Game-based techniques appear to be an increasing trend in a wide range of learning areas, including health, social policy, and engineering, among others, not only in primary school but also in higher formal education. Using this methodology, the learning process becomes more stimulating while also reaching a competitive level in some circumstances. In the present work, the authors propose a new gamification strategy based on an escape-room in which all the puzzles to be passed are related to the area of optics and photonics and use readily available or low-cost equipment. The major field of application of this novel teaching strategy will be the practical section of a course, that is usually carried out in a laboratory, and will be aimed at both undergraduate and master's degree students. Three different laser lines were obtained simultaneously all with an optical signal to noise ratio higher than 30dB. This proposed configuration is based on commercial devices and is adapted to the ITU channels normative. By using this configuration each sensor was associated with a different wavelength directly offered by each OADM and a reference wavelength was also included in order to distinguish between power variations induced by the transducer or to detect a fiber failure. In this work, we provide an exhaustive data analysis of the Ph.D. theses defended in the field of optics and photonics in Spain by filtering key descriptors and gender. Our results show a severe underrepresentation of women in the Ph.D. stage in the optics community, which becomes even more prominent in technological and theoretical domains. The gender gap is reduced in biomedical and visual optics. This asymmetry is a symptom of gender bias in science associated with traditional stereotypes about health and social care. The interrogation of the sensing head is carried out by monitoring the fast Fourier transform (FFT) phase of one of the FFT peaks of the microwire transmission signal. This technique is not dependent of the signal amplitude and also eludes the requisite of tracking the wavelength evolution in the spectrum, which can be a handicap when there are multiple interference frequency components with different sensitivities. The point sensor is able to measure a wide humidity range (20%-70% relative humidity) with a maximum sensitivity reached of 0.14πrad/% relative humidity. This microwire sensor is also operated within a frequency range from 320 to 1300 Hz with a sensitivity of around 0.0051 nm -1 /Hz. The saturable absorber comprised a GO thin film deposited onto a single-mode fiber using the spray coating technique. Water-dispersed GO with a concentration of 4 mg/mL, characterized by a high proportion of monolayer flakes, was employed. This thin film was integrated into a cavity ring laser featuring an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), resulting in a fiber laser emitting at a central emission wavelength of approximately 1564 nm and having a total cavity length of approximately 120 m. By controlling intracavity polarization, short-pulsed light was generated through mode-locking, Q switching, or a combination of both regimes. This work presents a comprehensive characterization of the cavity ring laser operating under the mode-locking regime. It encompasses an analysis of the spectral behavior, focusing on the evolution of the Kelly¿s sidebands with increasing pump power, as well as an assessment of its temporal stability. Moreover, the effects of the aging of the saturable absorber material were studied after a time period of 6 months after the fabrication. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber cavity laser based on a tapered optical fiber segment that generates artificially controlled backscattering. The 50-mu m-waist taper was fabricated from a standard single-mode fiber, and the taper was subsequently microdrilled using a femtosecond laser micromachining system. The laser generation properties conferred by the microdrilled optical fiber taper were experimentally investigated. La asociación del género con determinados atributos, comportamientos o profesiones conduce a una menor proporción de mujeres en STEM. En el campo de la Óptica y la Fotónica, podemos identificar una disparidad de género entre enfoques técnicos o bioclínicos dentro de la misma área al examinar la autoría de la tesis defendida. En este trabajo, cuantificamos el impacto del sesgo implícito de género en los programas de doctorado relacionados con la Óptica y Fotónica en España. Aquí presentamos un estudio exhaustivo sobre los descriptores UNESCO de las tesis defendidas en el periodo 2015-2020 a través del repositorio de acceso abierto TESEO, donde se recopilan todas las tesis doctorales de las universidades españolas. Se considera el programa de doctorado de cada tesis y se clasifica en una categoría técnica o bioclínica. Con esta clasificación, cuantificamos el número de autores y autoras dentro de cada categoría, y los resultados muestran un claro desequilibrio en la mayoría de los descriptores evaluados: los hombres son más propensos a elegir programas de doctorado técnicos, mientras que las mujeres están mayoritariamente presentes en programas clínicos o biológicos. Esta diferencia se observa incluso en los descriptores en los que ambos sexos están representados por igual. Por un lado, la infrarrepresentación femenina es mayor en "Física", "Astronomía y Astrofísica", "Ciencias de la Tierra y del Espacio" y "Ciencias Tecnológicas". The saturable absorber consisted of a thin GO film, with a high concentration of monolayer GO flakes, spray-coated on the end face of a ferrule-connected fiber. By including the saturable absorber in the laser cavity and controlling the intra-cavity polarization, the generation of short-pulsed light was achieved under mode-locking and Q-switching operations. Under mode-locking operation, it was observed a pulse train with a fundamental repetition rate of 1.48 MHz, with a working wavelength centered at 1564.4 nm. In the Q-switch operation, a pulse train with a 12.7 kHz repetition rate and a 14.3 µs pulse duration was attained for a 230-mA pump current. Further investigation showed a linear dependence of the repetition rate with the pump power, attaining frequencies between 12.7 and 14.4 kHz.Publication Open Access Frequency modulated continuous wave system for optical fiber intensity sensors with optical amplification(IEEE, 2009) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Frazão, Orlando; Santos, José Luís; Araújo, Francisco Moita; Ferreira, Luis Alberto; Baptista, José Manuel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaWe report on the use of erbium doped fiber (EDF) amplification to enhance a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique for referencing optical intensity sensors located between two Bragg grating structures. The experiment combines the concept of FMCW with the spectrally selective mirror properties of Bragg gratings to interrogate with referencing properties intensity based sensors. The interrogation system without amplification yields a sensor resolution of around 0.078 dB. When the EDF amplifier is introduced into the experimental set up, the sensor sensitivity does not change, but the signal-to-noise ratio is improved, resulting into an enhanced resolution of 0.025 dB. We also obtain a remote sensing operation at a location of 50 km, showing the feasibility of this configuration to be used as a remote sensing application.
