Publication Open Access High sensitivity optical fiber pH sensor using poly(acrylic acid) nanofibers(IEEE, 2013-12-19) Corres Sanz, Jesús María; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Rodríguez García, Yoany; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this work a new optical fiber pH sensor based on the deposition of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) using the electrospinning technique is presented. The optical fiber structure consists of a 4 cm segment of hollow core fiber (50/150¿m) spliced between two standard multimode fibers onto which the nanoweb is deposited. The sensitive layer is a membrane composed by PAA nanofibers deposited onto the surface of an optical fiber. The sensor has a repetitive behavior and low hysteresis in the pH range 4-7, with an average sensitivity of 0,53 dB/pH.Publication Open Access Simultaneous measurement of humidity and temperature based on a partially coated optical fiber long period grating(Elsevier, 2016) Urrutia Azcona, Aitor; Goicoechea Fernández, Javier; Ricchiuti, Amelia L.; Barrera, D.; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y ElectrónicaA humidity and temperature optical fiber sensor based on a long-period grating (LPG), which can provide simultaneous response to both magnitudes, is proposed and demonstrated via experiments. Previously, the LPG was fully coated with humidity sensitive nanostructured polymeric thin films by the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) nano assembly technique. Hence the surrounding refractive index was changed, so provoking wavelength shifts of the attenuation bands of the transmission spectrum. This fully coated LPG was exposed to relative humidity (RH) and temperature tests, varying from 20% to 80% RH and from 25 to 85 °C, respectively. Then, half of the LPG coating was chemically removed and this results in the splitting of the main attenuation band into two different contributions. When this semi-coated LPG was also exposed to RH and temperature tests, the new two attenuation bands presented different behaviors for humidity and temperature. This novel dual-wavelength based sensing method enables the simultaneous measurement of RH and temperature using only one LPG.Publication Open Access Sensitivity enhancement experimental demonstration using a low cutoff wavelength SMS modified structure coated with a pH sensitive film(Elsevier, 2018) Rodríguez Rodríguez, Wenceslao Eduardo; Del Villar, Ignacio; Ruiz Zamarreño, Carlos; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Rodríguez Rodríguez, Adolfo Josué; Domínguez Cruz, René; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaThe multimode interference (MMI) effect in a single mode-multimode-single mode (SMS) can be used fordevelopment of wavelength shift detection based sensors. In this work, the focus is centered on obtainingwavelength shifts with low cutoff single mode fibers, which allows exploring the wavelength range from600 to 1000 nm, where optical sources and detectors are less expensive than at longer wavelengths. Inaddition, the application of a reduction in the fiber diameter of the SMS structure by means of HF etching, combined with the deposition of a thin-film, enables to enhance the sensitivity of the devices at thesame time the objective mentioned before is achieved. In this sense, the effect of the deposition of a pHsensitive thin-film on SMS structures with different diameters allowed attaining a maximum sensitivityof 15 nm per pH unit in the range from pH 4 to pH 6, which improves by a factor of 3 the sensitivity ofSMS sensors without etching operating at longer wavelengths.Publication Open Access Sensors based on thin-film coated cladding removed multimode optical fiber and single-mode multimode single-mode fiber: a comparative study(Hindawi Publishing Corporation, 2015) Del Villar, Ignacio; Socorro Leránoz, Abián Bentor; Hernáez Sáenz de Zaitigui, Miguel; Corres Sanz, Jesús María; Ruiz Zamarreño, Carlos; Sánchez Zábal, Pedro; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaTwo simple optical fibre structures that do not require the inscription of a grating, a cladding removed multimode optical fibre (CRMOF) and a single-mode multimode single-mode structure (SMS), are compared in terms of their adequateness for sensing once they are coated with thin-films.The thin-film deposited (TiO2/PSS) permits increasing the sensitivity to surrounding medium refractive index. The results obtained can be extrapolated to other fields such as biological or chemical sensing just by replacing the thin-film by a specific material.Publication Open Access Influence in cladding mode distribution of overlay deposition on long-period fiber gratings(Optical Society of America, 2006) Del Villar, Ignacio; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaA thin overlay of higher refractive index than that of the cladding of a long-period fiber grating induces in cladding modes strong variations in effective index, mode profile, cross-coupling coefficient with the core