Long-range hybrid network with point and distributed Brillouin sensors using Raman amplification
(Optical Society of America, 2010) Zornoza Indart, Ander; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Elosúa Aguado, César; Díaz Lucas, Silvia; Bariáin Aisa, Cándido; Loayssa Lara, Alayn; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
We propose a novel concept for hybrid networks that combine point and distributed Brillouin sensors in a cost-effective architecture that also deploys remote distributed Raman amplification to extend the sensing range. A 46-km proof-of-concept network is experimentally demonstrated integrating point vibration sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings and tapers with distributed temperature sensing along the network bus. In this network the use of Raman amplification to compensate branching and fiber losses provides a temperature resolution of 0.7°C and 13 m. Moreover, it was possible to obtain good optical signal to noise ratio in the measurements from the four point vibration sensors that were remotely multiplexed in the network. These low-cost intensity sensors are able to measure vibrations in the 0.1 to 50 Hz frequency range, which are important in the monitoring of large infrastructures such as pipelines.

High sensitive micro-displacement intensity fiber sensor by using a multiwavelength erbium doped fiber ring laser based on optical add-drop multiplexers
(SPIE, 2014-06-02) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Leandro González, Daniel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this work, a wavelength division multiplexed fiber ring laser, based on optical add-drop multiplexers to interconnect intensity sensors has been experimentally demonstrated. Three different laser lines were obtained simultaneously all with an optical signal to noise ratio higher than 30dB. This proposed configuration is based on commercial devices and is adapted to the ITU channels normative. By using this configuration each sensor was associated with a different wavelength directly offered by each OADM and a reference wavelength was also included in order to distinguish between power variations induced by the transducer or to detect a fiber failure. This sensor system has been experimentally verified by using microbending sensors obtaining experimental slope sensitivity as good as -0.327dB/µm.

Measurement of paracetamol concentration using a fiber laser system
(IEEE, 2023) Soares, Liliana; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Novais, Susana; Ferreira, António; Frazão, Orlando; Silva, Susana; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
A linear fiber laser system for measurements of paracetamol concentration is experimentally demonstrated. The cavity is based on a fiber loop mirror and an FBG centered at 1567.8 nm. The sensing head corresponds to a refractometric sensor, whose which principle of operation is based on Fresnel reflection in the fiber tip (FBG side). The system works at detected variations of paracetamol concentrations with a sensitivity of [8.74± 0.34)× 10-5] µW/(g/kg) and a resolution of 2.77 g/kg. The results prove that the fiber laser system could be an asset for processing industries, specifically for non-invasive and real-time measurements of concentration.

    Robust fiber-optic sensor networks
(Springer, 2012) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Fernández Vallejo, Montserrat; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
The ability to operate despite failure will become increasingly important as the use of optical sensor networks grows, and the amount of sensing information to be handled by a sensor network is increasing, especially for safety and security applications. In this review, the four categories of protection to allow service to be reestablished after a failure (dedicated/shared and line/path) are thoroughly discussed. This paper also presents an overview of the most representative robust fiber-optic sensor systems, discussing their schemes, pros and cons.

Wavelength-switchable L-band fiber laser assisted by random reflectors
(EDP Open, 2023) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Roldán Varona, Pablo; Sánchez González, Arturo; Rodríguez Cobo, Luis; López Higuera, José Miguel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren
A wavelength-switchable L-band erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) assisted by an artificially controlled backscattering (ACB) fiber reflector is here presented. This random reflector was inscribed by femtosecond (fs) laser direct writing on the axial axis of a multimode fiber with 50 lm core and 125 lm cladding with a length of 17 mm. This microstructure was placed inside a surgical syringe to be positioned in the center of a high-precision rotation mount to accurately control its angle of rotation. Only by rotating this mount, three different output spectra were obtained: a single wavelength lasing centered at 1574.75 nm, a dual wavelength lasing centered at 1574.75 nm and 1575.75 nm, and a single wavelength lasing centered at 1575.5 nm. All of them showed an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of around 60 dB when pumped at 300 mW

Resilient amplified double ring optical networks to multiplex optical fibre sensors
(IEEE / OSA, 2009) Fernández Vallejo, Montserrat; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Elosúa Aguado, César; Díaz Lucas, Silvia; Urquhart, Paul; Bariáin Aisa, Cándido; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
We report the experimental demonstration of two configurations of an amplified optical fibre double ring network for the multiplexing of sensors. The networks are designed to be inherently resilient to fibre failures because they enable simultaneous interrogation of all the optical fibre sensors using both rings. The first design demonstrates the feasibility of the so called 'dedicated protection' and the second one 'shared protection' for fibre optic intensity sensors. Raman amplification is used to overcome the losses of the couplers used in the rings, providing power transparency. The first network uses Raman amplification in both constituent rings but in the second one Raman pumping is activated only when a fibre failure occurs. We demonstrate how the topology allows the received powers from the sensors to be equalized.

Multiplexing optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers based on air-microcavities
(SPIE, 2019) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Novais, Susana; Bravo Acha, Mikel; Leandro González, Daniel; Silva, Susana; Frazão, Orlando; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación
In this work we demonstrate the multiplexing capability of new optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers based on airmicrocavities using a commercial FBG interrogator. Three optimized air-microcavity interferometer sensors have been multiplexed in a single network and have been monitored using the commercial FBGs interrogator in combination with FFT calculations. Results show a sensitivity of 2.18 π rad/mε and a crosstalk-free operation.

Experimental optimization in terms of power stability and output power of highly Er-doped fiber lasers with single and hybrid cavities
(Taylor & Francis, 2010) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Chen, Shuying; Zhao, Weizhong; Sun, Tong; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa
In this article, the output power stability of several different highly erbiumdoped fiber ring lasers, as a function of the laser parameters, is experimentally investigated. The study is focused on the optimization of several key parameters (erbium-doped fiber length, pump power, and different laser configurations) without changing the basic scheme. The results obtained show that the laser configuration plays an important role in achieving stable multi-wavelength lasing at room temperature in the erbium-doped fiber ring lasers. For an optimized configuration, these power fluctuations are lower than 0.08 dB, showing a notable improvement compared with previously presented work where the output power variations were about 0.2 dB. These lasers have the advantage of a simple all-fiber configuration, low cost, high stability, and operability at room temperature.
