    Enhanced optical fiber lasers and optical fiber sensors assisted by micro-drilled optical fibers

    Enhanced OFS assisted by micro-drilled optical fibers acting as mirrors are demonstrated. Strain sensitivity improved more than one order of magnitude in comparison with FBG sensors using a 50 μm-waist micro-drilled taper as distributed reflector.

    Optical fiber bus protection network to multiplex sensors: experimental validation of self-diagnosis

    The experimental demonstration of a resilient wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber bus network to interconnect sensors is reported. The network recovers operation after failures and it performs 'self-diagnosis', the identification of the failed constituent(s) from the patterns of surviving end-toend connections at its operating wavelengths. We provide clear evidence for the channel arrivals predicted by theory. In doing so, we explore the potential for spurious signals caused by reflections from broken fiber ends. Appropriate precautionary measures, especially the imposition of electronic thresholds at the receivers, can greatly reduce the scope for false diagnoses. Software to predict the failure site within the network from the arriving channels at the receivers is also reported. We describe how to coordinate self-diagnosis with protection switching so as to reduce the momentary service interruption.

    Paracetamol concentration-sensing scheme based on a linear cavity fiber laser configuration

    A paracetamol concentration-sensing scheme based on a linear cavity fiber laser configuration is demonstrated experimentally. The laser cavity has a fiber sensor at one end, that allows refractive index measurements. The refractometer consists of a cleaved fiber tip combined with an FBG functioning as a reflecting mirror. The combination of a fiber loop mirror at the other end allows to reflect all the light from the FBG and refractometer, forming a linear cavity. By measuring the intensity variation of the Fresnel reflection at the fiber-to-liquid interface, the measured concentration is linear and have a concentration sensitivity of -8.74±0.34×10-5 µW/(g/kg), over a range of 52.61 to 219.25 g/kg, and with a resolution of 2.77 g/kg. The results obtained present high stability and prove the potential of the fiber laser system to performed real-time measurements of concentration, in a non-invasive way.

    Desde su desarrollo en los años 60 hasta nuestros días, los láseres de fibra óptica han ido incrementando su importancia en diversos ámbitos de nuestra vida. Ya sea en la medicina, la electrónica de consumo o la industria, las mejoras introducidas por este tipo de láseres han hecho que constituyan una de las principales líneas de investigación en nuestros días. En este artículo se presenta una breve descripción de los láseres de fibra óptica y sus aplicaciones.

    Gamma radiation measurements using an optical fiber laser

    A fiber ring laser cavity configuration was used to analyze the effect of gamma-irradiation over the performance of different types of erbium doped fibers. Preliminary results validates this method to monitor gamma-radiation in real time.

    High performance fiber laser resonator for dual band (C and L) sensing

    This work presents an experimental analysis and comparison of the performance of quasi-randomly distributed reflectors inscribed into a single-mode fiber as a sensing mirror both in C- and L-band. Single-wavelength emission has been obtained in either band when using these artificially controlled backscattering fiber reflectors in a ring-cavity fiber laser. Single-longitudinal mode operation with an optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of 47 dB and an output power instability as low as 0.04 dB have been measured when employing a C-band optical amplifier. When replaced by an L-band optical amplifier, a single-longitudinal mode behavior has also been obtained, showing an OSNR of 44 dB and an output power instability of 0.09 dB. Regarding their performance as fiber-laser sensing systems, very similar temperature and strain sensitivities have been obtained in both bands, comparable to fiber Bragg grating sensors in the case of temperature and one order of magnitude higher in the case of strain variations.

    Stable L-band fiber laser sensor using a backscattering-based multimode fiber reflector

    A new and highly stable L-band fiber laser for sensing is demonstrated. An emission line at 1575.47 nm, was achieved using a special reflector. Good strain sensitivity, optical signal to noise ratio and output power stability were measured.

    Single-longitudinal-mode dual wavelength-switchable fiber laser based on superposed fiber bragg gratings

    n this work, a simple switchable dual-wavelength short-cavity fiber laser operating in a single-longitudinal-mode regime at room temperature and based on superposed fiber Bragg gratings is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Only by introducing stress into one of the overwritten FBGs, single- or dual-wavelength laser oscillations can be attained. Either single- or multimode operation of the laser can be easily achieved. Single-longitudinal-mode emission has been verified in two different ways: the first corroboration has been conducted by the heterodyne detection of the output signal, and the second one has been carried out by using a high-resolution optical spectrum analyzer.

    Spatial-frequency multiplexing of high-sensitivity liquid level sensors based on multimode interference micro-fibers

    This paper shows a new fiber optic sensor multiplexed system for liquid level sensing. Biconical fibertapers converging at a 40 mm-long micro-fiber are used as transducers. The tapers are designed to providethe propagation of the two main cylindrical modes in the micro-fiber avoiding higher order modes ormodes with other symmetries. The liquid level is calculated in real time from the measurement of thefrequency and phase components of the spectral interference pattern of the submerged micro-fiber.The system is fully characterized by theoretical simulations in terms of the sensitivity as a function ofthe most responsive parameter, which is the width of the micro-fiber. Phase sensibilities of 3.7 rad/mmare experimentally obtained and values as high as 11.4 rad/mm are theoretically predicted. The strongdependence of the spatial frequency with the width of the micro-fiber has been used to multiplex threesensors in series in this domain. The maximum detected crosstalk between sensors is 0.2 rad/mm.

    Analyzing implicit gender bias in Optics and Photonics at the predoctoral stage in Spain

    Los prejuicios de género desempeñan un papel muy importante en áreas relacionadas con la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas (STEM). La asociación del género con determinados atributos, comportamientos o profesiones conduce a una menor proporción de mujeres en STEM. En el campo de la Óptica y la Fotónica, podemos identificar una disparidad de género entre enfoques técnicos o bioclínicos dentro de la misma área al examinar la autoría de la tesis defendida. En este trabajo, cuantificamos el impacto del sesgo implícito de género en los programas de doctorado relacionados con la Óptica y Fotónica en España. Aquí presentamos un estudio exhaustivo sobre los descriptores UNESCO de las tesis defendidas en el periodo 2015-2020 a través del repositorio de acceso abierto TESEO, donde se recopilan todas las tesis doctorales de las universidades españolas. Se considera el programa de doctorado de cada tesis y se clasifica en una categoría técnica o bioclínica. Con esta clasificación, cuantificamos el número de autores y autoras dentro de cada categoría, y los resultados muestran un claro desequilibrio en la mayoría de los descriptores evaluados: los hombres son más propensos a elegir programas de doctorado técnicos, mientras que las mujeres están mayoritariamente presentes en programas clínicos o biológicos. Esta diferencia se observa incluso en los descriptores en los que ambos sexos están representados por igual. Por un lado, la infrarrepresentación femenina es mayor en "Física", "Astronomía y Astrofísica", "Ciencias de la Tierra y del Espacio" y "Ciencias Tecnológicas". Por el contrario, las áreas de "Química", "Ciencias de la Vida" y "Ciencias Médicas" muestran una distribución más equilibrada entre hombres y mujeres en la mayoría de los descriptores.