mode, and self-coupling coefficient. Some conditions must be met in order to obtain the highest inducement. The key parameters are the thickness and the refractive index of the overlay, and the ambient refractive index. Under optimum conditions, the sensitivity of the device to variations in any of the critical parameters is improved in a great manner. The result is large shifts of the attenuation bands in the transmission spectrum. If the refractive index of the overlay is complex, there is an additional phenomenon of vanishing of the attenuation bands in the transmission spectrum. This occurs for specific thickness values of the overlay. The problem is solved in two steps: a vectorial analysis of the modes and the application of coupled-mode theoryPublication Open Access Long period fiber gratings with overlay of variable refractive index(IEEE, 2005) Del Villar, Ignacio; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaA theoretical analysis is presented of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with an overlay of variable refractive index. The highest sensitivity of the resonance wavelengths to variations in the refractive index of the overlay can be optimized. There are two key points for a good design: the selection of an overlay refractive index close to that of the cladding of the LPFG and the overlay thickness. The problem is analyzed with a numerical method based on coupled-mode theory.Publication Open Access ZnO based, piezotronic optical fiber sensors for tracing volatile organic compounds(IEEE, 2023-09-04) López Torres, Diego; Elosúa Aguado, César; Pappas, Georgios A.; Konstantaki, Maria; Klini, Argyro; Lappas, Alexandros; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Pissadakis, Stavros; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoa eta Telekomunikazio IngeniaritzaThe detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a major market and research domain, where optical sensing technologies have shown promising advances. Accordingly, ZnO has been extensively used as a transduction material in the sensing of VOCs in the vapour phase, while employing both resistive and optical detection methodologies. ZnO also exhibits significant piezoelectric properties, which in turn have been recently used in the development of piezotronic self-powered, sensing and actuating devices.Publication Open Access Deposition of coatings on long-period fiber gratings: tunnel effect analogy(Springer, 2006) Del Villar, Ignacio; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaThe sensitivity of Long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs), coated with high-refractive-index thin film overlays, to the refractive index and the thickness of the overlay, and to the ambient refractive index, can be enhanced with a design based on a two-overlay coating of an LPFG. The first overlay of lower refractive index than the cladding affects the guidance of a cladding mode in the second overlay of higher refractive index than the cladding. This causes a more abrupt cladding modal redistribution than with the deposition of a unique high-refractive-index overlay. The phenomenon is analyzed with a method based on a vectorial analysis of modes and the application of coupled mode theory.Publication Open Access Deposition of an overlay with electrostactic self-assembly method in long period fiber gratings(Optical Society of America, 2005) Del Villar, Ignacio; Achaerandio Alvira, Miguel; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaIt was proved that the deposition of an overlay material onto a long-period fiber grating causes important shifts in the wavelengths of the typical attenuation bands that are caused by coupling between cladding and core modes [Opt. Lett. 27, 682 (2002)]. A theoretical model for analyzing a multilayer cylindrical waveguide is presented that permits the phenomenon to be understood and predicted. An overlay of higher refractive index than the cladding starts to guide a mode if a certain thickness value is exceeded. This causes large shifts in the resonance wavelength induced by the grating. One important application of this phenomenon to sensors is enhancement of the sensitivity of a long-period fiber grating to ambient conditions. Theoretical results are corroborated with experimental ones obtained by electrostatic self-assembly.Publication Open Access Generation of selective fringes with cascaded long-period gratings(IEEE, 2006) Del Villar, Ignacio; Achaerandio Alvira, Miguel; Arregui San Martín, Francisco Javier; Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Gobierno de Navarra / Nafarroako GobernuaThe inscription of cascaded long-period gratings of different periods in optical fiber permits us to obtain both narrowband and wideband filters in the same spectrum. If used as an optical transducer, it may permit us to detect with the same device- wide and small parameter changes. The transmission spectra have been simulated using a theoretical model based on LP mode coupling and have been also experimentally demonstrated.
