, increasing the coverage radius and optimizing energy consumption.

    Wideband printed monopole antenna for application in wireless communication systems

    Empirical results of an electrically small printed monopole antenna are described with a fractional bandwidth of 185% (115 MHz to 2.90 GHz) for return-loss better than 10 dB, peak gain and radiation efficiency at 1.45 GHz of 2.35 dBi and 78.8%, respectively. The antenna geometry can be approximated to a back-to-back triangular shaped patch structure that is excited through a common feed-line with a meander-line T-shape divider. The truncated ground-plane includes a central stub located underneath the feed-line. The impedance bandwidth of the antenna is enhanced with the inclusion of meander-line slots in the patch and four double split-ring resonators on the underside of the radiating patches. The antenna radiates approximately omni-directionally to provide coverage over a large part of very high frequency, the whole of ultrahigh frequency, the whole of L-band and some parts of S-band. The antenna has dimensions of 48.32 × 43.72 × 0.8 mm 3 , which is corresponding to the electrical size of 0.235 λ 0 × 0.211 λ 0 × 0.003 λ 0 , where λ 0 is the free-space wavelength at 1.45 GHz. The proposed low-profile low-cost antenna is suitable for application in wideband wireless communications systems.

    Zigbee radio channel analysis in a complex vehicular environment [wireless corner]

    In this paper, the influence of topology and morphology of a particularly complex scenario for the deployment of ZigBee wireless sensor networks is analyzed. This complex scenario is a car. The existence of loss mechanisms such as material absorption (seats, dashboard, etc.) and strong multipath components due to the great number of obstacles and the metallic environment (bodywork), as well as the growing demand for wireless systems within a vehicle emphasizes the importance of the configuration of the heterogeneous intra-car wireless systems. Measurement results as well as simulation results by means of an in-house 3D ray launching algorithm illustrate the strong influence of this complex scenario in the overall performance of the intra-car wireless sensor network. Results also show that ZigBee is a viable technology for successfully deploying intra-car wireless sensor networks.

    In this work it is demonstrated that substrate integrated waveguide longitudinal slotted array antenna (SIWLSAA) which is loaded with metal fences exhibits high-isolation across VHF/UHF bands. A reference SIWLSAA used for comparison purpose comprises of 3×6 slotted arrays constructed on the top and bottom sides of the FR-4 lossy substrate has maximum isolation of -63 dB between its radiation slots. Improvement in isolation is demonstrated using a simple new technique based on inserting a metal fence between each row of slot arrays. The resulting isolation is shown to be is better than -83 dB across 200 MHz to 1.0 GHz with gain greater than 1.5 dBi, and side-lobe level less than - 40 dB. The proposed SIWLSAA is compact and has dimensions of 40×10×5 mm 3 (0.026?×0.006?×0.0020) where ? is 200 MHz. The proposed structure should find application in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and radar systems.

    Hybrid computational techniques: electromagnetic propagation analysis in complex indoor environments

    In this article, we compare deterministic methodologies for characterizing channel behavior in heterogeneous and composite scenarios. These techniques include one that combines a 3D ray launching (RL) approach based on geometrical optics (GO), a second based on GO and the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD), and another that includes a diffusion equation (DE) method based on the equation of transfer. A new methodology based on the GO and DE is presented and shown to achieve accurate results when compared with real measurements. The proposed technique provides a computational time reduction of up to 90% compared to the conventional approach using GO with the UTD and DE.

    This paper presents an intelligent streetlight management system based on LED lamps, designed to facilitate its deployment in existing facilities. The proposed approach, which is based on wireless communication technologies, will minimize the cost of investment of traditional wired systems, which always need civil engineering for burying of cable underground and consequently are more expensive than if the connection of the different nodes is made over the air. The deployed solution will be aware of their surrounding’s environmental conditions, a fact that will be approached for the system intelligence in order to learn, and later, apply dynamic rules. The knowledge of real time illumination needs, in terms of instant use of the street in which it is installed, will also feed our system, with the objective of providing tangible solutions to reduce energy consumption according to the contextual needs, an exact calculation of energy consumption and reliable mechanisms for preventive maintenance of facilities.
